Dark Souls 1: Fuck, I accidentally killed the first undead merchant. I really wish there was a way to sheath your weapon so you don't accidentally kill people. On the bright side I now have a Uchigatana which is pretty sweet I must say.

I'm a KISS C# programmer that works with Unity 3D. I'm not really cut out for making apps so I make games. With apps I have the complete opposite problem of the "ideas guy". I can program but I haven't been able to come up with any ideas for apps. With games all I have to do is make them fun whereas with apps they have to be useful and I don't know what's useful. Even the "games" I've made I would hesitate to call them that in the traditional sense of the word. They're more akin to experiments with interactive elements that may or may not be fun to play. They don't have well developed core gameplay loops or win states. That's how you can tell I'm a programmer and not a designer. Though I am working on it and hopefully I will make an actual game one day.

Dark Souls 1: Wow, I haven't seen faces this bad since Oblivion and that's saying something. I presume I'm gonna be where a helmet so it's not like it matters a whole lot. VBR definitely helped shrink the file size without reducing the quality. The 1 min video shrunk from about 50 mbs to 44 mbs. Even though that's only 6 mbs I'll take it. Any other suggestions? With that said I want my footage to be as compatible as possible so I'm stuck with MP4 for now. Like for instance Youtube doesn't support MKV. Also any suggestions for keybindings? I have start/stop recording set to shift + R .

So since there isn't a general software thread I'd figure I'd start one. Please feel free to recommend, ask for help with or post settings for various pieces of software. Over the past couple of days I've been tinkering with OBS. I am recording to an SSD, the AMD H264 Encoder is my encoder, my target bitrate is set to 5500 and my audio bitrate is set to 64. With these settings I can produce a 1 min video that's about 50 mbs in size. If anyone else has any suggestions for settings that will decrease file size without compromising on quality let me know.

Ecstatic, I just finished my first raw gameplay recording. It was surprisingly good for my first try. The video quality was there but I had my gaming mouse at the highest DPI setting so the video looked like I was on cocaine the whole time. The main problem was the video was 2 mins long and took up 2 gbs. So I need to balance quality and storage space. I have a feeling I'm making my videos higher quality than they need to be. Still I'm so excited for the future.

But there's a line between that and being so obsessive you save over 1250 times. I'm not even joking, I did that once without even thinking about it and those save files ate up a quarter of my HDD space. It was a hell of a mess to clean up too. Knowing from my own experience I can't be trusted with manual and quick save because I will abuse the living fuck out of them if I'm not careful. They also allow you to beat the game via pure attrition which makes the game much less fun. I know a lot of games do that but they should never feel the need to force the player to do that. I blame boss designers instead of the methods you're allowed to use in order to save. Boss fights should be doable without the need to damage the boss, save and repeat ad nauseum. That's designers not taking average human capacity into account. I personally prefer auto saves and check points. They can't be abused like manual and quick saves can.
