Well how could they resist Gelu's androgynous features, Luscious hair and cute eye tattoo? Gelu is sexy. OT: Dark Souls 2 Since my bro Nito's dead(was he ever alive?) I've become a sunbro. Praise the sun!

Dark Souls 2: I didn't know the pyromancers got another job as strippers. Also what is with all the female merchants speaking in this weirdly sexual manner? I swear to god they all seem like they wanted to blow me with no provocation whatsoever. Even the old hag merchant seems like she's trying to feel me up... ewwww.

Dark Souls 2 I just fought and killed Quelaag's lame ass cousin. She killed me only one and the whole fight was Quelaag on easy mode. I'm willing to bet that's her cousin too since spiders and scorpions are both arachnids.

Minimzing/Optimizing Fresh Install of Windows 7
Heliocentrical replied to Heliocentrical's topic in Computer Hardware
Also requires you to look up obscure technical terms like IOMMU that even Intel's ARK database doesn't list, support 2 discrete GPUs that are not in anyway similar and have 16 GBs of RAM. I can see why virtualization hasn't become popular as it seems highly impractical. -

Interesting topic SelfSurprise, I think that we as in humans are compelled to know everything. Pardon me for my religious allegorical readings but Adam's consumption of the apple from the Tree of Knowledge in the Bible seems like a rather fitting description of our maddening pursuit of Knowledge. Adam would rather damn himself and his life than not know everything he possibly could. Anyway that's enough of me reading into things. when we find something that is beyond our comprehension we tend to draw madness from it. We've found a limit in our subconscious mind with which knowledge cannot help us surpass. Not only is knowledge our only means of comprehension it also grants the person who knows small measures of power over the person who doesn't. Whatever that knowledge may be the fact that we know it gives an advantage, an intoxicating one at that. Think back to the fantastical figure that is the Wizard. A Wizard's essence is knowledge and knowledge is power. They may start out as a student who was merely curious about the wonders of magic. But as their knowledge of the art grew so did their hunger for power and this notion will always be implicit. One would not seek out knowledge if they were not hungry for it. In many cases the Wizard is consumed whole by that hunger and deemed incurably mad. That is why I've been exploring the concept I've decided to call Anti-Knowledge. The main principle behind this is that even though we aren't aware of it our minds are just as limited as our bodies. Like I said we simply aren't aware of our own limits and thus seek out every knowable thing within reach. Most people would try to understand everything and thus drive themselves mad in the process. One of Sherlock Holmes's famous quotes is how ones mind is like an attic. A skillful workman will choose very carefully as to what to store up there. Whereas only mad fool would try to store anything and everything within his attic. Obviously I'm paraphrasing but I think you get the point. -
Minimzing/Optimizing Fresh Install of Windows 7

If there's a Virtualization / GPU passthrough for dummies guide let me know. I would love to know how to do that. But I haven't found any simple tutorials for it. I've used Linux before but virtualization looks like it's beyond my scope in terms of skill. Edit: Well I found a guide and honestly Virtualization doesn't seem worth it for the giant pain in the ass it is to get running. I'll stick with my original plan and spare myself the headache. dsDUtzMkxFk -

@SelfSurprise I have some serious contentions with acts such as violence and self-mutliation from an artistic standpoint. They only provide the illusion of experiencing pain by exploiting a defense mechanism within the audience . IMO it's only a hamfisted trick with nothing of substance. That immediate visceral feeling fades almost instantaneously because of it. I have no problem with the acts in of themselves but IMO as far as conveying pain to the audience and having them empathize with said pain those acts are inauthentic and thus completely ineffective. I have the same issue with magicians as well that portray their magic as art but alas I digress. IMO existential dread is far more effective in conveying pain and have the audience empathize with it authentically. One of the many reasons I like games such as Dark Souls, Quake I, Planescape Torment, Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance, Morrowind and Grimdawn is because of their ever dower and somewhat alien atmosphere. Atmosphere is at it's heart subtle and abstract. But if you take notice of it you'll empathize with great atmosphere and most important of all it will stick with you. That to me is what separates an authentic cerebral experience from an inauthentic primal one. I do apologize if that came across as somewhat harsh. Well now you know where I stand from an artistic standpoint. -
ROSS'S GAME DUNGEON: THE LEGEND OF KYRANDIA
Heliocentrical replied to Ross Scott's topic in Ross's Game Dungeon
Well I'll be damned, a point and click adventure game for beginners, that looks simple to use and it was made by Westwood Studios(RIP Westwood). Sounds good to me. I've been meaning to get into point and click adventure games for quite a while. But most of adventure games I've found have been far too slow paced for me and nothing was straightforward. My brain sort of freaks out if it feels like I'm doing nothing in game while an animation plays. Mentally I go "Come on Grandpa, I don't have all day for you to perform an animation of you picking up a newspaper or whatever". The animation may only take 5 seconds to perform but it feels like I'm stuck inside of a loop if I see that same animation repeatedly. It'll drive me up a wall. I find it to be somewhat similar to how Ross can't stand turn based combat. It's also part of the reason I don't like Fallout 1 and 2. To me they seem more akin to point and click adventure games than CRPGs like Planescape Torment in terms of mechanics and design. The infinity engine was really revolutionary in terms of pacing and simplifying overdone systems. -
I haven't gotten to DS3 yet as the series is fairly new to me. I'm currently working my way through DS2. Though since I enjoyed DS1 and am loving DS2 I suspect I might like DS3. Just a suspicion. You should really give them a try. I bet you would love the monsters. Especially Bloodborne if you happen to have a PS4.

Perfect timing SelfSurprise, I was wondering what to do with this. Without a doubt the hardest boss in DS3. His Sweeping attacks will one shot you and his cornflake vomit is almost impossible to dodge.
-
If there's enough interest I might start one. Honestly I don't know how far it would go though and I don't know what else we would talk about outside of tips and builds.
-
No problem, all the tips I offered were bare essentials. So the rest of the game will still remain a mystery for you.

Yep, Dexterity works well with bows especially short bows. The Wanderer is an excellent class for Dexterity. I just suggested Warrior since I didn't I know what you were going with. If this helps I was following this guide https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=353066256 for my Dex build. Also whenever you find an NPC or especially a merchant I would suggest unequipping your current weapon or switching to an empty weapon slot if you plan on talking to them. It's very easy to accidentally to attack friendly NPCs in Dark Souls and you'll aggro them instantly if you attack them with a weapon. If that happens you'll have to kill them and lose whatever service they were offering along with them. Whereas if you unequip or switch to an empty weapon slot you'll be stripped down to bare fists which take a few hits to aggro them as opposed to instantaneously with a weapon. It's much safer that way.
-
I also have some tips to offer you which should help you get a good start. . If you aren't set on a class yet I would suggest going with the Warrior Class as it's very well rounded and makes for a good start. . Be patient, take on your foes one by one if at all possible and you'll do fine in DS1. A lot of times people get impatient and try to outrun a lot of enemies because they kept getting killed by a boss or whatever. . Don't horde Estus Flasks as they refill at bonfires. But I would say only use them when you have less than half of your health remaining. Otherwise it's somewhat of a waste. . Even if you don't like ranged combat get yourself a bow. There's plenty of enemies in DS1 that are simply out of reach and will give you headaches if you don't have some way of dealing with them. . Figure out which weapons you like to use first and then find/make a build which complements those weapons. There's no respecing in DS1 so you'll want to make sure you do it right the first time. . You'll also want to find weapons which scale well with your build's stats. IMO even though this is an important aspect of weapons and should be considered heavily it should also be a second priority to movesets of weapons you like. Initially when I got the Great Scythe I was so excited when I got it I bump it all the way to +15 without even trying it first. Once I did try it I realized I hated the moveset and I was stuck with it for the rest of the game. The best weapon in the game when it came to Dex scaling but I preferred the excellent moveset, speed and range of the Baldur Side Sword even though it was less effective in terms of damage. Scaling goes from grades None-S(worst to best) with each individual stat. Like for instance the Baldur Side Sword(My favorite weapon in DS1 BTW.) I would suggest looking through this DS1 weapon list for for scaling references http://darksouls.wikidot.com/weapons . Also don't reinforce any weapon unless you're absolutely sure you like the moveset the weapon has.

Are you sure it's your PC? DS1's minimum system requirement's are very low end and old. If your PC is more recent than the minimum system requirements then you should have no problem running it. OS: Windows XP , Windows Vista, Windows 7, or newer. Processor: 2.6 GHz Dual-Core. Memory: 1 GB (XP), 2GB (Vista/7) Hard Disk Space: 4 GB. Video Card: 512 MB RAM, ATI Radeon 4850 or higher, NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT or higher. DirectX®: 9.0c. Sound: Direct Sound Compatible. If that's the case then DS1 running poorly on your PC has nothing to do with your PC's specs and upgrading your PC will not help. DS1's PC port has the reputation of being one of the worst PC ports ever made. That is not a exaggeration, it's virtually unplayable by default with the framerate constantly dipping below 30 FPS. For comparison I have an AMD FX-8320 CPU with an R9 280 GPU and 16 GBs of RAM. DS1 FPS were around 10-15 FPS on my PC which can run Witcher 3 at almost constant 60 FPS no problem. I suspect what you actually need is DSfix. As the name implies it fixes all the issues the PC port originally had. Just place all the files in the same folder wherever your DARKSOULS.exe is and you're good to go. If you bought it on Steam the DARKSOULS.exe would be at C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Dark Souls Prepare to Die Edition\DATA . Though If you're unsure right clicking on your DS1 shortcut > open file location will take you straight to wherever your DARKSOULS.exe is.

I remember having that on the PS2 back when I was a kid. While it was so long I remember absolutely despising that game. There were sequences within that game that were so finicky I ragequited on them multiple times. I don't remember which sequence it was but it was controller snappingly frustrating. I almost tore out one my controller's analogs sticks because of that sequence. OT: Dark Souls 2.

Dark Souls 2: How my character is supposed to look like. What my character actually looks like. And half an hours effort for a face I won't see for most of the game.

For my new build I plan on doing a fresh install of Windows 7. But before I do I want to do as much as I can to make it as minimal and optimized as possible since Windows 7 comes with a lot of bloat by default. I've been looking at this software called NTLite. All you need to do is extract all the files from your Windows 7 ISO, Launch NTLite, point NTLite to the directory of the extracted files, choose which files you want to remove and then NTLite will create a new ISO Image for you. 4zCm4c062uI If anyone has any other suggestions I would greatly appreciate it.

Games You've Finished Recently
Heliocentrical replied to Heliocentrical's topic in Gaming in general
Dark Souls 1: Well I did it, I beat the entire game with only mouse and keyboard. I parried continuously Gwyn and proceeded to slice him several new ones with my +15 Great Scythe. Is that considered cheesing? As I mentioned previously I chose to plunge Lordran into an age of darkness. Sacrificing myself in order to keep the fire going would've only delayed the age of darkness, not prevent it. As far as I'm concerned I'd rather be completely fucked than less fucked and more fucked later on. Now onto DS2. -
Dark Souls 1: Almost finished, I need to kill The Four Kings and then it's straight onto Gwyn. I don't think I'm gonna link the fire since it only prolongs the inevitable dark age. Might as well become a Dark lord then and put Lordran out of it's misery.

Discuss Your Philosophy
Heliocentrical replied to Heliocentrical's topic in Serious Topic Discussion
Good point, if you didn't feel pain you wouldn't fear literally anything. Fear is what holds you back and keeps you safe as it's an important survival mechanism. My question assumed that you were an average person which was fully capable of experiencing physical pain. not a person with a genetic disorder incapable of feeling pain. This is about philosophy, not genetic disorders. -
I've been wanting to talk about philosophy for quite sometime. I've posted these ideas in The Discuss Your Opinion thread but it didn't seem appropriate for the questions I was asking. Because of this I've decided to start a philosophy thread. Please feel free to ask about and/or discuss whatever philosophical topics interest you. Philosophical Topic #1: Pain One of the many discussed ideas within philosophy is the notion of pleasure and pain. But I'd like to talk about pain specifically. Pain exists in a physical sense when you say get a cut, bruise or a migraine. But it also exists in a mental sense in the sense of you choosing to acknowledge the pain your body is experiencing or not. So If you choose to utterly dismiss the mental half you'll never experience pain and thus never be touched by pain. You'll be utterly impervious to pain because you chose to not let it touch you. You've chosen to dawn the most impervious of armor or built the most of invulnerable of castles. A mental armor or castle. This also applies to the external pain of say the heartbreak of a bad breakup, the loss of a loved one or friend. But you'll never be mentally pained or obstructed by these things if you choose to dismiss the inherent physical pain that is derived from them. This also doesn't mean you must give up pleasure in return. Just block out all the pain and let in all the pleasure. It's as simple as that. The notion that one must experience pain in order to truly appreciate pleasure is quite frankly an absurd one. You wouldn't stab yourself each time you eat a piece of cake or ice cream. The fact that you stabbed yourself after eating the piece of cake or ice cream doesn't add to the experience it ruins it. So what is the point of experiencing pain if all it does is serve to obstruct us, torment us and causes us to succumb to such terrible illnesses such as depression? We'd be better off without it.
