I've been watching Freeman's mind for years, and I want to give back, somehow. So, I tried my hand at subtitling. I had a bit of trouble with the sounds that aren't words ("Aah!," "Oomph," "Euuh!," "Wooh ah ho!," etc), and I think they fall under hearing-impaired subtitles, so I didn't add them. The way I typed them just doesn't feel right to me. However, I can easily add them, if you so wish, as I have them all typed out. Please tell me what you think, as I've never attempted subtitling before. I keep getting an "The extension .srt is not allowed" error, so here's a link to it on Mediafire. I hope that's allowed.

The follow up line would probably be "Nah, there's too much blood on me. That, and I don't think whatever this suit is made of will be easy to cut, let alone digest."

And, sometimes, with said waffle iron. One problem I've had with Xen is that gravity always pulls you *down.* Even though there shouldn't be any gravity, as Freeman pointed out, if I jumped off of an "island," wouldn't I fall to the bottom of it? As always, great work Ross!

If I remember correctly, Freeman was in Europe right before he moved to New Mexico. I know the Gearbox games are iffy on continuity, but wasn't most of the PS2 manual cannon?
-
Actually, that wouldn't happen. The Nihilanth would never die, so the portal storms never start, so the combine never comes in. Only Xenian species remain on Earth.
-
This was refreshing, although I kind of wish you still do Half Life 2. Not sure if this is indicative of anything. Either way: more Freeman, more fun! Though, he may have a problem selling a US military-grade rocket launcher, especially in Europe and dressed like that.

I think this section of the sentence caused a minor explosion of pleasure in minds of a lot of people . Or was it an implosion caused by anticipation? I should clarify I didn't do all 3 in one day. I've been working nonstop ever since my move pretty much.I mean, I know you promised to finish Half Life by December, but don't you think you're over-exerting yourself?

ROSS'S GAME DUNGEON: THE LAST STAND

Jesus! That's absolutely massive! I mean, I know it's uncompressed AVIs and all, but that's huge. What's the largest amount of raw files you've ever worked with? -
Wait, how is his taste in video production *objectively* terrible?
-
Speaking of the cinematic effect, I tend to get nauseous when watching movies at 60+ FPS and the camera is too smooth. It gives me this weird feeling of "I'm not going to throw up, but I feel dizzyish." The third test no-doubt has that effect. I'd also like to point this out from the Combine Overwiki. The source is from Raising the Bar: That's what I call a dedicated programmer.

ROSS'S GAME DUNGEON: THE LAST STAND

hey kingkolton9, i have vegas 10c, apparently and lagarithm 1.3.27.0 but it also works on vegas 9 without problems this computer is a q6600 from around 2008 i believe still running the same operating system (xp-32) i even replaced the motherboard in 2013 with an identical one to preserve the operating system My computer's less than 1 year old, but it's running 8.1, so that may be it. I really think SCS should do a complete re-write of Vegas. It's more of a tower of duct tape than the Source engine. -

I'll assume assume you're using 10E, because 10A was just bad. Half the time Vegas will open Lagarith AVIs well and half the time it refuses to open them, and I'm sure I installed the newest version, so YMMV. Out of curiosity, how old is your computer? -
ROSS'S GAME DUNGEON: THE LAST STAND

Believe me when I say I don't mean this in a rude way whatsoever, but a lot of what you're saying either isn't applicable or else is wrong and it requires an explanation of two or more things to explain why. To give an analogy, it's like trying to get help with fixing the brake pads on a car and getting advice about anti-freeze to pour in the gas tank. The part about Vegas being iffy with Lagarith is helpful information though, thanks. That means it's on similar footing as Premiere. Most of the first part wasn't meant as an aswer to your first question. Really the only part that was an actual answer was the bit about Vegas. Sorry, I can get distracted sometimes, and it's especially obvious where I jump around sections in the second part. Beyond that, I don't see what's wrong with my answer to the second question? I mean, if YouTube reencodes all non-RGB video to RGB, you're using YUV, and their encoding process is pretty rough, wouldn't you have problems? No need to apologise, either. When I'm being a moron, please tell me. If I could afford it, I'd pay someone to smack me on the back of the head when I'm being stupid. **** If I'm understanding the issues correctly (I think I am), Premiere Pro is having stability problems with compressed AVI files, and when you upload videos to YouTube the colors are slightly off because they change the colorspace during the compression and re-encoding phase of uploading, and the result is a slightly off-color video. Please tell me what/if I got wrong, so I can give you a more comprehensible answer. -
ROSS'S GAME DUNGEON: THE LAST STAND

"oh, game dipped to 59 fps? ROUND DOWN TO 30 THEN!"" I lost it there. NLEs are the definition of your mileage may vary. Some support a vast array of codecs, some support few. Some support open source codecs, some support proprietary, some support both. The only things that are standard are the codecs themselves, and even then that's iffy. I thought YouTube used RGB, not YUV. To start off with part one, I have something that may interest you, Ross. You can have the Source Engine output a bunch of .TIFF files, then compile them using VirtualDub. (I can't give you a link right now; I'm not at home.) There's a larger (total) file size, but no 4GB limit. AFAIK, Sony Vegas can use Lagarith, but support can be iffy at times. Not sure about HUffyUV. What I would do is get one of those new 8 (Or 10) TB HDDs and store the AVI files, demos and TIFFS (Should you choose to use them). I can't imagine the rest of FM taking more than 10TB, and you can still use the SSD, so there's no bottleneck. For part 2: I thought YouTube used RGB, not YUV? I checked their advanced encoding documentation and I cannot find any mention of what they recommend, but I'll assume it's RGB. I mean, your AVIsynth script uses YUV, so that may be the problem. Have you tried finding any addons to Premiere Pro that increase compatibility for compressed AVI files? Sorry I'm not being too much help here. -
I want to hear this! I am very interested. Did you come up with it or did someone else?

What is the difference? combineoverwiki.net is official, while half-life wikia is unofficial. I know of a few cases where the official wiki is worse than the unofficial one. Beyond that, is there any difference?

No, nothing of this has been confirmed. He could pretty well be hiding the whole time or even long gone from the Aperture. I mean, it's very vague to afirm anything. What about all those paintings and that weird sound? The same goes to the Earth thing. The Combine may be ceased from the planet but that doesn't mean they dont exist anymore. We just saw some shots of a clean Earth and that's it, And like some said here, the Xenias creature have already adapted and made into the ecosystem. You were afirming things that were not confirmed, based on some very vague matters and because of that they are just assumptions. Look at these, we can just theorize http://half-life.wikia.com/wiki/Doug_Rattmann http://half-life.wikia.com/wiki/Timeline_of_the_Half-Life_universe There was no power, IIRC, when Doug went into the relaxation vault. I say you he ded. I don't recall any weird sound? That, and the only Rattman scribbilings and dens I remember are from the start of Portal 2. When did I say the combine didn't exist anymore? They certainly aren't on Earth.

The end of Portal 2 makes this pretty clear. Earth's skies are a lush blue, there a white clouds, blue oceans, a bright moon, huge fields for farming (looks to be for post-industrial use, considering its size), Rattman is confirmed dead from a turret wound, and we know Portal 2 takes place well after Half Life 2. Chell was in stasis long enough for the self-sufficient system to be torn to shreds. That is, of course, after a social hierarchy was established and different departments were created. The announcer is partially corrupt, GLaDOS' core corruption was at 80% (There were way more than the few Chell broke in Portal), and large amounts of Ivy have infested the facility. Not only that, but GLaDOS has the two robots now and says she "doesn't need Chell" anymore. Chell was the last subject, otherwise GLaDOS would have grabbed someone else. Seriously, are you trolling me? I find it hard to believe Earth would ever fully recover from the Resonance Cascade and its side effects. At least not in one generation. Thousands of species would have gone extinct due to the introduction of the Xenians, the ocean was lowered by roughly 50 feet, and 70% of the human population is gone. It would take centuries to recover, and even then, the Xenian species' would be permanently ingrained into Earth's ecosystem as a corruption. Headcrabs are proven edible as resistance members and Vortigaunts are seen preparing and eating them in Half-Life 2, and they're also as common as vermin, so they'd likely become a common food source, more common than cows, which are likely extinct or incredibly endangered. As well, with the introduction of Leeches and Icthyosaurs into oceans and lakes, most aquatic life is probably gone, except for maybe that which is far down enough to be in pressures that the Xenians can't survive. There's just no real recovery from something like that. It would be a permanent scar on Earth's history, and it would show because of the constant bleeding. On generation is 20 years. I'm guessing at least a hundred has passed since Half Life 2, but I'd bet on longer. A lot longer. Yeah, I fucked up on the "back to where it was pre-resonance cascade" thing, but as I said before everything was from memory. And my interpretation on that was somewhat shitty. Still, though: From the Earth we saw in space, there seems to be a lot of wastelands cleared up (Or almost none there), the oceans and atmosphere look fine, there's so little pollution that Chell can see stars somewhat clearly from within Aperture and GLaDOS says she saw wildlife, (A deer and birds, iirc). "the ocean was lowered by roughly 50 feet, and 70% of the human population is gone." I'm not doubting you, but I don't recall any of that. I know that there was some stuff cut from Half Life 2 about draining the Earth's resources, but I don't remember a statistic about the people. "It would take centuries to recover, and even then, the Xenian species' would be permanently ingrained into Earth's ecosystem as a corruption." I wouldn't call it a corruption, but it's certainly a rapid change.

"Rattman is long dead. The combine are gone, the resistance is over. Earth won. Earth is back to where it was pre-resonance cascade." HA MATE! You can't possible know that! Nothing of this is confirmed and you're actually triggering my autism! Black Mesa is still there! Well, was. My bad. I wasn't clear in my statement. I meant, Black Mesa and Aperture science were competitors, as seen in Portal 1. The Half Life story line includes the Combine invasion, the Earth becomes enslaved, etc, etc. Under that story, what happened to Aperture Science? Chell kills GLADOS, didn't escape the lab, she's put in suspended animation, and long time afterwards, she's awoken to Portal 2. So, there's no Aperture Science during the Combine Invasion? Is Chell awoken after the Invasion? I found some answers here Doing this all off of memory, so it may be a bit off. That help?

Okay this goes back to the "multiple breakthroughs" line again. I considered that maybe it only detects motion on a certain level, but what level? At the cellular level, who knows fast your cells are moving? Hell I think sneezes are at 100mph. Nerve connections and the brain in general must move pretty damn fast as well. I guess the thing is I don't see how you would cancel one type of momentum, but not the other; additionally I don't see how there would be technology to DISTINGUISH the two or even DETECT the difference in the first place. I really tried to think this one out and I couldn't come up with any scenario where momentum is cancelled AND you come out alive on the other end short of having some positional tracking and computational system way, way beyond anything we could dream about. Let us not forget, Black Mesa still uses giant tape reels on their computers. The funny thing is that Freeman should be one of the few people who could conceivably come close to understanding the portals. To quote TV Tropes: "His doctoral thesis is ludicrously titled 'Observation of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen Entanglement on Supraquantum Structures by Induction Through Nonlinear Transuranic Crystal of Extremely Long Wavelength (ELW) Pulse from Mode-Locked Source Array'. In laymen's terms... looking at teleportation effects on crystals when you fire lasers at them. Which suspiciously sounds like the experiment you are conducting at the start." Of course if you break down that title word for word, it still would not explain how teleportation can stop only forward momentum and not other forms. Maybe the portals are just viscous and slow you down. I mean, they are made with Xen crystals. The portals could be made of crushed crystals suspended in some form of liquid. The liquid and the dust are then suspended by an electromagnet and the crystal particles activated by some sort of infrared laser that's invisible to the naked eye. Doing a quick google search, magnetorheological fluids would be a likely candidate. The wikipedia page even states that these kinds of fluids can used in "dampers and shock absorbers." However, you can walk through the exit portals like they aren't even there, so what the hell? I just thought of something. Xen crystals have negative mass and are only ever seen being transported with heavy-duty machinery. I mean, after all, that's why the giant-ass anti-mass spectrometer was built: To measure their mass. Assuming you could find a dense enough sample of the exotic material, I'd find it plausible. Perhaps, it's the biggest of the breakthroughs needed. IIRC, negative mass violates a few parts of general relativity. Since the exotic crystals are being used, I find it partially believable. I don't think it's a 100% loss of inertia, rather the portal its self is what's slowing you down. Edit: Spelling and grammar.

I can agree with that. Curved space does cause time dilatation. Hell, if you stretch the space out enough, the person would appear to be decelerating extremely fast, but to them it's a gradual slowdown. What if the portals are black holes? Instead of deconstructing and repackaging your matter, one would be spaghettified, and somehow "compressed" back down on the other end. Assuming black holes can be made to be non-deadly, I assume one could also find a way to transfer the momentum in a safe way during that "unspaghettification"

Let us not forget, Black Mesa still uses giant tape reels on their computers. Those are mostly hold outs from the Cold War when Black Mesa was a missile silo (Or was it nuclear generator?). In fact, some tape reels are still used today. Not because of laziness, but because they're more dense than the best hard drive, albeit slower as well. This year Sony developed a tape drive capable of holding 185 Terabytes. Anyway, Ross, for some reason I think you have a degree in Physics. Am I crazy, or are you versed on the subject?

He loses momentum almost instantaneously. The "platforms" don't move between when you teleport and when you arrive. Even if the electrical signals are along a defined path, if he's losing momentum he's losing it all. Technically, Freeman dies ANYWAY because the matter is being reconstructed on the other end. Either Freeman has momentum conserved and lives, or he does not have momentum and dies. I seriously do not think that it's a 50/50 scenario. Scenario 1 explains how he could gradually lose momentum without the platforms moving much. I'm not going to say anything else because i'm not really well versed in this area. Essentially, wouldn't scenario one involve time travel? I mean, the person's matter is being torn to shreds, reconstructed, and then momentum is selectively stopped, all the while sending said person back to when they entered the portal, but in a different location. That, or time in the teleportation chamber is just stopped. Now that I think about it, there was the two week delay with the teleporter in Half Life 2, but that further reinforces the fact that Gordon and Alyx were killed. After all, the teleporter in Kleiner's lab could have been off, and they were reconstructed shortly after power was returned. Either way, this is a pointless argument. To each their own.
