  1. Decompiling it is legally gray but IMHO ethically okay--distributing it the same, considering its abandonware and all. But when you charge money for the distributions (even if they're modified), as he's suggesting, it's gone into an extremely grey area both legally and ethically, unless whoever did it got the okay of whoever actually owns the rights to the game. I'd elaborate a bit more but I have to go pack some more boxes and my brain's not working at full right now.
  2. A lot of crap happened so we have to move to another apartment. I don't like moving. I like the place I'm living now and I thought we would stay here longer so I'm sad about it. The saddest part is that some people say to me "well at least you can keep your memories of the place" but that isn't a given for me considering this stupid stupid brain of mine. And my mood keeps swinging between semi-catatonic stupor and gibbering idiot. I guess I can't deal with stress at all.
  3. I don't understand why whenever something big happens the news will cover it over and over and over until everyone is sick of hearing about it. It's very annoying.
  4. Well considering their studio got shut down and who knows what happened to the computer the source code was on. It's safe to assume the person who was responsible for it simply forgot it when he was moving out. Still I would have expected someone to have a backup copy of it somewhere. Did people not back up so much in those days. I know floppy disks are small but tape drives were available too.
  5. Trying to talk myself out of doing a stupid and irrational thing. It's not going well.
  6. I'm a little surprised that they lost the source code in the first place. Unless they didn't do backups, in which case its not that surprising at all.
  7. If that's supposed to be a plot spoiler, I can't tell. Its just some nondesript pixelly blob. I didnt played the game though so.
  8. At the moment, I wish I was dead. Not much I can really do about that though, and not for lack of trying.
  9. but you're using comcast, so according to what ive been told that seems more like a deal with the devil
  10. This is a joke, right? Right????
  11. This was a horrible, horrible idea. My poor eyes. Also Comic Sans. My greatest nemesis.
  12. I'd love to try the game, but maze-like level design and short-term memory loss tend not to go well together. ("Was I here before? I don't remember it. But there's some dead enemies that I shot so I guess I was here. Damn, I've got a headache now." And this was in a relatively straightforward level!)
  13. Chapter 15 (Xen) is one map, Chapter 16 (Gonarch's Lair) is 4 maps, Chapter 17 (Interloper) is 6 maps and Chapter 18 (Nihi...I can't spell the damn thing) is one map. Interesting thing is that if you look at the map titles for Gonarch's Lair, it's c4a2x while Interloper is c4a1x, that makes me wonder if the chapters had gotten switched around sometime in development. Or maybe I'm overthinking. Xen is pretty puzzly and tricky at points but not really as difficult as i'd been made to expect. This is a good walkthrough though which might've helped. About the MIDI thing: I got a friend who knows MIDI fairly decently so I'll try to throw him your way.
  14. That part with the missing skies reminds me of what happens if there's missing skyboxes in the Source engine: It's beautiful.
  15. That was fun to watch. It was long but it didnt feel that long so i guess thats good. I liked the video.
  16. Ha! Wished that still worked for me. I used to memorize all of my passwords. I switched to LastPass a few months after my accident. I didn't really trust the browser's password manager (though I don't remember my reasoning at the time).
  17. Back when I used it I just kept a single encrypted volume with the files inside. But since I only used it for an extra backup of my passwords outside of LastPass, I decided it'd probably be easier to switch to something more dedicated and moved them all to KeePass.
  18. If you go to the website for TrueCrypt (a tool that lets you encrypt a hard drive and make encrypted volumes), you now get this page: It then tells you how to migrate to BitLocker. This is veryyyyy sudden that it has a lot of people wondering what happened, whether the website got hacked (by someone who got the developer's signatures, as the read-only 7.2 version is properly signed), there was a spat among the developers, they just got tired of it or the NSA demanded a backdoor or something. Something that makes me lean towards the last option is this: "Using TrueCrypt is not secure as" I find that odd wording, as "insecure" is the same as not secure. But then: Using TrueCrypt is Not Secure As Using TrueCrypt is N.S.A. I'm no conspiracy theorist or anything, but I wonder if this might be some sort of warrant canary. Either ways I'm just really speculating here and I likely have no idea what im even talking about. Anyways I don't use TrueCrypt anymore as I dont have any need for it, so thankfully that dont affect me too much anymore. But I found this odd and curious.
  19. I played that mod once. I was excited because there was a chumtoad in it, but then it was just in a cage. I don't remember much else about the mod other than constantly getting lost and going in circles.
  20. Oh man, do they have a programed version of that? There should be a one-shot of Freeman's reaction to it, if so. I bet HLPrincess would enjoy that. IIRC, there's a model of it in the retail version with some animations but there's no entity or anything. If you have Garry's Mod and want to mess around with an actual NPC, you can use this addon, but all it does is sort of flail around and spit acid.
  21. Let's not even go into Mr. Friendly.... If it was in the game, I be a little afraid of Freeman's reaction to it.
  22. Thats ridiculous when that happens and frustrating too.
  23. A few days ago a small child running around at high speed in public slammed right into my leg. It badly hurt my hip which was already hurting from lifting heavy stuff. I don't know who they were or the parents would be hearing from me.
  24. Half-Life takes place in 200-. Half-Life 2 takes place 10-20 years later.
