  1. Of course Americans like to focus on celebreties and their own politics, not giving a single damn about what matters. Maybe, if it happened to them, they wouldn't act so naive. I don't recall saying "Americans" anywhere... I was stating a fact, nothing more or less. The fact that a civil war is a terrible thing doesn't matter to the vast majority of the world at large since almost nobody outside of the country is affected directly. I feel it unfortunate that they are on the verge of civil war, but that is the extent of my caring unless they find a way to involve/affect me in some way. (no matter how insignificant) Apologies. I just thought you ment no one cares at all if a civil war happens in Venezuela, as few, if any of the people I know care about anything but celebrity or local news, and some don't care about any news. I'll update this topic if I hear anything about Venezuela.

  3. "Yeah, some manager somewhere feels like less of a man unless he buys more turret guns." "What the hell?! We install bullet-proof glass on our exit doors?! How retarded are we?! I don't know anymore!"
  4. There seems to be the ever present risk of civil war errupting in Venezuela. So, one must ask, what to do? If a major civil war breaks out, there is no guareentee that the opposition would win such a war, or if the Western world will decide to intervine. So what will happen?
  5. This is just a pipe dream. You cannot predict something as erratic as the flu.
  6. A scenario I see here: North Korea hits Ancorage with a nuclear weapon, so, in response, the US destroys Pyongyang. this is a simple solution to such a problem that should be followed more closely.
  7. North Korea looks ready to start some shit with the US. Yep, its not gonna be pretty.
  8. This is what the wait for Half Life 2:Episode 3 is gonna be like. I just know it.
  9. There that's another scenario. some D-Day asteroids (1km in length) pass by without detection every year.
  10. Accidental nuclear warfare is possible. The scares of 1983 and 1995 prove this. again, there are more doomsday scenarios.
  11. Your opinions have been duly noted. I tend to think that most have gone extinct for whatever reason, and that the few that have created their own "empire" in the universe have not been able to find earth because of distance issues or because of lack of FTL technology, like you have suggested. Another reason might be that other alien civilizations have attacked each other in brutal wars that leave one of them extinct or fighting for survival.
  12. Just keep in mind yhat there are many ways, and one is bound to strike us.
  13. Maybe because of the vast nothingness around us? How can we come in contact, or even notice, intelligent live around us, if it is billions of light years away? I remember our physics teacher once showing us a video of an austrian cabaretist, trying to put the dimensions you have to deal with in astronomy into perspective, by, for instance trying to express distances as stacks of 1000 Schilling bills and so on. When he tried to express the odds of intelligent life in outer space to reach exactely us, he compared it with the scanario of standing in the Sahara dessert, waiting for someone called Franz, who has a sister who ones a store, to come by at 7 pm, purely by chance, to bring you some water. (The odds of this scenario happening are very low, but not zero) Also, I recalled the video below (you may skip to 4:13 for the part relevant to your question): hYf6av21x5c This is not "my" question. it is a theory that I happen to agree with. And you should read about the theory more closely. It adresses the problem.
  14. There are more than just nuclear war as the apocalypse. I just think that one is the most likely.
  15. We won't. If human history has proved anything, it's that we cannot. Any Apocalyptic ideas you would like to share?
  16. Many would like to believe humans are not alone in the universe, that other intelligent life exists. The Fermi paradox adresses one concern: if intelligent life exists (other then humans), then how come humans have not come into contact with them? Several theries exist, but I accept that most alien civillizations have gone extinct due to natural means, other alien species have killed each other, or, simillar to us, they had killed themselves in nuclear war or biological warfare. Opinons are much appreciated. Link to the Fermi paradox: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fermi_paradox
  17. My whole point was that when these threats are at risk of happening, we will not be at the space colonization phase of our species.
  18. This reminds me of the wait for Half Life 2:Episode 3
  19. There's always a way. Refugees/survivors might fight to get in, the disease could have reached the bunker, the asteroid might be too big to protect/prepare against, etc.
  20. Those are the basis for #1 on the list.
  21. I made this post to list off and disscuss risks to the human species. The top five risks (in my opinon) are: 1. Nuclear warfare 2. Disease 3. Asteroid 4. Supervolcano eruption 5. Climate Change If anyone wants to add to the list or talk about these risks, go rigt ahead.
  22. That was it?!!?!? That's all you had to say? Did you read the rest of my post? Anyway, the point was that Iraqis need lots more security than most. That was the point. I honestly don't see how security desighned to keep people safe can cause unrest. It should make Iraqis feel safe, not feel angry and hopeless.

  24. You're taking my side on alot of things. You're right about that somewhat (I say that only because there is no definate estimate on how many nukes they have).
  25. Yes, precisely. I can assure you that if Her Majesty's Government in the UK will try to introduce road blocks and searches, curfews and other stuff to "fight terrorism", they will have a major rebellion on their hands in no time at all. I am also sure the same will happen in the US before the White House can say the word "curfew". So then according to you, riots should break out at every airport. Additionally, the US and UK Don't NEED road blocks and strip searches any more then Black Mesa needs a giant crate smashishing room because the US and UK are 1st world countries that don't have to worry about terrorism on their own countries 24/7. The money for those checkpoints and strip searches in the US and UK (where terrorism is as often as a solar eclipse) is better spent on maintaining security in Iraq. The Iraqis might need it just to keep alive. Your argument with BTGBullseye on civillian deaths are proof of that. Since when has the Coalition specifically told the Iraqis "do this or die"? I think its worth noting you did not answer the question directly.
