What do you like better: male vocalists or female vocalists?
Michael Archer replied to Michael Archer's topic in Free-For-All
Alright, I've decided that female vocalists are just marginally better simply because of Defying Gravity. Technically, I like female vocals better but I like male vocalists a lot--almost as much as female vocals. The difference is negligible. If you were to graph my appreciation of the two, they would look the same--only when you superimposed fifty thousand magnifying glasses would you see that the female vocals bar is slightly higher than the male's. That's not a bad song! I think I remember that one from Guitar Hero. -
Wrong. In capitalism, the government is body with a monopoly on the use of force; citizens delegated their right to self-defense to the government so that they can live more peacefully. The government is bound by a constitution (very important for any government) and its ruling principles are objectivity and justice. When you do those actions you described, you're protected by the government (the police). Let's say you're eating food that rightfully belongs to you and while you're doing that, some guy grabs the plate from right under your nose and takes off; a government recognizes your right to that food and makes sure the thief is punished according to objective rules and how much damage he caused you. That's justice. If that were to happen in Anarchy, you would go to one of these "private defense corporations." Another problem with this is that people might make up shit. They'll say, "Hey, this guy stole my stuff! I don't have any evidence it was him, but I'll pay you $10,000 to chase after him." They might investigate your case, they might not, but one thing's for sure; they will make sure that the guy that stole your food in punished swiftly and brutally. They don't care if their punishment wasn't just; they're a corporation and they made money and they made you happy. If the thief knows you're after him, he'll hire your corporation's competitor; then *bam*: you have gang warfare. Anarchy is the rule of the jungle and the man who has the most force wins.

Quote T-shirts might be profitable, but you need to make sure they're popular enough. I don't think I'd buy a shirt with just a logo (I might change my mind in the future) Quotes I might buy would be: "Submachine guns: can solve up to eight hundred problem a minute" Picture of a CP holding a stun stick in the ready to whack position "Citizen: you're staying here until we figure this out." "If I had a superpower, I would want to be rich." "I'm on your side you fucking idiots! How many more of you do I have to kill before you realize that?!" These are just off the top of my head, but that means they're memorable and that's good. EDIT: I agree: the "don't look at me, you're not worthy" quote is the perfect T-shirt. Also, "Don't follow me, don't follow me, don't follow me" I'd get.

Sorry, zak--too "pop" for my tastes. I think I hear Auto-Tune as well. -
Some people insist you need to destroy the brain; I say it depends on what kind of zombies we're talking about. This kind of zombie is a logical impossiblity: But let's say we're talking Left 4 Dead 2 zombies i.e. they're alive, but they're infected with a heavily mutated rabies virus. In that case, let's talk. First of all, I'm going to have to stay mobile. I can't grow food, so I'll have to move from place to place. I'll pack one suitcase that rolls (like in Zombieland) and walk, or drive cars when I can. Weapons are very important. I'd prioritize mobility, then stopping power--not the other way around. This rules out the AK-47 as my weapon of choice; it's heavy as fuck and I'll definitely feel it if I need to hike for miles. The M16 might be a good choice, however it has a very complicated design and I would probably break it. The M1 Garand is a good choice as it's only slightly heavier than the M16, can be reloaded and fired extremely quickly and has great stopping power. After that, I'd choose the Spencer Rifle, then the Henry rifle. If worst comes to worst: the 1861 Springfield rifle; the musket is relatively light, shoots a round with insane stopping power, and is hard to break. Loading would be an issue though. Some people would say that guns are bad for zombie killing as they're heavy and once you run out of ammo, you're fucked. I disagree; I think it's important to be able to put some distance between yourself and the zombies, for fear of getting infected. If I run out of ammo, I could always fix a bayonet and use it as a club. I would go find my family and friends and try to come up with a plan so we could sustain ourselves. Maybe one of them knows how to grow food. If they're dead, I'd move from grocery store to warehouse to grocery store.

I watched the octo-heavy video. Heavy is a close range class, so a good sniper should be able to take him out in one shot. A bunch of medics running around against a balanced, coordinated team = fail.

You are a clean person, then.

Thanks! I'll definitely give it a read. EDIT: Ooh, spooky! I've always thought that the best creepypastas are about a solitary character and not a group of friends.

I don't eat at my computer and you can help me justify my position: For those of you who regularly eat at your computer: take your keyboard (if it's an individual peripheral), hold it over your head while still keeping it level, look up at it (you should see the bottom). Now turn it over; you should be looking directly at the keys now. Case in point.

Epic song?! Epic...doesn't even...FUCKING...DESCRIBE IT! *ahem* Although I would have to say that my favorite song period is Defying Gravity from the Wicked OBC (and only the Wicked OBC; if you say the Glee cover, hell, even the Idina Menzel pop cover was good (or worse, better), you are objectively WRONG and should be PUNCHED.), Les Miserables certainly has more depth. P.S. "Objective" is a very strong word, especially when it comes to talking about art; I stand by my position. If you want to call me out on it, I will certainly defend it. -

blightmare, you posted that message three minutes after I did; that leads me to believe we were typing our messages at the same time. I love you. -
zakalak, I meant I didn't understand the ending to Candle Cove. I understood the ending to the one I posted. How could it be my favorite if I didn't understand it? I'm not reading the story you posted until you answer this question truthfully: is it a screamer? Does a scary face pop out at you? Screamers are the whores of the horror genre; the lowest type.

I can not fucking decide! In general, I mean. I think the second link is the best recording in the history of mankind. Notice anything? They're all from Broadway musical; the point of the which is to bring out the emotion in the singer's voice--as opposed to making the singer look good (like many pop "stars" today). I think people that think that music is about making the singer visually appealing are really missing the point of the art form. -
And how exactly is that a bad thing?

Although Mike rips on them, apparently the oil sands have a lot of untapped oil. I see a lot of commercials about the Alberta oil sands here in Canada. Of course, this is just speculation. Whatever source, the environmentalists will always bash any form of acquiring oil.

It's time to revive this thread; I haven't read a good one in a long time. I do not find the creepypastas about video games scary. I think they're cheap horror; the horror relies on corrupting your childhood memories. That's why the Rule 34 article on Know Your Meme is cheap horror. Candle Cove is one of my favorites (although I don't really understand the ending). My favorite one by far is: Always gives me chills.

Off topic, but I just established a new law! Archer's Law: As an internet discussion continues, the probability of a My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic reference occurring approaches 1.

What about that kind of "shuffling" music when they're moving in the tunnel--the part before and after they run into a dead end and turn around?

In the past, although I've heard many great female vocalists, I would've said male. Then I saw Wicked (the broadway musical). That changed everything. For a year or so after that, I would've said female. I'm still obsessed with that musical, if you couldn't tell. Then came Les Misérables. Now I say male, but only very tentatively.

Very informative topic title, thanks. New Guy: Hey! What are we discussing? Us: Holy SHIT.

BTGbullseye, definition two. If you eat, that's concern only for yourself--as opposed to giving the food to someone else. Eating is selfish, since you're only sustaining yourself. Same with working for yourself when it doesn't benefit anyone else. Any action that only benefits you and not others is selfish. I hate seeing you post definitions and ignoring them yourself. Textbook Argument from Intimidation/Argumentum Ad hominem. Nothing to see here, moving along. Look me in the eyes and tell me that Western culture is not objectively superior than the Aztec culture or the tribal culture of the Native Americans or the tribal culture of the Nigerians. I'm not asking for your opinion, I'm asking for your eyes. I can't make people look at things objectively.

Sounds good, but let's look at the implications. 1. No problem yet. 2. Assuming you're not initiating force, what's to stop others using force to stop you from stopping you from doing whatever? 3. Assuming you earned your food (you hunted for it, worked for it etc), what's to stop others from forcibly taking it from you? 4. Same as 2. 5. Same as 3. 6. Same as 2. 7. Same as 3. 8. Same as 2. 9. What's to stop others from taking your bed or holding you in slavery? In hindsight, your response would probably be something like "private security corporations"; I would respond "you mean competing gangs." A corporation's goal is to make money; this isn't inherently a bad thing (as I've said many times) but what determines the success of the corporation is how much force they can use. The Mafia called themselves private security corporations, would extort money from stores, and would blow up the store should the store owner default on the payments; how are they any different? In capitalism, the ruling principle is justice and objectivity; in anarchy, it's force. In capitalism, men peacefully compete with dollars; in anarchy, they compete with guns. A society where the only rule of law are competing security corporations means a society where force rules--and in that society: The thief wins over the pickpocket, the robber wins over the pickpocket, and the murderer wins over the robber.

I firmly respect the decision of most people to be immediately turned off the show from just watching the pilot. I've never thought that the argument, "it takes a while to get into it!" holds water. Even if the beginning is horrible and the rest is good, it's still mediocre at best. As Yahtzee said, "You know when you play Guitar Hero, and you're given a fail if you play badly for long enough for the crowd reaction to sink below the red? You don't get to play the rest of the song, and you don't get any points based on how well you might, potentially, have played it. I use the same approach for reviewing...if I'm fed up to the back teeth, out...you go. No buts. No reprieves. No more of it for me." Insulting people that like it for liking it is still uncalled for. That being said, in flanksight, I liked both parts of the pilot. Strange, I was under the impression that being polite was a good thing. I think of her as indifferent and egotistical, not honest. Strange, and I was under the impression that the theme of the letter to the princess in episode 24 was that honesty is a virtue. Thanks for the picture though; you guys know me too well. It can be, but it can also be an extremely strong virtue. I find the latter is true most of the time.

How funny would that be if Ross said yes and this huge box shows up at his door and when he opens it, there's a big poster just of trollface.jpg?

Doesn't this entire thread violate Forum Rules 1 and 2? Unless--is this a joke?
