  5. You must talk about aliens in this thread now. Serious face dictates saying Vulcans are cool. On the contrary, I read that the European Space Agency is working with Russia on a simulation of a Mars mission right now. It's around two years long and includes realistic portrayal of the inside of the trans-Martian module, 6 minute lag for communications, living off of recycled water and air and generally being bored for the 7 months it would take to get to Mars, and last month they did a simulation of their 3 day landing and EVA. The mission simulation will be concluded next April when they "return". One of the main objectives was profiling astronauts if they could really handle the 6-man isolation of living in a trailer without anything but radio and TV for 15 months. Plans are to put a person on Mars for 2035, the main hurdle being development of a material that can withstand interplanetary radiation outside the magnetosphere that protects Earth and the Moon, but is also light and small enough to easily go places quickly.
  6. This is a really smelly old version of a Motorcycle I've been working on since October as my first model to put into the Source engine. If/when I get it working, maybe I'll try out making a weapon for Team Fortress 2.

  8. Machinima relies on being able to provide entertainment at a consistent quality within the restraints of the medium game engine. Oftentimes this can be quite limted, such as with Source Engine itself compared to dedicated modeling and animation programs such as Maya or Softimage. However both of those latter programs are so intensely complicated and demanding that people can and do get jobs using them. Additionally, any content made with them of sufficient quality to be entertaining to the general internet-goer takes so much time and sometimes so much money that it's far more worth it to simply make it a line of work instead of an analogue to a past-time web-comic. Machinima is the layman's Animation software for making short films when they don't have the resources or make it in live-action or actual animation. The most incredible thing about machinimas is when they turn out good or awesome, is the fact that one out-wits or avoids the limitations of game engines (or distracts away from them). However this all technical stuff aside, it's still interpretable as art if it can elicit and emotional response from its audience.

  11. I prefer the combat in Mass Effect to Mass Effect 2, bar the dumb idiots that charge at you to point blank. Sovereign is probably one of my favorite Villains of any video game; one which unabashedly is evil, has no remorse or mercy and is non-human.

  15. There is no official news regarding when Episode 3 will be released, or any data on it apart from the Concept art released last year. Any information apart from that is either conjecture, hypothesis or lies.

  20. One can learn a lot about cinematic technique from his videos, as simple as they are. This is called a Coherency Cut, which easily establishes one action cut over two shots. It makes the action go faster, smoother and with more proficiency than any person usually can accomplish. For example, switching between two guns and maintaining a strong aim without breaking pace. It's an effect that can be often slurred by Camera shake. (I'm whinging at Paul Greengrass and the Bourne movies)

  22. I do not like how so many weapons becoming availible for some classes has added emphasis on those classes, such as Demomen. It makes it difficult in many situations to succeed as Heavy or Engineer, even with the options available to them.

  24. I think of Duke Nukem as the extreme indulgement in the juvenille interests of people who play video games at large. The sooner the game is overwith, the sooner video games at large can explore beyond cheap sex appeal and cliche storylines for wider scope.
  25. 1. Half Life 2 (PC, 2004) Valve's magnum opus of the last decade opened my eyes to Gaming abroad as well as codified my knowledge and pretenses of level design. Additionally, the graphics were mindblowing at the time when I first played it. 2. Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door (Gabecube, 2004) Feel free to laugh, I enjoyed it phenominally for its simple and trope-rich story, creative artistic direction and many wonky and delightfully bizarre conventions. Also, I resent the notion that the turn-based combat detracts the experience; I think it compliments it. 3. Team Fortress 2 (PC, 2007) I have sunk more hours into this game than any other. The gameplay is rich and solid, the universe is beautifully constructed and design unparalleled. 4. Ace Combat Zero (Playstation 2, 2006) The depth of the story and world that is developed is remarkably difficult to take in all at once for a game that could easily be read as "simple justification of a Simu-Arcade Jet fighting game" but it has a lot of weird and fun things to do if you get good at handling your fighter. 5. Sid Meier's Railroads! (PC, 2006) I love trains. I like building railroads. I like building railroads that operate trains that make so much money I can buy out enemy railroads.
