Probably initially did look like a proper sort of crowbar swing, but dispensed with animatonal realism for weapon usage balance, and just said "screw it, you have to be able to hit this fast" and the weapon design preferred that over realistic movement or weight. It's the same with the baseball bat for the Scout in Team Fortress 2. Have you ever tried swinging a bat like he does, or that fast? How about a solid steel monkey wrench ala the Engineer?

I remember hearing about a fan-fic for Harry Potter that has all the chapter titles designed to seem naughty but the story itself is perfectly innocuous and funny but totally not what the titles indicate. Like, "Chapter 17: In which Hermione gets into Draco's pants, and Ron is jealous". In that chapter, they use some kind of potion to disguise themselves; Hermione steals clothing from some students in Slytherin which just so happens to be a set from Draco, and Ron is jealous of her because he ends up with a dress.
