  1. I believe they've already shown that they can create an energy-carrying "beam" of microwaves at a strength that won't harm humans. For safety and signal loss's sake, though, I'd expect them to build the recievers in fairly barren areas, like the Mojave. On the other hand, being dual-use technology, it could be a great weapon. Imagine being able to cook Al-quaeda from orbit as they sit in their caves. Toasty Terrorist.
  2. Let's just skip the animals and move straight to soylent green.
  3. Here, you need this, then . Right now, I'm listening to the soundtrack of the latest Dr. Who series.
  4. I'm still rooting for "shame and disappointment culminating in a rash of suicides."
  5. XKCD Shortpacked! Dumbing of Age Questionable Content Evil, Inc. Erfworld Order of the Stick

  7. Not long ago, I read an article in Popular Science (or Popular Mechanics, I forget which) that posited that we could generate all our current and predicted energy usage by 2040, using just solar power, if we actually cared to do so. The US military is aware of the problems of getting fuel to soldiers in the field, and is working on space-based solar power stations that could "beam" power to troops anywhere at any time, regardless of lighting or weather conditions. They have also already developed a kind of solar panel that is lightweight and fabric-based, and have put it on tents. Even this "primitive" collector can currently generate about 1 Kw per tent. Meanwhile, we're designing ever-better, more efficient, and safer Generation IV nuclear power plants... but just can't build any.
  8. Hi, I'm Rob. I'm 39 (Do I win the "grumpy old man" award?), and from Western Pennsylvania. I stumbled across "Freeman's Mind" about a year ago on Youtube - I think I was actually looking for Portal videos - and have been following it and Ross's other work ever since. I'm a college librarian, which basically makes me Giles with a Master's Degree. "Know everything" is in my job description. Oh, and I'm evil (but honest,) and want to be Dictator of the United States someday.
  9. 1200 Micrograms - Acid for Nothing.
  10. I mainly read science fiction. I'm a big fan of Alternate Histories. Some fantasy, but not much. Authors I have a lot of books by: Isaac Asimov Robert Heinlein Arthur C. Clarke Neil Gaiman Eric Flint Harry Turtledove Larry Niven I also read comic books. Fables, Titanium Rain, Transformers, Powers, Rising Stars, Midnight Nation, What If?, any Elseworlds, and sundry other stuff. Oh, yeah, and I pretty much have every Star Trek book ever written. I'm gonna marry the woman who's impressed by that.
  11. I'm actually at work. I work at a college, it's spring break, but someone still has to be here to answer the phones.
  12. I want to START a 2012 conspiracy. A real one. I want to start a secret organization that tracks and locates everybody who makes an internet site, post, video, or anything else purpoting to say that the 2012 World-ending hoaxes are, in fact, true. This includes anybody who's ever supported the Nibiru hoax and/or "planetary alignments" causing disasters. Then, on 1-1-2013, we round all these people up, and do what needs doing. Bang, zoom, humanity's collective stupidity quotient goes down a fraction of a point.
  13. "I'm awesome. Now STOP MAKING ME PROVE IT!" But it was the line about the green apocalypse that hooked me.
