  1. what do you mean given? Are you asking why we have to choose throughout life? well that's because life is pretty much just a constant stream of choices to make. It's not a why question, it's just a matter of fact really. Life is the choices you do or do not make. Why does choice exist? because options/alternatives also exist. It's hard to have one without the other. And even not choosing is a choice. Like how an inaction is an action. Of course by no means is choice exclusive to humans. I don't think it needs to be any more complicated than that without turning into something unreasonable.
  2. You seem to be assuming that time itself is moving differently for the two people in your experiment. That is incorrect. As the only thing moving differently is the rate of time that their respective clocks measure. example. you have two clocks, you leave one on earth and take the other and travel away from Earth at the speed of light. The Earth clock might read 10 years. While the light traveled clock will only read 1 year. Time didn't slow down for the one traveling, what slowed down is his clock. which is still calibrated for Earth conditions.
  3. Most of the stuff on Machinima isn't worth the time it takes to watch the video's. so for me I'd be better of naming the two or three series that I actually do like. Still Arby and the chief would probably get my vote for worst, they're all incredibly long videos that pretty much don't offer anything.
  4. Thank you. Yeah, it didn't entirely follow the manga. Like depicting the attack by the Shinsen Gumi on the Ikedaya was pretty exclusive to the Ova's. And that may have been one of my favorite parts. Seeing Okita and Saito in action. More blood and a deeper focus on Kenshin's internal struggle with murdering people. Normally I prefer the manga for series I like but in the case of Rurouni Kenshin the Ova's really are the pinnacle of the franchise. Speaking of which, apparently after all this time there's a new Rurouni Kenshin anime in the works. I'm not clear on the details since I don't think it's been revealed what exactly this project will be. It's still worth keeping an eye out though.
  5. You should rename this thread to Favorite Anime and Manga And remove the poll. It would really just make everything so much easier. As it is, I don't want to create a separate manga thread. The reason is that the two often overlap, but not always. And the overwhelming "other" vote in the poll is really self explanatory in regards to it's lack of usefulness. There is little point in naming your favorites or voting on series, the real intent to sharing is to recommend to others. Which a poll and title alone cannot do. for that reason, I'd suggest a cropped image, a short summary of the series and a few recommending lines. I'll try to start off with Anime's then shift more towards manga's that have not been animated. Cowboy Bebop The adventures of a group of space bounty hunters. It's really it's own genre so describing it may be best. Blues & Jazz music, Bounty hunters, Criminal organizations, Space travel within an alternate reality solar system where most of the moons and planets have been colonized. The series is famous and loved by many for a reason. It's funny and comical at times but the core of the series is quite serious. You might laugh and you might cry. This is the complete package as far as animes go. I highly recommend it. I consider it my favorite anime that does not have a manga source. Sword of the Stranger If you stay away from animes because you don't like how over the top and ridiculous most series can get, I would recommend this movie. Apart from the Rurouni Kenshin Trust and betrayal OVA's, this is probably the finest piece of samurai action I can think of. The story involves a boy who's trying to escape pursuit and seeks the protection of a nameless samurai. There's no 30 minute long power ups, Or long mid-fight speeches. It's a solid movie with exceptional sword fighting. Serei no Moribito It's the fantasy story of a spear wielding woman body guard who is hired by a queen to protect her son from the emperor. Most of that sounds pretty normal, the fantasy element is that beyond the physical world, there also exists a spirit world or were people go when they die. The two worlds interact at times and the young prince is wanted dead for carrying the egg of a spirit from the other world within him. Story aside, the fights are quite awesome. Overall I'd say that this is like a tv series version of Miyazaki's movies Ie Nausica of the Valley of the Wind or Princess Mononoke. the stories aren't similar but the style of fantasy is more akin to that than any other I can think of. ----------- Rurouni Kenshin - Trust & Betrayal Forget the tv series, the movie, and the Jinchuu ova's. These 4 ova's featuring the past of Himura Kenshin are literally spectacular. Incredible art, a good soundtrack, and a story that really needs to be seen as any description would fall short. For people that generally hate animes and mangas. This would be the one and only exception I would recommend. As it's more or less like watching a drawn samurai movie. Unlike Sword of the Stranger, Trust & Betrayal is more akin to a work of art than simply an animation. This was my introduction to anime years back and it's still my favorite. I can't recommend it highly enough. Though I also assume that just about everyone that enters this thread will have already seen it. Berserk This is my favorite manga series, period. The depth and level of writing of the story pretty much blows every other series I've ever read out of the water. I can't recommend the anime version as it only contains a few volumes of the story and pretty much omits a large portion of even the volumes it does cover. Berserk is a Dark Fantasy that follows the life and struggles of Guts, a mercenary who's pretty much been raised on the battlefield. Trying to sum up the story within a few sentences is beyond me so I'll just say that it's an epic dark fantasy with an incredibly badass protagonist. It's medieval knights, kingdom warfare, and later on magic and sorcery. Some people also consider it to be one of the darkest manga's out there due to the horror aspects and that it can be quite disturbing at times. that might put some people off, but life isn't sweet and fair and neither is Berserk. If one can get over the art quality of the first 3 volumes, it gets exceptionally better. It's been running for almost 22 years after all. As far as recommending it goes, I can't recall running into even one person who's read Berserk and did not end up loving it. Enjoy ---- Vagabond This is purely a manga series. It is Takehiko Inoue's version of the life of Miyamoto Musashi. Quite possibly the most famous samurai to ever exist. He wrote books on swordsmanship and warfare. The manga features consistently incredible artwork that can at times be realistic and sometimes surreal like water coloring. Everything about this series is top notch. The fighting, the story, art, characters, philosophy, everything about it. If one hasn't read this series, they're missing out. Vinland Saga Vikings. no really, that pretty much sums it up. lol It's a historic manga set during the Dane controlled England of the 11th Century. The art work is very consistent and high in quality. Unlike Vagabond, it doesn't really get surreal. The story focuses on Thorfinn, a boy that through a series of events ends up joining the invasion of England. He's not there to plunder or gain a fortune, he just wants to kill his groups leader in an honorable duel for revenge. I don't think I can do the story justice. It's pretty hardcore vikings so if you've seen Vikings(1958) with Kirk Douglas. This is pretty much like that but 20x more action packed. Enjoy ^_^ Shin Angyo Onshi (Blade of the Phantom Master) This is the only Korean Manhwa I'll mention in detail. It's an epic fantasy set in the kingdom of Jushin. The story revolves around Munsu, an Angyo Onshi or agent of the king that punished corrupt government officials. Fantasy may be misleading when it comes to this series, as it's more oriental fantasy than anything else. It contains ki like magic, summonings, and devils. Interestingly enough it also contains Western pistols and cannons. The manhwa involves a lot of unorthodox strategy which is really quite interesting to read. However, none of this would make for a particularly good series. What really shines in Shin Angyo Onshi is the story and characters. This series is likely to tear your heart and emotions to pieces if you let it. It's also episodic in nature as most of the early volumes are a collection of folk lore inspired stories. The art and series itself starts a bit rough but gets better and better. At times I can't really decide as to what's more incredible, this Manhwa or Miura's Berserk. Well enjoy -there is an anime movie, but I'd avoid that like the plague. Honorable mentions: Noblesse, Magician, Cat Street, Id, Till Death do us Part, Dorohedoro, Unbalance x Unbalance, Black Lagoon, Slam Dunk, Great Teacher Onizuka, Giant Killing, One Outs, Ghost in the Shell, Monster, Anya Kouro, etc I'll stop here.
  6. There already is an episode 33 thread, please don't make multiple threads for the same topic. ^_^ It hasn't been two weeks, it's been about 5 days. I think it went green near the end of the week, so that may be a factor. As on Sunday, Machinima's main channel only uploaded 5 videos. Were as they generally upload around 17 on a weekday. /request lock or merge
  7. Hey, there's a lot of overlap into VALVe fans here. We know how to wait, it's the fact that it's SO CLOSE that makes it hard. I think the problem is that we all know that it's done, and has been done for a while. There's a pretty substantial difference between waiting for something to finish that's in progress, and waiting for something that's already been finished for a while but you aren't able to try it yet.
  8. You guys complain too easily. my favorite series occasionally takes up to 6 months between releases, even though it's in a biweekly(twice a month) magazine. It's rare to even get back to back releases. And it's been like this since 1990. Machinima can't even approach that level of ass hurt.
  9. The way I'm hearing it is that most of the crazy talk wasn't Hungarian until Ross, you say "Get OFF". If it is Hungarian, I'm going to assume that Craig is not a native speaker of the language, and he's pronouncing many of the words without any diacritic accents. Not to mention that in Hungarian, the length of a vowel is quite important. Hence the diacritics. If you're going for subtitles, I'd suggest that Craig not reveal what he was attempting to say. It's better left to the imagination, and since not even Hungarians can understand it. The crazy aspect is essentially a success.
  10. I'm not sure Oil scares really have their roots in green energy. Yes, Green energy likes to jump on the bandwagon but it's a fact that oil is finite. And there's not exactly all that much of it left. The same goes for coal, natural gas, and Earth metals. There's no renewal process for coal, because the world can never go back to the carboniferous state. Even if we ignored deforestation, none of the plant life we currently have would end up being a significant deposit in a few million years anyway. Anyone who thinks we can just use it up and then shift to something else afterwords is going to be in for a rude wake up call. Personally, I'm not as concerned about what we won't be able to do in the future that we're doing now as much as much as I'm concerned for what we won't be able to do that we could have. That is, new technology-wise. (hypothetical) Like hey, we could finally develop a new completely safe energy source but it would require the refinement of this and this resource. Oh darn, we don't have enough left because we've been using it all up over the last hundred years to transport food that can be grown locally from half way across the world to save half a million on production costs. Was it worth it? I suppose it helped a few dozen people with their quality of life for 3 or 4 decades. Surely that's more important.... It doesn't matter whether one takes your idea of the environmentalist route or the use everything up route, the destination is the dark ages either way.
  11. No, but the way the United States started off is not exactly a story of butterflies and unicorns either. I know, I wasn't implying that it was. It's just an unrealistic idea for the states to become separate countries in the future. It's not like there's a big separatist movement going on.
  12. Individual countries? AHAHAH why would they become individual countries? The USSR was actually made up of previously independent countries with different ethnic backgrounds, languages, traditions, etc. It was inevitable that sooner or later they would want their freedom back. The states of America aren't like that at all. And I doubt there's anyone stupid enough in America to actually think that things would be better off for them if the states were separate countries. The moment that happens, America would just be a sitting duck for any country that felt like expanding their borders. I don't think it's going to happen. Countries are interdependent on each other, at least most are. China, America, the European nations, Russia, Australia, etc. If one falls, the others shortly follow. It comes down to economics. They need each other for supply and demand.
  13. The way I could see this war sequence happening is if Mike and Dave are late to a raid they were assigned to. As they're slowly walking to the operation, there's explosions and gunfire and people dieing, while they're just chatting it up. One of the suspects is running away from the scene in their direction and they end up catching the guy. The way I envisioned it is that their conversation is about probability and chance, like say maybe the chance at winning the combine lottery. Dave thinks it could happen but Mike is skeptical. At the end, through sheer coincidence Dave stops at a street corner so that Mike can make a statement about how low the odds are, then the suspect comes running around the corner and just rams right into Dave. Or it could be the other way around, With the suspect crashing into Mike just as he turns around and is making his statement. There are a lot of variations on how they could catch the guy, but since they're late to the raid, it would probably be through something either really stupid, or incredible coincidence. The war sequences could be in the background as they're walking, like say across the river, there's a tank bulldozing through a concrete wall and some rebels shooting at it. Then it explodes from a rocket launcher blast. While Mike is just talking calmly about something semi-related, like health insurance cuts in the department. He could complain about how it's the one perk he really liked about their job, as they're covered for almost anything. Then as he lists some of the things they're covered for, we see instances of each across the river in the battle. Like some guy on fire, an explosion, gunfire, someone getting run over by a vehicle, etc. Mike could have his back turned to all this while Dave is facing the action. And knowing Dave, he'd probably make little sound effects or quietly say things aside like he usually does, "burn" "Krrboom" As each event plays out. Mike would then go into the chance topic. What are the odds of any of those events happening to them? Just an idea. I think it could be done. Though it wouldn't be the hardcore action, people were expecting.
  14. Yeah I heard that too. Plus the last thing he says sounds like "Itt Vagy" I'm pretty sure all the bing bong and Cthulu sentences didn't contain Hungarian. Or at least not any that I could make out. So I'm guessing it's just the last part, starting with, "A biro". Right after Ross says, "Get off!" What I'm hearing after like 20+ attempts through that first sentence is, "A Biro Tarbin Tadas Te Vak" Or "A Biro Taarbin Tadastevak" Problem of course is that those aren't Hungarian words except "A biro" And if my ears are hearing the end of that sentence right "Te vak" Honestly I'm at a loss. I figured maybe he's talking without any of the diacritics that would normally be on the vowels. But nothing comes even close to what that sentence is sounding like. I wouldn't mind if Craig clarified what sentence he was saying. I'm giving up since my ears can't handle any more Ross yelling at really high volumes.
  15. We have the tech, but the government just won't support it. Rocket fuel actually doesn't contain any petroleum products, despite what the environmentalists will lead you to believe. (I have lots of first-hand experience with various types of rocket propellants, including the liquid and solid types used by NASA) The moon has massive amounts of He3, we just have to start mining it "en mase" like was portrayed in the movie "Moon". (without the clone problem though) I thought some rocket fuels included Kerosene. Anyway, wasn't my intention at all. By lack of oil I was referring to it's applications in certain materials like plastics. Which are kind of a requirement, imo, for space travel. I don't think we have the tech to colonize other planets. I certainly haven't heard or read any article or release on it. Specifically I haven't heard anything on how a living organism like say a human being, would survive leaving the safety of the Earth's magnetic field. The cosmic radiation won't kill a person outright, but it makes a long journey pretty much suicide. And this is just for interplanetary spaceflight, not interstellar spaceflight. I think Space being an actual place for humans to go beyond research and curiosity, is still science fiction. Sooner or later a person has to come back, unless a safe environment can be created. Besides, if we can't even find some way to exist long-term on our planet, what chance do we have on another? Or are we going to be like some sci-fi space amoeba and go to a planet, use up everything usable then move on to the next? Also, I think it would be incredibly expensive to mine the moon. It's not like we can just freight train it back.
  16. The thing that turns a lot of people off alternate fuels is that they're expensive. But that's only the case because the technology hasn't received the boatloads of cash in R&D that Oil has gotten. Give it time and some serious effort and alternate fuels could be a viable solution. On the other hand, electric is not a viable solution, as apparently there isn't even enough lithium on the entire planet to replace the current number of running cars in the world, let alone for when India and China really start to take off. Maybe if we didn't use Lithium Ion batteries. The other problem is that oil isn't just important for vehicles, without it, we would have a difficult time creating plastics. Or so I'm told. Not to mention a lot of other materials that we likely take for granted. Realistically, nothing is going to be done. People will wake up in some decades or less and realize that there is no food at the supermarkets, the transport never arrived. And then these cities with millions of people will turn into a chaos the likes of which has never been seen before. Of course, the people that decided to get out early and grow their own food at farms will have to deal with the locust like gangs. And like Ross said, revert to civilization like the Amish but with guns. If we're lucky, people will try to stay civilized, but keeping order in a state like that would be brutally difficult. Especially since getting around would be no picnic. As far as colonizing other planets go, well we don't have the tech, the oil or the time to do that. We use up what we have now, and even if we survive and our descendants get through this, they will have no oil, and no means to get to outer space since we used up so many resources. Oil isn't the only one we will have used up by the end of this century, Helium apparently is also looking at the end of it's time. the largest reserve is apparently at it's last 8 years worth of supply or something like that. Why is this a problem? because it's priceless as a coolant, and needed for super conductors, and in industry. I gotta ask, is driving through a traffic jam for hours everyday, and buying products that have low life expectancies really worth our resource supplies?
  17. Security guard, "I'm ..never gonna make it. ..You'd better go on without me." Freeman, "Can do!"
