Yeah, perhaps ripoff is a bit of a strong word to use. I am just so much of a Duke fan that I tend to get a bit frustrated with all the criticism DNF gets, especially when compared to other games. Seriously, am I the only person on the whole planet who loves the game? Like, I don't think it's just an okay shooter, I think it's a great game worthy of a GOTY award.
Let me adress the issues:
1. Bad graphics: Seriously, when was graphics the focal point of gaming? Just because a game is "ugly" subjectively by some people doesn't make it bad. The slow graphic loading also happens a lot in other games like Fallout 3, Bulletstorm and other Unreal 3 engine games, but that doesn't make them bad games either.
2. Stiff controls: Never noticed stiff controls in the game myself. Simply changing the mouse precision fixed it.
3. Weapon limit: Never was a problem and in my opinion balanced the game more between realism and fantasy. Besides, there are always plenty of weapons lying around to switch with so it's NEVER a real problem. Anyone bitching about this should play the game some more. Besides, the limit has been raised now, at least on the PC version.
4. Regenerating health: So it's okay to have this in Halo but not in DNF? Why? Is it such a huge problem? Once you get used to it, it seems natural.
5. Bad story: Oh yeah, good story is SO necessary for a good game. Seriously, grow up and play some Doom.
6. Bad humor: This is extremely subjective. Whether the game is funny or not depends on the person. I find it hilarious personally just because of how raunchy it is. You just don't see this kind of humor often since Conker's Bad Fur Day maybe.
7. Misoginy: While I admit the game sexualizes and objectifies women, this game is a fantasy. It's not real life. It's an adult game meant for adult people who realizes this is not supposed to be real. In other words, if you complain about it, grow up. Besides, this is totally in style with Duke Nukem. Complaining about Duke Nukem being misogynistic is like complaining about Grand Theft Auto being violent.
8. Bad and boring level design: Mhm. If having each level have its own character is bad level design then I feel bad for today's industry. There are tons of ideas in this game and you can notice new details each time you are playing it.
9. No replay value: I've played the single player campaign 10 times now and I still want to replay the game. Not to mention the search for achievements is fun.
10. Bad multiplayer: Whenever I start a server I have it full in 10 minutes. If that's an indication of bad multiplayer then I have no idea what good is.
Bottom line: Most of the criticism is directed towards the horrid XBox 360 and PS3 ports of the game, leading it towards the game itself. This game was meant for PC obviously, and I will always defend the PC version. Despite all the "flaws" in this game, it's the most fun game I've ever played.
