  3. I see what you mean. Ross put his email address at the bottom of the screen and other things also appear there. Sadly, I don't know how to move the subtitles from the bottom of the screen with the software I have (Subtitle Workshop). It appears that these kinds of things are in the video so maybe Ross should move them away from the bottom when he's creating the videos to accommodate for the subs that will be added. Or if you know how to move the subtitles near the top of the screen for things like that, please let me know! I want to be as accommodating as I can.
  4. The last 3D movie I've seen was Jurassic World. I saw it in IMAX 3D. My takeaway for the 3D in that was: Meh. I don't know if it was the movie (which was a decent monster flick) or what, but it'll probably be the last 3D movie I will ever watch. The biggest problem with 3D movies, for me, is that it causes my eyes to hurt after a while. I think the biggest problem with it is that filmmakers show a close up shot and suddenly cut to a wide shot, then back to a close up for the reaction. For example, you've got someone talking and you've got a waist-up shot of the person. Then something happens off screen and the camera cuts to that thing, say a dinosaur, then cuts back to the person reacting to what they're seeing. In 2D movies, this is fine and expected. In 3D, it does something to my brain. The sudden change in perspective over a single frame forces me to refocus quickly on what's happening and doing that every 3-5 seconds over the course of a 2 hour+ long movie wears me out and makes my eyes hurt and gives me a headache. It's not the filmmakers' fault either; they have to do that to tell the story. Fading from one shot to the next doesn't help either. While it gives more time to refocus, there's a certain point in the fade-through that I can't focus on either shot. For me, 3D movies just aren't worth the increased cost for the very little "Oh, that looks cool--and it's gone" benefit it provides. I will probably never watch another 3D movie because of this. 3D gaming is another matter because it's intended to be shown from a first-person perspective (even in 3rd-person mode) and there's not as many jump cuts (as long as you don't count cinematics, then the problem is the same as 3D movies). That's why I adore Half-Life 2 in 3D. There's no camera cuts. It's all one long fluid first-person shot from the train at the beginning to the destruction of the Citadel at the end. If only we could get rid of that damned loading screen, but that's another can of worms...
  5. I'd wait on the Oculus Rift, to be honest. Right now, the resolution on the DK2 is still a bit too low, creating a screen door effect you can see if you have 20/20 vision. It's not bad and you get used to it after a while, but it would be better with higher resolutions for each eye. Also, since it's a developer kit, there's a lot of weirdness, tweaking, and screaming you need to do to even get it to work. When it does work, however, it's spectacular!
  6. Glad I could help! If there's any input you want to give on how to make the subs better, I'm open. I want to make Ross's videos as accessible as I can within the bounds of my abilities. If you want me to change anything with regards to how the subtitles appear, let me know! Thanks for the post!
  7. Ah! That makes more sense! Thanks!
  8. Thanks! Published ... I had to fix a line where Ross says he's impatient... Ross is one of the most patient people in the world and he said he's patient Oops, okay. Thanks for the fix! I guess "patient" didn't make sense to me because he was saying how he didn't go to the theaters because it's "kind of pricey" and if someone is impatient, they don't want to spend the time watching a movie. But I'm okay with "patient" as well.

  12. So, my new rig is slowly coming together (though I'm having to contend with it freezing up on me for some reason--I think I need better cooling). Subtitles are proceeding apace--they're all typed up and 3/4 of the way timed out. I should be done with the subtitles by tomorrow. As to Oculus Rift. I'm still trying to get that working. As this is a developer unit, I'm having to contend with weirdness. I haven't been able to get Half-Life 2 working yet in it because I think Valve changed their support for it for the upcoming Vive, but I'm working on it. I downloaded Affected, a horror game demo specifically made for the Rift to try it out. I might need a new video card because, while my computer can now certainly handle it (the running of the game), I can't get the necessary 75fps on the Rift. It's all my video card, I know it. Since I'm getting less than 75fps, it's causing juddering and makes it nigh-on unplayable. I'll report back when I can get a new video card. With needing glasses for the Rift, know that at least the DK2 edition provides two different sets of lenses, one for people with glasses (I believe). They're more inset to allow for the space between your eyes and the glasses. I don't wear glasses myself and I don't know if the frames would scratch the lenses or not, so I'm not really the best person to speak on that. I just wanted to throw that information out there. I'm excited for the Vive and the upcoming Hololens. VR and AR. Wave of the future! There's also facilities opening up with physical walls and backpack mounted VR devices where you can actually run around in a world with things you can touch as well as see in the VR world. It's called The Void and I'd love to check it out...one of these days. Now, if only we could get a working holodeck...

  15. I just finished watching the video. Ross, I have the Oculus Rift DK2 and I haven't played with it much yet (I used it on my old computer setup but haven't tried it yet on my new because I'm still trying to get it working). I played Half-Life 2 with the DK2. And my jaw dropped. After the initial problems with the G-Man sequence at the beginning, once I got onto the train and in control of Gordon, it was like I was almost transported into the world of City 17. Almost. I knew I was sitting there on my chair with this contraption on my face. I could hear my cat meowing for attention every once in a while. I could hear my A/C unit in my window. I knew I was still in my room. But, the visuals, when my computer wasn't chugging away, was intense. When Alyx Vance first appeared, it was like she was right there. Following her to Kleiner's lab... it felt like I could reach out and touch her. The biggest problem here are the loading screens. When you're in motion and suddenly your vision stops because of the map load, it feels like someone pulled the rug out from under you. Map loads alone made me seasick and I don't get seasick easily. A dirty remedy for this was, whenever I knew a map load was coming up, I would have to shut my eyes until I was in the next map. And if my computer decides to pause for a half second, look out... I want to try it on my new system... I can't wait!
  16. Just a quick heads up, folks. My computer is currently handicapped as I just recently bought new hardware and it's giving me such trouble to get it all up and running again. Subtitles for this video and any future video are on hold until I can get everything sorted. Hope it won't take too long. Thanks in advance for the patience.

  18. Because there's no actual evidence that homeschooled children outperform on a like-for-like basis public school children. The studies done compared wealthy two-person stable households with average public school students. There are no studies for like-for-like comparisons. Why not keep politics out of the Forum Games section and put them into the Serious Topic Discussion section?

  20. One thing I'd like to mention about titles: Unless there's a reason for it, titles should be short and sweet and a bit mysterious. Titles like "The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds" or "The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill But Came Down a Mountain" are the exceptions to the rule. For example, for Episode 32, you have "Say Hello to Captain Ahab when a Piranha-like Monster is Nearby". I would suggest shrinking the title. Something like "Gordon Freeman: Shark Slayer" or "Call Me Ishmael". Just my opinion, though.
  21. I was playing Half-Life a couple weeks ago. I played it normally most of the time but every now and again, there'd be a scene in which a Freeman's Mind quote would invariably get stuck in my head and I'd start giggling madly. "Well, obviously SOMETHING happened. I woke up in a trash compactor again."
