Help wanted for testing motion blur for future FM episodes
Otto replied to Ross Scott's topic in Freeman's Mind
I used to record initially with the .TGA extension, then do a batch conversion of them all to .JPG in something like IrfanView, and then load up the jpgs in VirtualDub to compile the video. Of course I would set the compression down so much that you couldn't tell it apart from the source, but the file size was decreased dramatically (don't know if that matters if the video is compressed anyway). Is there any reason to use .PNG over any other extension? Does the format really make a difference in the end, apart from using it for storage? -
I just played with a guy at basketball who was partially or entirely blind in one eye. He had great sense of depth with his shots though. I find actual mechanical guns more satisfying than the hive-hand, that's the only real reason I stick with bullets. I tend to use a bit of everything though. But I like big walls of text about possible real-world situations in comparison to games. I thought it was pretty interesting, Seattleite.

Nice to see you back. I missed your insomniac avatar.

Wow, that's pretty badass. Quite a cool style, and I like the necklace. Okay, so it's not just me being weird. It's actually more the neck collar/belt and unavoidable lifted top. Apologies if this seems insensitive to bring up, Alyxx, I just thought it's a thread about user's images. You still haven't answered, Princess.

Oh God someone PLEASE HELP MAKE IT STOP!
-
Hmm, why? I remember once finding a Niki Lauda quote randomly (a very serious Formula 1 racer) who talked about his competitor always drinking and socialising with his coworkers between races. Lauda thought it better not to make a fool of yourself, and instead impose a sense of fear among the men so they would respect you at all times. He also referred to it as not wanting to go "bullshitting with all these assholes." I'm not saying he had the best approach, but I found his Austrian accent and the way he spoke about it quite funny.

May I just point out how kind and awesome you are for doing this? This list still baffles me, it must have taken ages to compile. Some of this collection is also quite rare, but having it all in one place is pretty damn useful. I would reputation-alize if I could.
-
Why would you stop? I quite like it, I think I'll keep listening...
-
Is it just me, or is it every time I see your avatar and read your pink text now, it's like you're speaking in a dirty way? The stare of a thousand worlds... that's good intensity though, you should do more like that.

Can I just say how proud I am of everybody here? Even if you couldn't donate, (I'm in a similar financial situation, so I plan to contribute later) to anyone who posted kind words, technical information or for just spreading the news, it's an absolute pleasure to see it all unfold and incredibly gratifying to be amongst some of the best fans of the machinima world. Furthermore, all the advice and resources you've shared concerning the frame/blurring option are also very valuable to me personally, so thank you to everyone for their useful references and abundance of support to Ross. Hey, that's my favorite, too! I first heard it in the Home Alone movies when I was young, but it's still the most awesome carol ever. Although I definitely prefer the more instrumental ones as well, namely: Bells are freakin' METAL! -Literally seconds after writing that, I discovered the large amount of actual metal covers for the song. Wow, including the one : uC3O_ztCWOM That must be closer to Ross's taste. Yeah, I'd like to know as well. It's amazing how often Notch donates to wildly different people, groups and charities. He's pretty cool. Good to see all you old-timers continuing your support throughout the decade! Oh, THAT'S how you could always record in Half-Life: Source and I couldn't. Good new piece of information. Wow, that's one of the best stories I've ever heard. I can easily believe you would've done that. Well, this is something I've been thinking about for a while. I'll first refer to this thread: Freeman's Mind in Black Mesa. There were concerns that you removed some of your older voice track files of the series to save up space. I've been meaning to say that even if that's true, I still have every ancient audio and video file you've ever sent me since the 4th episode. Of course I wasn't involved in all the later releases, but the vast majority I do have backed up and access to, so I'm more than willing to upload any of them back for you. Even if it's only a handful of people that are going to muck around with them and put their mixes up on YouTube, I know they would be hugely happy to have them. These quotes really need to be more compressed, but the forum format does not allow it.

Yey, yep, I'm definitely willing to help out but I'll need to wait a while before I have time to get SrcDemo 2 installed. My CPU is ranked double your Phenom performance according to the PassMark statistics and I'm quite experienced with Source demos, Demo Smoother and general console commands. I'll post back later when I'm ready, but I may be late. -
"Hmm, why is my right eye so much bigger than my left?" Heheheh, good luck!

Yes, yes indeed, Chumtoads are totally cool. I probably like them because of their vagueness and obscurity. If you want a pet, this is the closest you'll get: It's a custom made Chumtoad toy, for your friends and kids! If only it had an extendable tongue, it would be perfect. Also, this is a one of a kind item I believe. I doubt you could actually buy this anywhere unless you contacted the plush maker.

Ah, now I think we're getting in more interesting territories of the 'nature vs nurture' description. Of course I agree that one should consider the mental and psychological health of a perpetrator before establishing them as simply "evil". I would also agree that there are different "realities" of awareness or states in which a person can act on another. An easy example is one who suffers from types of parasomnia. A woman in the states, or "crazyland", had to lock her husband in the upstairs bedroom every night to stop him from strangling her in his sleep. He wakes up some mornings very apologetically, and with no memory of punching the holes in the wall or cutting himself on the smashed window. This was all filmed, but nobody knows what causes the condition or how to stop it in these cases. Point is, homicide is known to be committed by people who sleepwalk. This has to be taken into account if you are sentencing them. On that topic, I always wondered if killing somebody in a dream is any indicator of your ability (under extreme substance or duress) to kill in real life? Actually I've just started working on a short film project with my sister which explores this question. Don't know which of us will play the killer though. But there are also lesser extreme forms of reality that a killer may inhibit; schizophrenia being the most common association. I argue/discuss these things with my brother all the time, about what 'nature evil' or 'decisive evil' mean. We primarily disagree about the types of punishment that should be allowed or what 'punishing' really means. So naturally, most of the time, we have to bring Free Will into the discussion. Genetic disorders or environmental ones? Is anyone who murders in their right mind? Most extreme psychopaths would say so; that's the behavior they were born with. Should disturbed killers be more excused for having a bad upbringing? Is there an age limit? Do they have any control? Can everyone be rehabilitated? How much of their mind is making the act? How much are they their own victim? I think many of us are capable of evil. Who knows how much of it is genetic or experience, some researchers say it's about half and half. Regardless, I must assume that one has enough command or responsibility over himself for me to justifiably accuse him of being evil (or stupid). Earlier today (coincidentally), I concluded that perhaps using the term "Evil" for even the most deranged, ignorant or unfortunate of perpetrators (ones I may likely consider more 'victims') is still a fair use, either for them or for describing the utilitarian or intrinsically bad acts they commit. And of course for the purposes of argument/sentencing. But like Ross said, this is unless you're talking on a super-meta level. Hmm, I can't quite accept this statement entirely. I think that even abroad, many religious groups can cause more strife and evil than otherwise. I think that parents and the overall family structure, secular or not, is a bigger influence on the likelihood of seeing "more or less evil occur". So I don't think good morality necessarily comes from Christianity, and Christianity in many ways cannot penetrate or control bad morality, or destructive family attitudes. Wow, I usually go mad internalizing these things for too long. I'm surprised my post is this big, my apologies.

Wow, that's incredible. Who is he and what's he singing about?
-
Hahahah! I'd kinda love to see a Kickstarter group do that.
-
Haha, I'm sorry but there's no bigger version than that. The only reason I post another one is so your one and Ross's are side by side. It looks fantastic, and a great match. Though I actually tried being very accurate with your original, and I remember you saying how you wanted the eyes to be like the Syndicate cover character. To be honest, I only really remade it because your avatar is slightly compressed and has the black and white bars on the edges, so I thought I'd clean it up... but from pure scratch. May I ask where the face is from, by the way? Well, at least I'm getting better at smaller pixel art now. I promise not to "magical talent" your next avatar. Now you're a soldier.
-
Well, I sort of have some pictures relating to people, or their avatars, from the forums... as recreated by me: Sorry for derailing, I just wanted to post these somewhere. It must be what the true characters look like.
-
Dashofweak, thank you very much. That's a nice thing to say and I'm glad we come across that way. Muahahahehehehee
-
Same for me. Except perhaps that I'm not attracted to anything. I've always liked your avatar, by the way. I must remember to do that with my eggs one day. (I mean chicken eggs... in a pan) That's very interesting. I always thought men probably got better voice acting roles than women, but mostly I just never really liked how female characters were portrayed in a lot of cartoons and games. Apart from Invader Zim-type hamsters and children, what kind of characters do you most like to voice? Are there any fun things about voicing girls that you don't get to do as guys? I tend to see most cartoon gals with high-pitched voices, like they show throughout this video:

Wow, that would be an awesome resource to have if any jokes got quite technical or advanced. Sometimes it's awesome just to know how remote or limited a joke is when it only circles around specific mathematician or physicist leagues. I thought the same, but then I remembered there's no money involved as a reward, so there's kind of too much time devoted to it. danielsangeo, I quite like your avatar, but then I noticed it's similar at the BMS forums as well! Also, I loved your post: http://forums.blackmesasource.com/showpost.php?p=572491&postcount=66 Sorry, we can resume the topic. Personally I can't actually get any adblocker to work with YouTube without screwing things up, so I've left mine off. I'm getting more and more tempted to block it somehow though because they're getting worse.
-
That is the type of research I expect more subtitle writers to imitate from you, Daniel. Thanks a lot for your effort!

I did the same, but I really meant it as a neutral vote. Work on Game Dungeon if it's easier, and take a break from FM. So women ninjas jumping at people actually is kind of Valentine-ish, if it's a wedding theme. Nope, I never actually thought they were that good, although they were certainly more innocent years ago than they are now. Hmm, I'm surprised at how few sites I even know about that could compete with YouTube. I found this thread interesting: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.838227-Alternatives-to-YouTube "I haven't seen any viable alternatives to Youtube, despite how badly we need one." "There are only a few companies who have the service capabilities to make something that could rival youtube." Man, companies like Google depress me. I almost feel like we're going in reverse with the big hosting leaders of the internet because of how much control they're looking to have and how big they want to be. I don't know, maybe I just don't like their focus on smart phones and apps and the like over their service on PC's. I'm losing hope for my own content if everything keeps up.
-
Oh yes, you might say... stay tuned, indeed. Okay, I'll stop now.
-
Cool, who would that be? Is it of someone you know or someone from another show?
