That one game you love that everyone else hates

Dunno why I didn't make this earlier, like around the time I made the 'ones you hate but everyone else loves 'thread'. Basic premise as that thread. As for me, I enjoy Final Fantasy's 8 and 13. Not as much as the others, but the pros outweigh the cons.

In 8, if you play your cards right (both literally and figuratively) you can break the game in disc 1. The music is also really amazing, Nobuo Uematsu did it again with the soundtrack, and outdoes himself (again) here (and then again in 9...)

As for 13, there's just something about it, that I don't know how to put into words.

Thief (the new one)

Apparently a lot of people are mad/disappointed/upset by this one. I mean yeah it kinda modernized the series and streamlined it doing away with some of the more hardcore features of the original but, like, it has specialized difficulty modifiers, you can easily make the game more hardcore yourself if you wanted. the game is trying to reach a wider audience which I still don't understand how that's a bad thing. (they didn't really sacrifice anything that changed the experience.)

I had a lot of fun with it and enjoy it, despite all the people going on about how it "betrayed" the originals. Felt the same to me. :/

The Bureau: XCOM Declassified.

I really wish they had done more like this, as it's one of the few third person shooters I actually like. Never did understand the hate for it... Yes it has flaws, but that aren't that bad.

Farcry 2.

This had so much more to it than 1 or 3, and why there was so much hate when 3 got so much praise I will never understand.

H.A.W.X.

It may be unrealistic in many ways, but it is an extremely fun game.

Brink.

It was fun, despite having literally no one playing it in the way it's supposed to... Multiplayer.

Command & Conquer 4.

Now don't get me wrong, I don't think it should ever have been billed as a direct sequel to C&C3, but it is a good game on its own. (it should've been a 'spinoff' like Renegade was)

Duke Nukem Forever - Probably one of my favourite games ever. It did everything right for me. The humor, the attitude, the level variety, the minigames, the music, the guns, everything just felt like Duke Nukem. Even the health regen kinda felt in character for him. It's one of the few games I rated 10/10 and that rating I still stand by today. I think the main reason this game got so much hate is that people took it way too seriously and just didn't get it. And that people expected Duke 3D with better graphics, which it kinda isn't to be honest.

The Call of Duty series - Yep. Love them. Everybody hates them. I dunno, for me they are the Pokémon of FPS. You can argue all you want that what each new installment adds is little more than a glorified map pack, but for me, Call of Duty is rock solid and there's nothing like it.

Daikatana - I can kinda see why people can't stand this game. But personally, I think it was just a victim of being too ahead of its time. I mean, nowadays, FPS/RPG hybrids with co-op characters are dime a dozen so to think Daikatana attempted this as early as 1999 is kind of awesome to think about. And the level design and weapon assortment varies between each episode, giving the game a ton of variety compared to contemporaries like Quake 2. I personally love the game and once I got used to how the AI works, I just kinda breezed through it.

Sonic CD. I get why people don't really like it, but I liked it when I played it. I like the US music, another point of contention, and the gameplay is the same as the first one. I guess it's a case of it's the same, now it sucks but with time travel.

Fallout Tactics:

I really don't get why Fallout Tactics got as much flak as it did. It's genuinely the only old Fallout game that I enjoyed playing. The combat is functional and not half-assed like with 1 and 2.

Deus Ex Invisible War:

IMO Deus Ex 1 had worn out it's welcome with it's length and it felt like I was trudging through the whole game. So a more condensed version of Deus Ex was what I was looking for. On top of that it actually felt like an FPS and with no "Tactical" bullshit attached.

+1

Also, the tank driving portion of Mass Effect. (the stuff they removed from 2/3 because some players complained about it)

Watch_Dogs. I swear the only reason people hate it is because Ubisoft "lied" about the graphics back at E3, similarly how people were "lied" to with Dead Island. That and that it was capped at 30FPS. Here's the thing, trailers (especially at E3) are supposed to wow you, to impress you, they don't necessary have to show you what exactly what the game's going to look like. Also, 30FPS is smooth enough, hell, some games should only be at 30FPS. 60FPS is like 1080P, it's really nice to have, great to look at, but it's spoiled the average gamer.

Also, as I mentioned it earlier, I also enjoy Dead Island. Yeah, there are things I don't like about the game, but overall I enjoy it. The biggest complaint I hear is that the trailer lied. How?! It showed us zombies (check), it showed us that we were at a hotel/vacation/Hawaii like place (check). It was in reverse (uncheck). So, sorry you didn't get to play the game from the end, and went to the beginning? Sorry you didn't play as the little girl, or her family?

Oh man, I love Watch_Dogs. XD Everyone hates it so much but I find it super fun. I think it's mainly because I went into it with 0 expectations. I heard and read nothing of it before it was released, and I played and enjoyed a genuinely fun great game.

Watch_Dogs - Love the story, love the gameplay, kickass game if you leave your expectations behind.

Deus Ex: Invisible War - Wouldn't go as far as to say I love it, but I did enjoy it.

Mass Effect - Specifically the MAKO portions. I loved the exploration and found the controls fine. NO idea why people bitch so much about it...

Seriously? Sonic CD is hated? I thought everyone loved it.

While I agree the combat in Fallout 1 and 2 was a bit clunky, it's probably because those games weren't combat centered. They were turn based RPGs first and foremost. Tactics isn't in the same genre really.

Not being combat centered is not an excuse for having terrible combat. if Fallout 1 and 2 were going to half-ass the combat this badly then they shouldn't have it in the first place. In terms of turn based strategy Fallout Tactics fixed the issue of the combat dragging it's feet like it did in 1 & 2 by giving you up to six characters. What's annoying is how simple this solution is. Whoever was in charge of the combat obviously didn't give two shits about whether it was good or not. IMO If you can't get one of your core mechanics right then it shouldn't be there. The combat in Fallout 1 & 2 was such a turn off for me that I don't care as to what I may be missing out on. I also think the setting is boring as hell too but I digress.

When running as a gun-toting dweller from the start gets you killed by the first rat you see because you can't hit the damn thing, there's something wrong with the mechanics of the game.

That's just oldschool RPG mechanics for you, and that's what the Luck stat is for.

To each his own. I guess the fact I grew up with Fallout 1 and 2 allowed me to kinda get used to those games.

Why even include guns in a game when you have to devote 10 levels to just to be able to use them against the lowest level critters?

I will agree with this sentiment that there should be at least some minimal level of competency assumed in any RPG system, regardless of stats.

This problem hit me worst in Morrowind, where it would often take a good couple of minutes just to kill a friggen swamp slug with my sword when you first start out. I mean for goodness sake, a paraplegic toddler would have a better chance at fighting the thing than my character did, which just makes the whole thing feel really silly (and even worse, not fun). I'm not asking for the whole game to become super dumbed down or anything, but the bar shouldn't be that friggen low at the start.

The Deadspace franchise (I'm talking predominantly about the first two games, the third one was deeply flawed and basically a kind of scary equivalent of Ratchet & Clank only with more half-arsed sitcom-esque drama) is one series that I only ever seem to find negative commentary on. People claim the controls are too clumsy or that it over relies on jump scares. Personally I found the tense atmosphere, sense of lurking threat and the moments of sheer stupid panic in both initial titles to be extremely effective, and the design and concept of the flesh-appropriating necromorphs ticked all of my alien body horror boxes. There's something repulsively appealing about a plague that callously reshapes human corpses into numerous specialised aberrantly nightmarish predatory forms, purely to engender more dead body resources to further propagate the contagion - from a casually evolutionary standpoint, why isn't all life on Earth like this? Also, in regards to jump scares, Deadspace utilizes them in surprisingly unpredictable and unrestrained manner. There are few sections of the game you ever feel truly safe.

That's weird because I was always under the impression that Dead Space (at least the first one) was a beloved game/series. Certainly amongst my favorite horror games and I've almost never seen negative commentary on anything but the third.

I think the critics and proper survival horror nerds could see it's greatness, but apart from my friend Dan who lent me the first game most people I've spoken to (IRL and online) have been rather dismissive of it, including some serious sci-fi horror fans I've met.

Dead Space is awesome, no idea what people you've met but me and my friends all agree the games are really cool. Kinda like The Thing in space, which is awesome.
