How is it that the version of HL:S works?

I am playing through HL again, and due to Steampipe breaking the game I am having to use the Gold Source version. I was just wondering how Ross got his version to work? Pirate version maybe?

I know that Ross avoids as many updates as possible from Steam (and anything else, unless it's necessary ;p), because they tend to notoriously break things.

Much like what they did to the Portal decal in the first game, as seen in Freeman's Mind Across The Universe. No flames, just solid colour. There's a command you can enter into Steam that reverts it back, but was it really necessary to change it in the first place??
