So I only noticed this as of episode 44, but why doesn't he just take a helmet from one of the 80+[1] soldiers he killed?

Well, the obvious answer is that their helmet wouldn't match his suit.

But no, i think it'd be too non-canon for him to have one. I mean, Gordon has always been depicted without a helmet.

Plus, watching him complain about anything is pure genius.

Theres something I dont really understand- how on earth was Freeman able to get past the guard in the beginning if he didn't have a helmet?!

Because in the original Half Life story-line, the helmet is used by the people who go to Xen, and bring back samples. Ross made up the stolen helmet thing to be funny. good thing it worked.
