Half-Life 2 - Pre-Orange Box Version

Is there a way to play Half-Life 2 in its entirety using the 2006 version of the Source engine? I have a lot of pet peeves about some of the changes in the bug filled Orange Box/Mac Update version, and I wish there was at least an option to disable them. Would a simple 2006 Source mod using content from the .gcfs work? It's nothing too major, just a matter of preference.
