That is not necessarily true. Copying data is a neutral action and the data itself has no tangible value at all. If you stole a physical copy from a retailer you would only cause the retailer financial harm, since the publisher and (indirectly) developer already got their money's worth for that copy when it was part of a larger shipment bought by the retailer. You can only talk about a lost sale if the person in question would buy a legit copy but instead chose to pirate it and never buy it out of certain principle or protest. Including those who would not spend money on a game even if it was DRM-free and cost $1 in the potential customer list is as idiotic as saying entire mankind is a potential customer and talk about a failure if only 7 million out of 7 billion sales were made.

 

So download a game for free to your heart's content, as long as you buy it later on any ways nobody has a reason to complain about financial damage except suits who live on copyright violations.

 

I should say that I am only writing down how I believe things work. Actual numbers need to be gathered with thorough research. It would be interesting to see how many people pirate instead of buying to protest something (lost sales) versus those who do it because they don't care and would never put a penny towards a proper copy (neutral passer-bys).

Turns out this is how video games are made, and why they cost money, even if they don't make something physical.

 

However it's not very well covered in many national or international laws, since there is no standard as to how much effort equates to how much content. The dispairity is also rather staggering for time vs. income, such as comparing time spent making Minecraft vs. income of Minecreaft against time spent making Haze vs. income of Haze.

This is a nice metric server. No imperial dimensions, please.

I never said data has no value, I said it has no tangible value, unless you like stroking the surface of your hard disk drive's platters.

 

Prices are a problem in the mainstream gaming industry though, and monopolies like EA are not exactly moral compasses. Isn't it just hilariously convenient how games like codblops stay around the full price much longer than what you would expect from lesser known titles? The discounts of mainstream titles are also laughable and stand out during Steam's crazy sales. Crysis 2 was pulled off Steam recently and EA "supposedly" have turned it into an Origin (Their new download service.) exclusive. You know what happened during that transition? EA added some more quid to the already absurd price tag. Right now you can buy a new and sealed retail copy of the game from Amazon for less than half of the price EA want for it. And you know what the bottom line is? You are paying a fuckton of money for a product that has a limited license (Activations, reliance on external server for the product to work.), no quality assurance (Dead Space is a very buggy game yet not a single patch was released.), and likely has malware on it (This malware will never, ever be removed even years after the pirates crack the lock which usually takes no more than hours or days after or before the game's launch.) that is absurdly well integrated into your computer once installed and can in rare circumstances damage it.

 

Money making/profit is of course very important, but you do not need excessive prices and playing with your loyal customers like fish to get your hands over it.

It can probably be reduced a bit by getting rid of all the annoying region locks used by digital distribution services. Other than that I see little reason to pirate music as it is pretty cheap, easily available legally and most of the time DRM free. Guess a lot of people just know no shame and don't think about the hard work that goes into making music (and other forms of digital entertainment.). I am not sure about it but in my mind it seems like a better idea to try and change the pirates' mindsets than trying to put draconian protective measures on your product.
