Shipping, my dear Kirky, originated with the X-Files when what's-his-face and Skully were put in a romantic relationship by fans. Since then, it is largely used in anime and cartoons to put two characters into a romantic relationship, usually taking on a name that involves the word ship, especially in Pokemon ships (Advancedshipping being Ash and May) or combine two characters' names (Sonamy from sonic the hedgehog) or an x seperating the two names (TwilightxTrixie)
