Hey guys, I had a question I wanted to ask around. When's the last time one of you guys rewatched a Season 1 episode. I just watched Ticket Master again today, and for even one of the less notable of Season 1's eps, to me it felt almost like an entirely different show. If you don't want to here another one of Foal's annoying speeches about how he feels like the new seasons aren't as good, don't touch those spoiler tags and keep your opinions of me somewhat in tact

The characters are feel so different watching back on these. Compared to the new seasons, they seem so much less... human. Some of their traits (again Pinkie is a prime example to me) have been so extensively extrapolated from their original states. Sure, she laughed in the face of terror and darkness. Of course she did some silly things. But she still had a serious side, and while it may have been riddled with her characteristic silliness, she still donned a serious mindset when the occasion required it. Now, the silliness is kind of always on and to me it makes her character less relatable and believable than she used to be.

 

Same goes with Fluttershy. Her timidity has been completely blown out of proportion, though it's recovered since Season 3. She was shy and afraid of things deemed to be scary, but her fear was quiet and low-key. She would simply hide from something she found uncomfortable. Now she practically has panick attacks any time something happens (Hurricane Fluttershy vs. Dragonshy as a comparison)

 

Rainbow Dash, even with extremity being her thing, has gone extreme beyond my believability. She always made thigs seem and feel more dramatic than they were with her way of speaking, and I know people who are like that, which is why I enjoyed her character. But now it's like anything she enjoys deserves a fanfair and a midair stunt. Her reaction to the play in Rarity Takes Manhattan, for example. She sees a musical and does a backflip. Yet in Season 1, her lifelong idols commend her and thank her and she's simply left stammering.

 

I honestly don't know if what I'm saying is coherent at all, because it's midnight and I'm rambling like a maniac. But I do know that going back and wathing Season 1, something about it just feels magical and real at the sane time, and it just feels so perfect. But whatevs. I am the minority opinion from how it seems, and I'd love hearing from you guys about your opinions on this. But before you do post a response, I want to suggest that you watch any Season 1 episode of your choosing and compare it to the newer episodes.

Trust me CF, I freaked out like a freak when that happened. And that was before I made a name for myself in the community. And even I was a little shocked when I found out I haven't made anything for nearly a year. Most of it was because I was working on Anthology 3, so anytime I was like yeah! I'm gonna make a PMV! my brain went not until you finish those shorts, mister and it kind of demotivated me. Hopefully Some inspiration and motivation will come soon.

Pinkie still has a serious side. Look how excited she was to learn she had family, and how important it felt to her. And in Friend In Deed, she spent the whole episode trying to convince someone to be her friend, and having extreme difficulty with it.

 

Fluttershy in Bats is NEVER scared throughout the episode, and actually SPEAKS OUT and practically ARGUES with people. No panic attacks there.

 

Dash I feel is straying from her character, but I'd almost call it character development. Her relation with Tank is something we'd never see out of her in season 1, but not because she's losing her character but because she's growing. Same with Daring Do. I do feel she's getting a little to extreme (the games, of course; daring do books, okay; a musical, that's a stretch). I do think she needs to be a little more grounded, like how we saw her at wonderbolts academy. Her energy is put in check.

Bats was a... different episode. I was talking more about Castle-mania. Bats was all about Conservationism. Not so much of it was friendship based as most episodes.

 

With the Apple to the Core, yeah, Pinkie was happy and having them as family meant a lot to her, but I'm talking about the way she does things. Before she was generally silly but passable for a believable character. She had her funny moments, but she didn't constantly make these crazy, wacky remarks on things. She might giggle at the ghosties, but 20 straight seconds of jubilant comments on how scary monsters are? It's just a little too far.

 

What I find incredibly ironic is that Rarity is becoming more and more likeable. She's always been believable, because everybody knows a big-headed diva. But now she's becoming more modest about her work and her generosity shows much more.

 

Like you were saying, it's like they're growing up (Except Pinkie). And I get that they'd make that progression, since it's a series, and not just a one episode at a time cartoon. I just feel likeit takes away that magic that the show used to have.

That is a trope called 'Flanderization' and it happens with basically every TV show ever. Just look at Spongebob. Writers run out of ways to keep characters fresh after a while and resort to exaggerating their most obvious traits.

Wow, I'm impressed with the amount of effort he put into making what was basically an opposite argument. I have no idea what this invalidates or how it does that, but it's funny as hell.

It's a parody argument, basically taking what everyone's said about Seasons 3 and 4 so far and just switching out a few key names/phrases so that theoretically Seasons 1 and 2 came after Seasons 3 and 4, while still saying the exact same thing and making nearly identical points.

So, Snowflake is officially Bulk Biceps, and, like Big Mac, can say more than "Yeah!" (and "nope").

Pinkie as a cheerleader works somehow. (Although I can see how CF can see her annoying with her "P is for ______"). Then there's "P is for Rainbow Dash!". I like how Bulky was flirting with Fluttershy. I like the conflict Rainbow Dash has with this episode. DERPY!!! To be honest, I'm glad Derpy doesn't speak in this episode, due to the issue from last time she spoke. Another possible key found. I don't think it needs to be said, but, yet another great episode and lesson.

Let me just take a minute to say, I really love the pegasi-centric episodes. There's something undeniably badass about seeing them zip around like bosses. The jet engine noises were a nice touch, too.

 

Oh god Bulk Biceps is endless lulz. He's even ahead of Pinkie Pie. I just have to point out though, if Bulk Biceps can fly, why can't Scootaoo? Her wings are literally the same size but she has like 1/5 the body mass. Wat? And is it just me, or is Fluttershy's flying ability extra-nerfed this episode? I get that she's no Wonderbolt or anything, but seriously, I think they're exaggerating it.

 

...Ugh, Spitfire, why do you have a different voice actor every episode? And as for Soarin'...Did he always sound like that? Seems like his voice used to be deeper. IDK, moving on.

 

Nice conflict here. This would be a 'holy shit fml' moment for Rainbow. It's either "be loyal which is my thing, or live my dream." Nasty choice there. These are the old conflicts that made the show great. It makes me think of the classics, like Ticket Master and Sweet and Elite. You don't always have to aim for the bigger plots to make a better episode. I hope to see more like this.

 

Another thing that occurred to me - why isn't Twilight on the team? I figure she's probably no talented flier, but, well, Bulk Biceps can barely get off the friggin' ground. Even Twilight can do that. Maybe she's competing in some magic-centric event or something.

Okay, seriously, let's have a reality check here. Why the fuck is RD not a Wonderbolt yet? She's literally just as good as any of them, if not better, and their captain even acknowledges this. What's it gonna take?

Or is he actually an incredibly fit 80 year old? And wow, Soarin' sure is generous. Considering his teammates lied and basically tried to replace him, he's pretty damn forgiving. Just...come on Soarin', they're really treating you like shit here, man.

 

...And Twilight's wearing a Rainbow Dash wig. I'll never hear the end of this from this one asshole I know who's always saying that RD is better than Twilight. Well, she's still a Princess, so he can fuck a cactus.

Great episode. I really liked the callback to the smaller conflicts of interest, like Ticket Master and Sweet and Elite. We don't have to have an eldrich abomination or the threat of eternal hell to make for a good story. It's these stories that are so basic and yet so entertaining that make the show great. I really hope we see more of these.

 

I also really like how we're seeing more of the world outside Ponyville. The animators have been doing a lot of great scenery porn lately.

 

The conflict is really intriguing. I can see this being an incredibly difficult moment for Rainbow Dash in particular. She's basically choosing between the opportunity of her lifetime and her friends/team. She can either go against her very nature for success, or stick with a losing team without compromising her morals. It says a lot that many people would have gone for the winning team without a second thought.

 

So, apparently the Wonderbolts are dicks. Like, seriously major dicks. They were completely willing to screw over their longtime teammate for the chance to recruit...Uh, a teammate who's basically exactly as good? Er, what's the point of that besides, I don't know, trying to screw him over? Did he sleep with Spitfire's girlfriend or something? This kind of thing makes me wonder if, by the end of the series, RD says 'fuckit' to joining the Wonderbolts and just stays in Ponyville as the weather captain. I mean, it would seem like kind of a sour ending to the series if RD left to join the Wonderbolts and Rarity moved to Canterlot for her dress making business.

 

Rainbow's attempt to fake her injuries was...interesting. Interesting in that it just means she won't get to compete at all. Which, from what I can tell, his no actual benefit. Moving on...

 

Soarin' raised a good point. Rainbow Dash DOES have awesome friends, whereas his are, again, dickbags. Obviously Rainbow Dash made the 'right' choice here, but...Okay seriously, WHY are they trying to screw Soarin out of competing in the first place? I can't get over that.

 

Anyway, this was a really good episode, despite all my ranting. I just happen to take pleasure in pointing out unavoidable plotholes, sue me.
