I was rather disappointed with this episode, especially for being a season opener. No details were fleshed out. The entire thing was two songs, a Star Wars reference, and an adventure to find a crystal heart before a villain with no development and the verbosity of Frankenstein takes over an important place that Equestria had lived without for a couple thousand years.

i didn't like it. The location was interesting, the animation was legendary, but the bad guy one of to most important parts was just your standard one note evil guy with no depth or character.

 

The effect on fanfictions: a lot but not as much as the season finally last season

Episode:

Lots of good gags and character elements, but king Sombra was pretty much just the epitome of a bad OC: no backstory, black and red, weird magic, evil for the sake of being evil, doesn't do anything noteworthy, and no dialogue.

 

And once again Applejack is put in a situation where she pretty much has to lie.

 

Best parts: That Fluttershy is a spy (I was freaking out, it was so unexpected but so natural), flugelhorn, Rarity's fangirling and basket weaving, "I DO work at the library!," the remaining existence of Cadence and Shining Armor but in reversed roles, and Spike finally getting some respect in the form of a glass window. Though he did still get abused as much as normal throughout the episode.

 

Oh, and Whooves, you had to be reminded of Fallout Equestria when she was talking about self-sacrifice.

Here are my thoughts on this two parter:

First of all Pinkie was amazingly funny with the spy outfit, the Fluttershy disguise, the gravity defyingness in the library, and the stilts at the end. As for Applejack lying, they were white lies so that's forgiven. I liked the three songs, even though two of them were already given to us, a no no imo. Now for the villain of this two parter, King Sombra seems to be one of your generic "I'm going to take over X and then... THE WORLD!" villains, and he is. That's not to say the others weren't. IIRC Nightmare Moon was actually shown doing something once, and that's at the end of the first episode, bringing eternal night. N.M. had little to no personality, and little to no character development. Princess Luna on the other hand.... Now I'm not saying the first two parter wasn't exciting, it was. As for Discord, he too had little to no personality and character development. All he did was turn the world into one big mindfuck and turned the mane six against each other. Once again this two parter was exciting. Finally there's the season two finale with Queen Chrysalis, like the others she had little to no development and personality, she on the other hand was the most evil of the four (imo). As for this one, it was exciting, just not as exciting as the other two parters.

 

tl;dr version: I liked King Sombra/this two-parter, although he wasn't as exciting as the others, at the same time he wasn't a whole lot different from the others.

I'd like to take a break from the lollery of the episodes and the poor plot to turn your attentions to the new Littlest Pet Shop. While the animation is pristine and the characters are pretty good (and the voice acting, of course is incredible. Led by Ashleigh, Andrea, and whoever the hell plays Celestia), the writing is too childish for my tastes. Oh well.
