I admit, after I was done fangasming over Derpy and started to think about it, I was a little disappointed. I just thought that depicting Derpy as mentally handicapped and having her ruin an entire building is just sending a bad message, especially for a kids' show. And maybe Rainbow Dash was the wrong choice as her helper, since RD is probably the meanest of the mane 6. Then again, that did just exemplify Derpy's universal niceness.

 

As for the whole "it ruins the mysticism" or whatever, the only thing that it for sure defined is her name (nothing mysterious about that), her voice (pretty much exactly like people portrayed her), and her klutziness (a very common thing). The only Derpy fanon it rules out are some of the depictions of Derpy as average intelligence. However, I do think that this should definitely be the most she ever does in an episode. I hope she goes back to being a background pony for the foreseeable future, maybe have something like this once a season.

 

It's weird talking about Derpy as an actual character.

Bah you guys are whiners. 'Episodes 1-2 suck', 'I like all the ponies except for THIS one and here's why', 'Derpy's depiction as a 'mentally handicapped' pony is offensive and I'm disappointed in Lauren Faust and everyone involved in making her in this episode', 'Rainbow Dash is a lesbian'.

 

Okay I'm pretty sure no one here is serious about that last one but still.

I didn't really notice it until I was reading the TV Tropes Recap page on this episode, but how come no one complains when a pony like Snails is... well, rather slow but when it's Derpy suddenly she's "mentally handicapped"?

Because 1) Snips and Snails are fleshed out enough as characters that you know 2) Derpy is crosseyed, so has a physical aspect as well as a mental aspect 3) Derpy doesn't even show awareness of her failures like the others do 4) Snails speech isn't as severe 5) people have made Derpy mentally handicapped, and we can't know for sure if that's how they made her as well.

I'm still not really sold on "mentally handicapped" as we've only had 1 proper scene. Stupid maybe but not "mentally handicapped".

If she isn't mentally handicapped then she must be cursed, being so clumsy and incompetent at everything we've seen her doing. In fact, it's not even the only scene where she's been shown that way. Virtually every time we've seen her she's been screwing up somehow. Remember when Twilight was investigating the Pinkie Sense? Well, who else but Derpy dropped half a ton of merchandise on her head? Add that to the general obliviousness, happy-go-lucky behavior, and 'retard voice' and, well, I just can't help but to think she's the complete stereotype of a mentally retarded person. If nothing else, a good portion of the audience sees her that way. Honestly I always imagined her as Ditzy Doo, clumsy, kind and cross eyed but as intelligent as anyone else. It's not even offensive to me really, more like it ruined her as a character and made a perfect world not-so-perfect.

I think Derpy might be concussed. It seems that she is extremely accident prone and I think it may have taken a toll on her well being.

Still love her. <3 Honestly, the more I watch the Derpy scene the more I just CANNOT stop smiling. I don't know what it is about this show, it's not like the jokes are hilarious, on any other show I probably wouldn't even notice them, but in MLP EVERYTHING makes me smile and laugh. Goddamn I love this show.

What he said. I actually had trouble falling asleep that night because my mind kept wandering back to it and everytime I thought of it I smiled. That Derpy is so damn adorable.

Perfect world? There are dragons, some kind of 3 headed swamp monsters, huge bearlike ghosts thingies, trixie, gilda, those little brats that keep bothering the CMC ect. The world was never perfect, it would be boring if it was. And even though the mane six are pretty developed many other background characters are still only plain stereotypes, why is derpy an exception?
