The only thing I don't get is, wasn't Derpy ALWAYS canon? Like ever since they acknowledged the whole thing and started giving her cameos in episodes? I mean they never officially gave her a speaking role before but she's always been in the show, she's always been Derpy.

She had always existed, yes, and her cameos did make her a special background character, but she has now been verified as the Derpy we know and love. Also, its a matter of how much of her was canon. We now know for a fact what she sounds like, what her name is (Derpy, not Ditzy), we have a general but much better idea of her mental faculties (riding the line of klutzy ditz and mentally handicapped), and general stuff like her mannerisms and attitude. Also she was given a much bigger role in the plot (relatively speaking).

 

To be honest, I'm still buzzed from the whole thing. When I think of the scene, it still seems to awesome to be true, and I keep having to remind myself that I did not watch it in some fan animation.

Just watched the episode, and FINALLY, A mane six episode. This is the first MLP ep I've laughed out loud at in a long time, perhaps due to the increasing amount of CMC episodes in season 2 which are just boring.

Derpy is just a massive troll. She spends the whole day screwing up Ponyville and when she gets home and her eyes realign and she laughs.

Ugh, Derpy being canon is nice and all, but I really don't like how she was portrayed. Sure she had the derp eyes, but that didn't mean she was mentally disabled, just that she had an amusing appearance. But this episode pretty strongly implied that she does have mental disabilities. All the stereotypes are there, even the 'retard voice' (God I hate that word). My problem with this is that in a show like MLP, that essentially depicts a peaceful, perfect utopia, that means that stuff like this still happens. Honestly? That kind of ruined her for me. She was better as a background character for us to speculate about. And what are the implications? Why is there only one pony like her? Where are the others? Are pony genetics so perfect that no physical or mental disabilities ever happen, except for one tragic exception? Or maybe something worse, like parents hiding their defective children from the world? What kind of life has she lived when she is the only pony in the world that isn't perfect? Honestly, I liked this show better when I could pretend it was a perfect world. If you'll excuse me, I'll be retreating to the flame-shielded hate bunker.

 

If this is really bleak, then forgive me. I just finished reading something dark as hell, and that kind of put me in a bleak mood.

It is possible, likely even, that Derpy is simply inept, oblivious and dim, rather than mentally retarded.

Didn't really change Derpy for me. I never had a set personality for her because all the fan fics and pics I've seen conflict her personality. I've always seen her as basically how the show showed her, minus her voice. Ever since she apparently said 'Muffins!' I've always gone with that voice regardless of who really spoke.
