Great episode as usual. I'm still holding out hope that Freeman will eventually find someone he can have a pleasant interaction with... ?

kleiner wasn't pleasant?

Rewatch the Strife RGD if you want to see how it would look using a gamepad, I use it in one portion of that.

While I despise the very concept of using a gamepad for playing FPS, it's only because of AIMING. People here talk specifically about gamepad MOVEMENT.

In the very episode you've just mentioned, you said that analog input would be better for movement, and I vehemently concur. So I'm with Isaiah here - "mouse + gamepad/joystick" combo might be the best currently available option for controlling the player character in an FPS game.

The only middle ground I can think of is the steam controller. But that wouldn't really work well for FM.

If anyone wants to send a keypad with analogue keys, I'll be happy to use it in FM.  I heard about it on a kickstarter mentioned in the Strife video, then I think it got scrapped for full keyboards, which I doubt would be as nice for typing.

Also feel free to post a video of someone using a gamepad to move with one hand and a mouse to aim with the other, it doesn't sound particularly ergonomic to me.

The only thing I could think of that does something like that are some of those keyboards with optical switches. But I don't know how many there are that use it for simulating analog movement.

Nah, I was just theorizing. Frankly I couldn't care less about FM, let alone how fluid the camera motion is in it.

Maybe, but it might just be about the steepness of the learning curve.

It's more of a tank situation, where you have one man being the driver, one man being the gunman and a third being the commander and deciding what to do. Very few people can drive a tank and aim the turret anywhere other than dead ahead at the same time.

And yet people do it on the regular in games like War Thunder... And quite well I might add.

Don't insult me. I have trained professionals to do that.

I doubt it, I think you misunderstood me (unless warthunder has a split view for driver and gunner)

There are also some tanks IRL that can be operated by a single person.

I WOULD FIND IT VERY CHALLENGING, TO DRIVE A TANK AND LOAD A SHELL, IN REAL LIFE

ah SUKA I DROPPED ME RUSSIAN SHELL ON FLOOR

?????????

That's what autoloaders are for. ;)

Also the Steam Controller sadly got discontinued by Valve, so the only choice Ross would have to get one is buying a used one or something.

If he wants to buy mine, he can't. (I haven't found it yet since I moved, after I do he could)

Only analog keyboard I've seen is the Adomax Flaretech B, I saw it in a youtube video some time ago. Apparently it actually specifically worked well in Source games, since the analog key presses are treated just like a controller's joystick (X Input to be exact). All of that said, I think you should just stick to regular digital movement, it's what Freeman's mind has been using since the beginning and would be kind of awkward albeit cool to see just suddenly changed,

from the tankette article: "Some models were not equipped with turrets (and together with the tracked mobility, this is often seen as defining the concept), or just a very simple turret that was traversed by hand or leg."

So no split screen required.

It's very cool, but not relevant to the one driver split attention required when you have an independently targetable

turret weapon without an AI, so you can steer in one direction and shoot in another (while doing trajectory calculations in your head/vehicle computer).

BTW, does War Thunder have auto lock on like so many console games have today? (because that would explain how people can drive and aim in different directions at the same time).

No. I have no issues with moving aim either when using a tank that has a stabilizer for the gun. (which isn't common until Rank VI)

If it's just a matter of getting smoother camera for the video, isn't there a way to do that in the demo recorder? Or is Ross not using that anymore and just recording straight off a capture?
