I think it's the same as it's always been... Except now they have a chance at ousting Gaddafi.

Don't insult me. I have trained professionals to do that.

I don't see how anything is going to change at all.... maybe in 30 years the countries are going to be in a better situation economically and rights and freedom wise, but I don't think they are going to be a great power in the near future....

It makes me mad that Obama is so eager to go after Ghaddfi and Libya, but he is appeasing the real terrorist-holding nations like Iran.

Granted, we are morally in the right to go into Libya; an Islamic dictatorship has no right to exist. But we have no self-interest in going into Libya. Out of all Islamic dictators, Ghaddfi poses the least amount of threat to us. If we're going to send our boys to die, we should have a good reason for doing so. For example, in Iraq, our self-interest was oil.

But seriously, we have no business in Libya. Let's pull out and bomb Iran.

Huh. I did not know that.

Still, I think killing terrorists is more in our self-interest. So I say once we're done wiping terrorist sponsoring nations off the face of the earth, if we have any spare bombs left and we need oil, we'll go into Libya.

Bombs are the keyword here. It is immoral to put our boys in danger when we can just carpet bomb something.

You guys are assholes. " THAT COUNTRY HAS A SMALL TERRORIST FACTION IT IT! KILL EVERYONE IN THAT COUNTRY". Or " running low on oil, MURDERING TIME!", no wonder so many people hate America.

I don't even know why Michael here says "We", I am Ukrainian for that matter.

He's saying "we" as in USA residents.

I think Axeldeath makes a valid point... It is extremely unfortunate that the world sees only that terrible side of what we do. The people that don't like us will point to the worst that we do and the worst people we have, and say that that is the normal in our country. (the people that never liked us are numerous and powerful enough to sway almost the entire rest of the world's opinion against us)

Don't insult me. I have trained professionals to do that.

Just so you all know, The United Nations was not eager to do anything about Libya because Libya can't threaten World Security. The UN Security Council's job is preventing World War III. If displacing evil dictators was their job, North Korea would not be North Korea right now.

This is a nice metric server. No imperial dimensions, please.

Libya HAS, in fact, employed terrorists. The guy who blew up that US airliner over Locherbie, Scotland was Libyan. That's why he went back there to a heroes' welcome when he was released. (Thanks, UK!) On February 24, 2011, Libya's former justice minister Mustafa Abdul Jalil claimed that Muammar Gaddafi had personally ordered the Lockerbie bombing.

It was a Lybian terrorist who blew up a Berlin nightclub and killed 230 people.

Abu Nidal (google him, children) was sheltered and employed by Libya.

Also, Libya accepted responsibility for the hijackinjg and deaths aboard UTA Flight 772.

It is extremely unfortunate that the world sees only that terrible side of what we do.

I say rather that the great stuff we do (Asian Tsunami relief, Haiti Relief, pretty damn well near everywhere relief) has a tendency to get ignored.

We're like that smart kid who gets all the hate for messing up the curve and is picked last for gym... until he starts doing the jocks' homework, and then he's their best friend... for as long as they need him, then he goes back to being a pariah.

There's a lot of jealousy and butthurt from the has-been and never-will-be nations, as well. Aww. someone wost their widdle empiwes!

Yes, we project our power. Because we CAN, and if you could, you would too. Imagining anything else is lying to yourself.

(Sorry if that was a little flamey. There are just a few things that push my annoyed button.)

He just kept talking and talking in one long incredibly unbroken sentence moving from topic to topic so that no one had a chance to interrupt it was really quite hypnotic...

Get the hell of your high horse and stop pretending it's America that's in the right all the time, " I say rather that the great stuff we do (Asian Tsunami relief, Haiti Relief, pretty damn well near everywhere relief) has a tendency to get ignored". You think your the only ones who provide relief? Maybe your "ignored" because a helluva lotta other countries do it too, I don't personally hate America at all, but I sure can see how America is seen as the big bully nation of the world from the eyes of others

I don't think he meant that smart kid thing serious but as an exaggeration. That would be stupid if anyone thinks that their country is right all the time

Get off your troll horse and stop pretending that that's what I said.

Yeah, let's look at that. Just for fun, I checked out the Wiki page for the Humanitarian response to the Asian Tsunami.

When the Asian Tsunami hit, The US sent 2 AIRCRAFT CARRIERS full of aid and equipment and food and rescue planes, medical ships, and at last count some $2.825 BILLION in donations, governmental and private.

I'll give props to the UK for sending about 1/4 of that, ships, helicopters, planes, etc.

New Zealand sent $60.3 million and 2 clunky planes. To put it in perspective, the US's Mormons and Mennonites alone donated about that much.

Still, impressive for an itty-bitty country with less global influence than Canada.

I don't personally hate America at all,

I'm tempted to call shenanigans on this part. I think this is like saying "some of my best friends are black!!" But I won't.

but I sure can see how America is seen as the big bully nation of the world from the eyes of others

Dumb, hypocritical others, sure. Because you can bet that if you actually look at them, nearly all those "others" are currently or have recently done far worse things than America. Ask the Maori if you don't believe me.

America exerts its power because it CAN. That is what power is FOR. And believing that ANY other nation would not exercise any power that it has in it's own interests is not only colossally ignorant of history, it is positively delusional.

I get the feeling this situation is going to reach the point where Gaddafi gets captured and/or killed and we got a second case of Iraq on our hands. They already killed one of G's sons, iirc.
