Those things are the Endermen, and they're pretty interesting. However they are apparently getting nerfed in 1.9 with regards to what they can pick up, as they became somewhat annoying...

I am not that interested in Minecraft SP anymore. I will probably start playing it once it is "released" rather than get excited over every update that usually only adds tiny things.

They're not getting rid of Endermen in 1.9, they're adding use to those Ender pearls, most likely teleporting.

It's awesome how many minor things have been changed/fixed. For example when your tool breaks when mining its final block, you now get whatever the block was, rather than it being destroyed along with the tool.

Not to mention significantly larger things, such as... I dunno... a final boss and proper ending, perhaps?

I'd have to agree that Notch is a bit whiny asshole (pardon my language), but he has been a jerk to Yogscast (not sure if anyone know who they are here, long story short, they make game vids and a youtube minecraft show) lieing about them and to make it worse Mojang sold the rights to live stream THEIR SHOW to IGN without asking them or even telling them, so yeah... assholes.
