Mass Effect: Thread

The way I interpet it was that the race that eventually winded up as proto-reaper toothpaste were already embroiled in some sort of galactic machine war Terminator style or on the edge of it. They built The Catalyst for the purpose of stopping this and preventing it ever happeneing again, ever. But it was insane with its logic boiling down to, organics make machines, machines kill organics, therefore, kill all organics and they won't be killed by machines. Even better, he didn't have to kill them, he could melt them into to toothpaste and the make a spaceship, and they'd live forever. The part where this breaks down is with Sovereign and ME1. Sovereign really made it clear he hated organic life, he wanted them all dead. Maybe just the individual Reaper personality? and also, why the hell construct a giant galactic trap with the citadel and mass relays? My best idea is that it makes it so any society that will create killer robots can be easily monitored if they create a galactic civilization gated by pathways you control instead of on their own. That way they never evolve to a level you can't stop and you known when to move in and melt them down.

Really the only reason why I didn't pick Synthesis was because I didn't want to die, but I didn't want to destroy all synthetics either, so Control was a nice compromise.

Love everything having to do with ME, I wasn't even bothered with the whole ending thing for ME3. For me they didn't even have to release the new ending patch.

On the other hand, if anyone here has it for 360, we can play. Very7684's the gamertag (the v may or may not be capitalized)

The earliest memory I have of my time with Feros was waaayyy back in late 2009 when I first got the game. I was driving along the bridge, shooting Geth, everything going normal, and there's this one area, I believe right outside the underground way leading to the ExoGeni employees, where there's this rubble that is a tunnel big enough for the Mako to slip through. Because it looked big enough (and in fact, was, after attempting it again multiple playthroughs later) I decided to drive through it.

The Mako got stuck.

After about 10 minutes of trying to pull it out (including throwing grenades to blast it out) I finally gave up and decided to make it to the ExoGeni base on foot. So, there I was, me and my party, making a mad dash across the bridge, running I don't know how many miles to reach that base. And I actually made it through Feros just running to and from that base. The funny thing was, when you get back to that undergroudn entrance, there's a cutscene where the Mako drives up to drop off the girl you bring with you. Somehow, that summoned my car and I got it back. I had to get out anyway to follow her but at least I was able to use it for the rest of the mission.

Bought Mass Effect 1 and 2 in the Steam Sale.

Got perfect ending in MAss Effect 2.

Strengths of Mass Effect:

Extremely well crafted universe.

The Paragon/Renegade is something I hold up as a true morality system. It's not simply good or evil, more Compassionate Helper Hero or Pragmatic if Racist Anti-Hero.

The plot is very engaging.

Virmire

Lots of other stuff

Weaknesses:

The shooting is just bad.

Loot system is needless, tedious and hopelessly dated.

Same goes for the "Pick your permanent class before you even know what they ARE" system

A little too talky in places, but necessarily so to establish said universe.

Neutral choices are worthless unless you're going all Paragon/Renegade (I'm Paragade).

Upgrade system has a lot of choices, but there's very little noticeable impact with upgrades.

Strengths of Mass Effect 2:

Dynamic Endings

TIM

Loyalty missions give great character development and help you connect much closer to the characters.

Shooting is much, much better. Now you aren't essentially limited to only ever using one type of gun.

The refined HUB system keeps the tangible size of the world while also avoiding having the programmers actually make decent vehicle physics.

Planet scanning can potentially add to immersion with the right mindset.

Upgrades have much more impact, but the small AMOUNT of potential upgrades mean you don't have much room for alternate class builds. Reduces the game from Action RPG to Action Game with notable RPG elements.

Thane's Voice.

Other stuff

Weaknesses:

Planet scanning is fucking awful if you can't put yourself in a good mindset.

While the plot itself was fun what with the "Build a team of misfits together to perform a suicide mission (And prove them wrong)", it didn't feel like it did much for the overall arc aside from add some cool characters and bridge between ME1's "We have to prevent the Reaper invasion's normal method" and ME3's (Assumed as I will not pay $60 for a fucking digital game) "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!"

Game felt a little too easy and afraid to throw meaty hordes at you.

Jacob is boring

While I do not mind the "Do some cover based shooting relevant to plot then more plot and dialogue choices" system, the lack of any real gameplay aside from the cover-based shooting made the game feel a little token.

From what I can tell, most of the DLC is stuff that was supposed to be in the main game but was cut. Whether solely to make it DLC or for legitimate time concerns, I'd prefer to not know.

My FemShep also harbors guilt over

Having the Alliance fleet focus on Sovereign and abandoning the Council to die. It was a bad situation and Sovereign was too much of a threat to divert fire power away from it. In a situation like that, from a realistic perspective you couldn't be sure having half the fleet focus on geth instead would have left enough man power to kill Soveriegn. Shepard decided to put the galaxy itself first, but now the galaxy resents her as it is apparent she could have had her cake and eaten it as well.

:(

Will do opinions on Mass Effect 3 when EA pulls their head out of its ass and realizes the point of Digital Distribution is that you can sell more games for cheaper prices than physical retail and make more profit.

I love you, yet can't stand to know you exist.

Good luck getting EA to get their heads out of their asses. They're so far up in there they run a high risk of disappearing in themselves.

Also is Mass Effect 1 good? I'm thinking of picking it up if it goes on sale again.

Considering that I've been through about 9 times or so, yeah I'd say so. (I still want this setting to become the new star wars even if Bioware has gone down the tube)

6 and 9 times through... I think my last one was #12 or #13... (I'm counting the number of times I've gone through every section, even if it was just reloading a save to go through better than before)

Don't insult me. I have trained professionals to do that.

a bit of self-promotion but also due to recent interest i'm bringing this thread back. kind of nuts to believe it started before ME3 was even released. if anyone's interested in wild, completely baseless speculation about the next mass effect i'd like to see some thoughts on what it might be/what gameplay systems it may include and change

Mass Effect always has the best porn. Hopefully the good people of Gary's Mod won't rest on their laurels.
