The Duke Nukem Forever thread

Recommended Posts

I'm probably going to write a favorable review when I'm done playing it.

Yesterday I got probably more of an adrenaline kick from DNF than any game I've played lately. So personally, I'm enjoying it a lot, and I don't at all find it as bad as people say.

I think the unfavorable reviews stem from a mix of insanely high expectations and the fact the game is unpolished as hell. But for me, it's a diamond in the rough.

Ok, I got my copy today. I was a little disappointed by the minuscule size of the bust, but the number of other goodies, including a comic, and the awesome art book more than made up for it. As for the game itself, it is obviously a little rough around the edges, but it is undeniably FUN and hilarious. If you can overlook a game's flawed and just enjoy it, Duke is perfect. I only got a little past the first battlelord fight and tried a bit of multiplayer. The multiplayer was a little choppy, but just as fun as single player and feels straight out of the 1990s in a good way. I really hope the community keeps alive because DNF got a multiplayer encouragment system perfect with the mansion rewards system. NFL 2K5 had a similar system that I enjoyed, and Duke employed it perfectly here. I'm playing the 360 version and the biggest flaw is the long load times, but installing it to my hard drive made them manageable. The driving controls were also noticeable tuned up from the demo and previews, still a little iffy, but not really a problem. Bottom line: It's fun and that's all the matters. Hail to the King Baby!

Am I the only one calling this call of duty with aliens? On ps3 the controls are hauntingly similar to each other.

On 360 the default controls are very different from CoD and Halo, but you do have the option to use their controls plus the "Valve" controls from Half Life and L4D. A nice touch imo.

Guess you had the same reaction I did then.

The clerk at GameStop said that it seems gamers love the game and critics hate it. So far, that seems very true. Gamers are able to look past its flaws and just enjoy it for what it is.

The loading times are okay for me. Lets me grab my bubblegum before playing.

I torrented it, got bored by the time I got the railgun, quit shortly thereafter... I might pick it up again after I get bored with DX:HR, but I doubt that will be any time soon.

Don't insult me. I have trained professionals to do that.

D/loaded the demo, time to try it out.

*edit* Demo was funner than I had been lead to believe, didn't mind the 2 weapons + regen health that much. However the game was a bit too linear for my tastes, especially the driving section *bleugh*. But, being able to draw the battle plan was awesome.

The final game is still rough but MUCH better than the demo. the retail Highway Battle part 2 is greatly improved.

I'm kinda annoyed that they made that demo public since, considering the already bad taste in people's mouths with the reviews, it won't do the game any good. That demo is very rough compared to the finished product and it will turn people away from an amazingly fun game.

Oh, and you get a great set of rewards when you beat the campaign fyi, including a Duke soundboard, all the trailers made over the years, art, developer pictures, cheat codes, it's a really nice touch that you don't see too often these days.

Some of the cheats are great too, like giant heads.

I'm going to get the game if there IS SECRET COMPARTMENTS and Cards/cracks, Twisters, hazardous machinery and what not like in the original game, and *squishes*...

Does it in any way remind of the old duke 3d?

The demo doesn't look that way..

Can someone tell me?

If they turned the arcade duke nukem into something more Half-life style I might not enjoy it too much, duke nukem is about arcade gaming.

Well, it feels kind of like a mix between Duke Nukem and Halo so don't expect anything like Duke 3D. This is actually a very different game surprisingly. But to me it wasn't in a bad way.

I will have to torrent it then so I don't waste my money.

I hated Halo, as far as I'm concerned it's only popular due to one powerful man and hi use of economic and advertising power over new generation gamers...

I love how they squeeze in a CoD joke at the very last moment
