I didn't like it, it's exactly what I hate in all games these days.

Yeah, you've already stated your dissatisfaction with the regenerating health system. And I suppose in the end, you can't please everyone.

I apologize to fans and everyone else for sounding like a broken record. :P

I saw this review on the game, and it's pretty damning:

http://arstechnica.com/gaming/reviews/2011/06/duke-nukem-forever-review-barely-playable-unfunny-and-rampantly-offensive.ars

I haven't played it, but typically the bigger the budget for a game, the less forgiving I am of things like poor writing. For anyone who's played it, the only thing I want to know is how does it compare to the 2001 trailer? I thought that looked fantastic at the time and it still looks like it would be a lot of fun. I love the lines like "Duke, they have the president" and "What are you going to do, save the world all by yourself?" Here's a link, though I'm sure people here have seen it:

It is still a great game, I have had a ton of fun playing it so far. There's one-liners and references, tons of'em, ENORMOUS variety in level design, and the game is pretty darn adult. I mean, this is not something I'd let anyone under the age of 18 play.

The writing is so-so but I don't really care about the writing in a game like this to be honest. I'm having too much fun with the enormous interactivity to really care.

Got about 4 hours in now. Mostly the SP with some MP.

Totally. Fucking. Worth it. The second I saw that Alien Commander come in and heard the music start up? Worth the price of admission alone for me. Mopthership battle was fun if a bit simple. The multiplayer is...potentially good. By which I mean you have to hope that the server isn't too laggy, and some douchebag doesn't manage to hog the Devastator + Jetpack all round. There are a few good easter eggs, the Ego system justifies the interactivity, and there are quite a few good puzzles so far. Also, I have not heard one piece of music that I did not like yet.

Yes, the game is linear as all get out. Not that it's a bad thing at all. The Half-Life series is linear, and I can not tell you how much people suck that series' dick with praise. Duke is surprisingly quiet during "Cutscenes", and only ever says anything when everyone has gotten a word in. Alot of Duke's one liners make me laugh, and the Steroids powerup is fucking awesome. Beer is alright, but it takes a little too mcuh away for what it gives in my opinion. The game also likes to break things up a bit with the odd driving or platforming section (which is a bad thing according to every reviewer in fucking existence). The weapons that I've gotten access to are all satisfying, aside fro mthe Ripper. The Ripper looks ugly, sounds pathetic (Except for the reload), and has some awful firing animations. There are none. The gun just vibrates and has muzzleflash.

Also, I've encountered a turret section, and discovered that use of the turret is optional. Which I thank Triptych for many times over.

So far? I'd recommend it. But only for PC or PS3, though. The 360 version is a turd on a bun with a heaping helping of rotten horse radish from what I hear.

I love you, yet can't stand to know you exist.

I liked the driving sections. Gave a little welcome change in the gameplay for me. I personally never got "tired" of running over pigcops, if you pardon the pun.

So yeah, I agree with you, this game is everything I was expecting in DNF, and a bit more. It didn't disappoint.

810796-14.jpg Got to the queen before I quit playing for tonight. A few days ago I played a bit of the PC version up until half way through the hive, then got the 360 collectors today. The first thing I did before playing it this weekend was to see if it was anything like the trailers that have been released for it, and yes, besides the complete change in scenery, it is pretty well the same game and same idea they were going for back then. Thing is? it has not aged. Sure, they brought it through four different engines, and the game came out ten years after that look at the game in the unreal or quake engine, but the level design and story elements are very post quake 2 and new millennium. This does not hamper the game if you do not really mind playing through something that, but if you expected, as most people seemed to be hoping for, the same kind of innovation what Duke Nukem 3d brought to the table as most people who critically look at video games regularly as they freely come across their desk, paid for by the company that has them show the readers of its website what their critical opinion of how good a game is seem to have expected, they are and will be sorely disappointed. No one knew what this game was going to be like, and now that it is here it turned out to be a game that obviously had hundreds of different people work on it at four different companies. The levels as far as I have seen take constant cues from the enemies of Doom 3, Half-Life (because a lot of them are less Duke 3d then they were in Duke 3d..) as well as the level design of Half-Life 2, Perfect Dark, Prey, Alien Vs Predator and the like.

I can say the 360 version is perfectly fine. My PC can run the game completely maxed out and looks very unreal engine 3ish, with all the shitty lighting and graphical blandness that the engine brings, while my 360 runs it on about medium and a few textures popping here in here and there. I forsook the better graphics of my ps3 in order to have a better controller and achievement points. I consider all 3 versions to really be at par having played the PS3 demo as well.

All I can say is that my friend in 2005 asked me how psyched I am for this game, then asked if I had saw the latest trailer, I said no, then proceeded to watch it. He then told how awesome it was that Duke actually presses the buttons (This happens to be the video you linked, Ross). First thing I did was feel jarred at how Duke could not even be bothered to do that in the final product, as if he was wearing Gordan Freeman's suit and could magically push buttons and open things. When reading reviews and as I progress through the game I keep thinking of the song "It's all be done before - BareNaked Ladies"

Am I the only one calling this call of duty with aliens? On ps3 the controls are hauntingly similar to each other. Not to mention regentative helath nd only two weapons allowed at once. Its like hevy weapons guy meets half life. Then again I haven't played much. I'm at duke dome rite b4 you enter I think. With the former info in mind this is a pretty good Game.

That review may be for a console version? He does make reference to a controller. From what I've heard if you're going to play Duke Nukem: Forever, get it for PC, as the console versions are apparently somewhat sub-par. I can't speak from experience though.

EDIT: Having reached the end of the review, it is indeed a review of one of the console versions. Not sure which.

Feel free to PM me about almost anything and I'll do my best to answer. :)

Wow, some reviewers really hate this game. I know it's supposedly pretty average but there are some really horrible write-ups on this game.

The thing is, I haven't really seen any defense for DNF on the comments for those reviews except for stuff like " Don't expect too much from DNF or you'll be disappointed, it is quite a fun game" or "It wasn't quite the revolution we expected but it's not really as bad as this review says". I thought that there'd be more fanboys for DNF though really but people don't seem to be defending it at all.

I'm defending it fiercely personally. I think Duke Nukem's personality and self-aware humor is welcome in a market dominated by boring COD ripoffs and Half-Life has no personality at all. And the variety in level design, to me, is just insane.

I mean, in most FPS games I play, each level looks more or less the same. Take Fallout 3 or Half-Life 2 for instance, aside from a few differences, each level looks identical. In DNF you have very specific levels, ranging from a casino to an alien hive to the desert. Speaking of which, you don't see many first person shooters nowadays with as Lovecraftien Giger'esque design as the alien hive level in DNF. It was SUCH a breath of fresh air to me!

I'll disagree with you on that. Fallout 3 and HL2 great games for it's atmosphere and storyline with it's own setting. Changing levels like a gloves would be out of the place. DNF is not a serious game. It's all about humor, fun and gameplay. So, yeah, it terms of DNF, big variety is necessary for keeping gamers entertained. Because the storyline is not very complicated and thoughtful. It's like Serious Sam or Painkiller. It has dull storyline, but variety of levels, enemies and weapons still gives you a lot of fun.
