Thunderscape, was one of the last games from SSI. Released in 1995, Thunderscape was supposed to be the PC adaptation of the "pencil & paper" RPG by the same name.

 

However, the developers were overcome by the complexity of this task and axed 80% of the content shortly before launch. Leading to one hell of a crapfest.

 

To name a few :

1. Buggy saved games which killed your party when you loaded them.

2. A black screen where the sky should be.

3. Quests which lacked the steps to complete them.

 

That aside. It was one of many PC games I enjoyed playing.

1. Options that allowed you to customize your fights.

2. A soundtrack that not only provided ambiance, but would change due to an upcoming occurrence.

3. Obtainable characters you felt sympathetic towards. You felt their desperation for redemption, avenging their now dead city, or just their single-minded thought to push back the endless tide of Nocturnals.

 

The source I'm submitting is the FB page of the actual creators of the soundtrack, Dial 911 Productions. They are original, and sound exactly as they do in the game.

There are other soundtracks from various SSI titles, etc.

 

My favorite track is, Thunderscape OST Combat 6.

I actually rather enjoyed that game. It was utterly linear and brainless, but even a lot of today's more slick, narrative-driven first-person exploration games can feel a little bit one dimensional, at least in terms of gameplay. It didn't exactly help that Dante himself is an unbearably smug bellend, even by platinum haired and oddly effete anime standards that the series exudes. That being said a lot of the appeal for me in DMC and DMC 2 may have been in the enemy design, being the perennial monster geek that I am I love the creatures in both titles. The soundtrack is absolutely tekkers though, so good call

 

Speaking of slick, narrative-centric, first-person games whose difficulty veers wildly from chapter to chapter - the soundtrack to

is gorgeous and a serious recommendation for fans of sci-fi inflected dark ambient.

Very fun freeware game. It's a 2D shooter where you float around freely killing baddies, bosses, and collecting power ups. Notable for many reasons: It's the only game I've played where each difficulty has it's complete own map, it also has different enemy and boss patterns depending on the difficulty.

A small freeware platformer based on Maze of Galious on the MSX computer in japan. It's a very fun exploration game, with a stellar soundtrack, which is bafflingly made entirely in midi. Since the soundtrack isn't available anywhere, I've left a dropbox with the original midis. For best effect use the default windows midi sequencer.

A surprisingly large freeware platformer evoking memories of The Legend of Zelda the Wind Waker with a (not freeware) remake coming out soon. My three favorite tracks are Fight or Fight, Duct Work (Electrified), and All Things... Notable for having the highest concentration of plot twists in 10 minutes I've ever seen in a game.

La-Mulana is my vote for best indie game of all time, possibly best game of all time. A massive platformer with a heavy emphasis on cryptic and difficult puzzles. The puzzles mostly involve solving riddles and paying close attention to the environments in the game. They're hard, but also fair, however there's definitely no shame in using a walkthrough. There's the original freeware version and also a not free steam remake. The remake generally has slightly easier puzzles and slightly harder gameplay. Both are fantastic but overall I recommend the remake, though there are enough differences to make playing both worth it. It also has an awesome backstory involving aliens and most religions, past and present with a surprising amount of research put into it. The bandcamp is for the remake soundtrack, and the dropbox has a few songs I like more in the original soundtrack.

Hey Ross, firstly let me say happy late birthday from me, and now, let me get into some pretty amazing soundtracks I'd at least imagine you'd like to take a look at. Now I don't know any game where you'd probably enjoy the entire soundtrack, but I do have a few songs from many different games/anime/shows I'm sure you'd love to hear. A lot of it is softer stuff, but not all of it.

 

The title theme for Ib - I'm not sure what you'd think of this song, but to me personally it really sets the whole mood for the game. Mysterious, creepy, and some how comforting at the same time.

Shadow Hearts: From The New World : Dead Fingers Talk - A lot of people dislike this game, and yeah it is a lot different from the prior two games in the series (JRPG, You'd probably prefer the music over anything) This is one of the main battle themes, and by god I love it like hell. You might to.

Shadow Hearts: From The New World : Great Ghost Dance - I don't even really know how to describe this one, other than it's an epic opening theme for me. They mix a lot of different things into it. I'll admit, you might not find this one as enjoyable, but that's up to you.

Darker Than Black : Kuro - Okay, I promise this is the last one of a softer tone. xD But anyways, this isn't from a video game, so I assumed no one would ever have shown this to you. I love this song for a good amount of reasons, I'd have to assume the one top reason is the song is usually played during a tragic moment or event, and it's a really good mood setter for me.

Ace Attorney : Objection - I don't know what else to say besides the fact that there is nothing more satisfying in life then screaming out objection just to hear this song kick in. I love the Ace Attorney games, and I especially love this one theme from the game.

Soul Eater: Theme of Stein - I imagine at least, that you're not a fan of anime, which is fine. But I think this song especially would be something you'd really enjoy. I love it, that's for sure.

I Am Bread:

Yet another ridiculous game made for the soul purpose of making you pull your hair out, but amongst the frustration of navigating a slice around a local living space there are some, but not a lot of, good tunes.

The 1997 PS1 title I.Q. - Intelligent Qube (aka Kurushi) has the most ridiculously amazing soundtrack for such a basic a puzzle game. There are two games, (Kurushi and Kurushi Final, from 1999), both with great soundtracks.

 

I've looked around for links of ripped files, but since I haven't found a complete set, here are some some youtube vids with decent enough audio. Since these are PS1 titles it's completely possible to rip near-perfect audio from the game CDs, btw.

I have a soft spot for the short but sweet soundtrack of McPixel, a rather simple but very amusing Wario Ware-esque game in which the titular character has a few seconds to figure out what to do in a particular scene. The 8-bit style of the music results in a sound that shockingly minimal (the same percussion samples are pretty much used throughout the entire game, for all tracks) yet surprisingly memorable. It only consists of six measly songs because there is so little of the game to go around, but they are all rad as balls.

Looking up the aforementioned game, I accidentally stumbled upon this soundtrack for a game called Cave Story. I have absolutely no idea what it's about or if its even any good, but if you like melodious and twee chiptune music you you likely find something to tickle your earbuds.

Not sure if it's been mentioned, but the Spyro the Dragon soundtrack has always been my favorite. Every song fit each level perfectly, and even though not every track is the most memorable, they sure do a hell of a job at creating a certain feel for the game. I have several OSTs on my MP3 player, and people always give me puzzled looks when they notice it. I'm glad I can share some here.

Now I'm pretty sure most of the music I'm gonna post was already posted, but hell, I'll post it anyway, because I think they deserve it.

 

So, first off, let's start with something calm. Those musics are from the game Endless Space.

I suggest listening to "Deafen Dawn", "Flawless Theory", and "Beneath the Strings", at least. I think the entire OST is good, with a few amazing tracks, but that's just my personnal advice.

It's a turn-based strategy game set in space, and the chill music really fits. Also, a strong factor that made me like the music, I think, is that the music scales depending on your actions. If you look at the entire galaxy, it will be very calm, but when you zoom on a solar system for instance, it will add a few instruments. It doesn't sound much, but I guarantee it really adds to the atmosphere.

 

In the same vibe, the same composer made soundtracks for a game called Endless Legend. It's also pretty chill, but this time it's set in a Fantasy setting. It's worth taking a shot.
