Birthday thread: Soundtracks

Recommended Posts

Don't know if this has already been posted, new to the forum wanted to get into this for awhile.

However I'm on my way out to a new years party, and my gf decided to drop this soundtrack on me.

Thought hey wait a minute, this needs to be heard by more people.

tldr; Check out the Machinarium Soundtrack

My absolute favorite soundtrack is the entire Metal Slug series. I listen to it so often it almost feels as though I'm haunted by it, but that's okay because it's so fucking COOL. I love it when VG soundtracks choose to be foreground music more than background music, if you catch my meaning. The soundtrack for Metal Slug enhances the tone of the stage and drives the action forward. It brilliantly evokes the feeling of the game and is the perfect accompaniment to the game's already massive amount of character, detail and style. The soundtrack has a foundation of militaristic bravado, and expands in many different directions from there. Hard action, jazz, dramatic, heavy metal, you name it. The instrumentation and use of themes and reprisals is truly impressive. For a perfect example, listen to the Assault Theme, arguably the best track in the entire series. Tunes introduced in the heroic main theme play opposite of and on top of an eerie, menacing main line so that the sense of combat and conflict is represented in music. The line of songs which accompany the final mission in Metal Slug 3 (In the Void, Assault Theme, Into the Cosmos, Kiss in the Dark, the Unknown World, Bioinformatics, Escape, Final Attack) is nothing short of cinematic. Of special note is the soundtrack to Metal Slug 5, which is full on Heavy Metal. I'm not typically much of a heavy metal guy, but HOT DAMN. The highlights here are Zoom Down, Speeder, and Intrigue (note the section where the drums imitate the sound of the Heavy Machine Gun). What I'm trying to say is that the soundtrack gets me fuckin' PUMPED. Here's download links from that Galbadia Hotel site mentioned in the video: http://gh.ffshrine.org/metal-slug-music.php

P.S. Make sure to get one of the downloads that include the Metal Slug 7 OST, as that features an amazing fully orchestrated cover of Assault Theme.

Something else I've been listening to lately is the soundtrack to Duck Game, a recent online versus game. You don't hear a lot of music trying to imitate the Sega Genesis sound, and not only does this game do that really well, it also has some really cool tracks. The entire thing is available as .ogg files in the steam game files, but you can listen to the whole thing on youtube:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3GtToG_j5go

Okay, one more. Your search is over the absolute best song on the NES is here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMESKIO6DRc From an old, obscure game called Solstice: The Quest for the Staff of Demnos, and made by the talented composer, Tim Follin, this song will absolutely blow you away. There's also a totally kick ass cover someone made on OC Remix: http://ocremix.org/remix/OCR02628

Okay, I should probably stop now.

These are a few chant-like tracts from medieval 2:Total War, a strategy game where you control a kingdom or empire in medieval Europe/Mediterranean regions.

Not sure if someone already posted this or you dont like these kinds of tracts but its worth it to throw them out for you. And Happy birthday!(three days later...)

I'm not going to give any individual songs, because all the songs from these games are absolutely masterful. To this day, I remember the tunes of tons of these songs by heart.

Would like to also recommend Xenogears, Endless Space, Neir, Flight, Risk of Rain, Strike Suit Zero/Infinity, Hawken, Homeworld, World of Goo, Heroes of Might and Magic, Arcanum, Shenmue, Gunz the Duel, To The Moon (and A Bird Story by extension) and Tower of Guns, as soundtracks people have beaten me to posting.

Dustforce and Cloudbuilt have been mentioned, but I'd like to share my favorites from them.

I have no idea how to class genres of music, so I'll just go with my gut.

Dustforce is a precision platformer that was somewhat popular on release and it's soundtrack is chip-tuney/classical/electronic. You can find the soundtrack here

http://lifeformed.bandcamp.com/album/fastfall

http://lifeformed.bandcamp.com/album/fastfall-extras

Pillars of Pepper and It's Not Supposed to be Snowing are excellent and I feel represent the soundtrack well, but I'm an uneducated rube so.

Cloudbuilt is also a platformer and it's soundtrack is more classical/electronic. You can find the soundtrack here

https://jacoblincke.bandcamp.com/album/cloudbuilt-complete-original-soundtrack

https://jacoblincke.bandcamp.com/album/additional-speed

I haven't played it as much as Dustforce yet, but Relics of Vigor is excellent.

Now for a unique recommendation, Armored Core. Just the whole damn series. The games go from a heavy, industrial sound to a more classical electronic sound with the shift happening in AC4. There are vocals, but they're more sounds instead of leading, except in AC5 where there are a few songs that have vocal leads.

Sorry for all the youtube links tho. I would also like to mention Thomas was Alone for it's somber chiptuneness, Lovely Planet for it's cheery upbeat tunes (perfect contrast to sadistic gameplay), and Disciples 2 (I also recommend checking out the art of the game as well.). I don't really have any individual recommendations for these, but they're worth checking out.

I'd definitely recommend the game Gunpoint's soundtrack. It has a jazz sort of theme, and although this doesn't have the same effect listening to it on a .wav file, in the game when you switch between crosswire mode, and regular movement the soundtrack changes to a different set of instruments, but a similar song in the same position as before.

Are you a fan of techno music Ross? Some of the songs that turn up at the end of your Gaming Dungeon episodes suggests you might be. If so I recently rediscovered an old favourite of mine.

There was a third-person shooter Ghost In The Shell game for the PS1 (which you can read a fair bit about on Wikipedia) that had an excellent soundtrack. This was back in 90's and I was only a kid, so I recall very little of the actual gameplay. What stuck in my mind was the awesome animated intro, it's stylized hyperviolence and overt sexuality making on impression on my youthful brain. I recently found a high quality upload of the original video on

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hak9VvAyLEI, as well as various higher audio quality uploads on the actual song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=369FJqew854 by Japanese DJ Takkyu Ishino.

I'd highly recommend listening to the games accompanying double CD soundtrack if you can. If you want a physical copy there are apparently three for sale on Discogs for fairly absurd amounts of money. Alternatively you could listen to

featuring the correctly arranged tracks from both CD's. I almost didn't bring this last link up because you said you would prefer not to listen to music via Youtube, but you can probably find a quality download of the album somewhere if you are really interested.

There was even a ten track vinyl version, if you wanted to be especially hardcore... :3

I'm going to use youtube links, but the quality isn't too bad on these. You probably know of some of these games, but I'm going to post them anyways. They should all be in playlists unless there's only one song (either in the game or that is good).

The Simpsons Hit and Run (One of my favorite game soundtracks, in the top 3. My favorite song is Cell-Outs.):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TXXG3fQu5YU

Boogerman (Sega Genesis): https://youtu.be/GJ10zbhcAoM?list=PL2BC5C377267EDE1B

Solstice (NES) (This one is amazing because it's NES music. He (Tim Follin) used a ton of tricks to make the song and it takes up most of the cartridge's space. It's actually bigger in size than the game itself.):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ypNPxwnppU0

Silver Surfer (NES) (Another amazing NES song):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-J0H5ah1G7A

Spyro 1, 2, 3 (PS1) (by Stewart Copeland, all of it's good. Also, fun fact, Wizard Peak has a sample that he also used in the Amanda Show's intro. Weird.):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N4i-cvK8s90 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SF5HZWKfeco https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QdB5cykpYXY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=99P95f5CoPA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cnGZLrzrvXI

Never played it, but this is midi, I believe. Bowser's Inside Story (DS):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ckxy-i7Dc5U

Jak 1, 2, 3 (PS2) (All the music is pretty good.):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=58vU6z-6nWg

Jak X (A racing game themed around the Jak Series. All the music is pretty good if I remember correctly.): https://youtu.be/dL3o5L56UPQ?list=PL_ld56BSGd2sQSZVesg-9ifCq2jgI98ca

Futurama (PS2) (Some voice, some samples from the TV show (depends on the song). Great music, totally unexpected when I bought this game. Few or no FULL playthroughs of this game on youtube. Pretty hard. Still like $60 on ebay because there's not a lot of copies for some reason.): https://youtu.be/5JwtjunEwr8?list=PL36XqHlyNGMxbO-VCA4QN-UF3q-eP9bqF

M&M's: The Lost Formulas (PC) (Now, I know what you're thinking. What am I going on about, an M&Ms game? But really, it's good, and I can't find a good upload of the music. It's MIDI, and I have copies of the music. Ross, if you want the MIDIs, email me. I don't use my email often, so here it is...hopefully I won't get spammed. [email protected] Yeah, the email address sucks, but I had the name for a while, so I use it.)

Diddy Kong Racing (N64) (This is a kids racing game that has Conker from Conker's Bad Fur Day before Rare made Conker's BFD, thinking he'd be in a kids game. Great music. Favorite song: Hot Top Volcano): https://youtu.be/JN5yJypyyRo?list=PL194EA9D04B57AE7F

Sly Cooper And the Thevius Raccoonus (PS2) (I've only played the first, never finished it. Great music that fits the mood of the game, and I swear Renard used a sample of this music in Down Here, but I can't remember what song it was. Anyways, back on topic, great music.): https://youtu.be/eZFueoNLqmc?list=PLE58A25EE716B2CF2 (Bonus is the boss music from the swamps, which I can only find in a gameplay video) https://youtu.be/73MfhUPuYr8?t=2m51s

Game Music w/ Vocals, not recorded just for the game:

SSX Tricky (PS2) (Great music, tracks by Run DMC, Mixmaster Mike, John Morgan, Rasmus...also, a CD was released, but there's a ton of music NOT included on it, which SUCKS. Thanks, EA. Some cool people ripped the least compressed files available straight from the game in wav and I believe EAM or something like that. Look for Jukebox versions as they are the normal game versions. Weird. Also, the second link gives the pre race music, which you couldn't find unless you ripped the music yourself. John Morgan commented, and he's trying to get permission to upload high quality versions of his music!): https://youtu.be/5z1d5eZ5dVw https://youtu.be/Q-lwwZ3DFhw

SSX 3 (PS2) (This is the intro movie music by Andy Hunter. Love this song, fits perfectly. It's the first song you hear when you start up the game.): https://youtu.be/y34ay0L5PJI

https://youtu.be/FvTf06gYK-A (The next one is by Basement Jaxx, great song.) https://youtu.be/eSwI95Pvp8U

DJ Hero 1, 2 (Xbox 360) (Though finding music from this is hard (usually they just have a bot play it and it's awful in the free mix areas. Slow taps, off rhythm, etc. Or rewinds are used. Some songs are original and only in the game. This game actually made me buy a few CDs off ebay so I could listen to more of these people's music. Also, if there's any video of the game, seizure warning.)): Galvanize (Chemical Brothers) https://youtu.be/6b9ci_z4v7M https://youtu.be/NoM9ee3vU3s https://youtu.be/r5O19LaLId0

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 (PS2) (Okay, I have to include the this song just because the lyrics are great, but the rest of the game (including THPS 1, 2, 3, Underground, Underground 2, etc) has pretty good music.): https://youtu.be/hDolkBP98Mg

I'd include more, but I'd be here all day. There's apparently unused music in Spyro, so there's more than I've heard, apparently. Anyways, there's probably more, but this is all I can think of right now.

Hey there .o/

I wouldn't know how to define which music genre they belong to, but I like most of the soundtracks from Alien Shooter 2, which are available as a playlist on youtube here :

When you have the game installed, you can just grab the .ogg files in the ".\music" folder.

I might mention some better known games, but I didn't find a mention about them in this thread so just in case.

Not mentioned yet

Incubation: Time is running out

Most of the tracks sounds the same, although they fit the game well. But, there is one track which is quite different from the others:

Title music:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nP_BMkWofPQ

The odd track:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Jn6xN-dvl0

You heard the First Contact, you heard the most of the game's soundtrack. The Incubation of the Insect Nation exists in two versions, I prefer the first one.

Anyway, .ogg files of those two tracks from GOG version of the game:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/9o8ggkwl2cr6zft/Incubation_music.rar?dl=0

Majesty: Fantasy Kingdom Sim

One of the tracks:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TbRlIHfZ7Xs

Full soundtrack from Majesty Gold HD version:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/tx1d34rc7jaxxzm/majesty_music.rar?dl=0

Knights and Merchants

Just what would one expect from an middle ages RTS:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tESAuxluOK0

KKND 2

Post-apocalyptic RTS. This track is probably the best:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mECdES52F_Q

Submarine Titans

Now, this one is an abandonware. Well made sci-fi RTS with submarines and alien submarines, didn't see similiar theme anywhere else. Good soundtrack as well, different between playable sides:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MCtVgJWLVns

UFO Afterlight

Third game in series of games with similiar concept to X-Com. Most of the soundtrack is good:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3C1T9nz7hs

Shogo MAD

What deserves a mention is the intro music:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RIq09rILxzQ

Orion: Prelude

Also known as Dino: Horde. Never got bored of this one:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aiBzywph15E

Planetside 2

Different themes for the sides in conflict. Don't like much the TR ones, but VS and NC are great:

NC:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zJS_al-QhBw

VS:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cdv13cHWl4U

Sins of Solar Empire Rebellion

Got some good tracks, for example:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-C39cQ_q2g

I noticed you can buy the soundtrack on Steam.

Settlers 4

I think the whole soundtrack is great, especially Viking themed ones:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zXdZ5bcmQyY

Already mentioned

Age of Wonders

The closer to the source the better. Original .IT files from my CD copy:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/jsodd4vmm53qfgm/AoW_music.rar?dl=0

Creeper World 3

Someone already posted a link to youtube, and this game has really amazing soundtrack. I just want to add that you can download the soundtrack from Knuckle Cracker website:

http://knucklecracker.com/common/extras.php

Stalker SoCh

Must not forget this song:

I recommend the soundtrack for MotoRacer 2. This was an old 90's motorcycle racing game that came with my video card. The music is kind of like an instrumental ska/punk sound like Sublime/311

http://www.stafaband.co/mp3/download/soundtrack_moto_racer_2.html

This is a bit more popular but I also recommend the soundtrack to Interstate '76. Instrumental Funk

Oh boy oh man, you want a good soundtrack? You're gonna wanna listen to

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gj9kxitOe0o

Terraria isn't the most obscure game out there, but it does have a pretty niche following.

The soundtrack though, I think everyone can enjoy.

It's a total trip from start to finish with some surprises thrown in for good measure.

I strongly urge you to listen to it all the way through. It's surprisingly diverse and if you can stomach a little whimsy, I think you'll enjoy it.

If you don't listen to the entire thing, here's the three songs you've gotta hear:

I can't express how happy I was when you asked us for game Soundtracks.

I'll share this link where you can get the full "Shin Megami Tensei IV" Soundtrack (http://mass-destruction.tumblr.com/SMT-Music) along with all the other SMT saga soundtracks.

SMT IV has one of the greatest, longest and marvelous soundtracks I've ever heard in any game, you probably won't play it (it's a 3DS exclusive) but the Soundtrack is a MUST LISTEN.

I recommend this tracks:

-Main Theme

-Ikebukuro Underground District

-Challenge Quest B

-Battle - b8

But I know you will enjoy the full soundtrack.

Also, check out the SMT Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers Soundtrack, that thing is rad.
