Fritz Lang's 1927 masterpiece Metropolis is a classic sci-fi film with utterly incredible effects for the time. For me, however, the best part is the soundtrack. The original score is perhaps one of the best ever written, and I highly suggest watching the movie with it.

You can buy the full album somewhere else.

The Adventures of Batman and Robin (sega genesis - 1995)

This whole soundtrack by Jesper Kid is worth listening to, lots of electronic beats. Here's one of my favorite tracks: http://www.sigmaecho.com/batman/music/extreme_boss.mp3

And of course the complete score if you're interested, i couldn't just pick the best songs because most of them are really cool as well: http://www.sigmaecho.com/batman/batman.html#anchor

Happy birthday again :D

So far as I know via search and stuff, noone has mentioned "Night in the Woods" yet, apart from the fact that the trailer gives me goosebumps:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KUZDxMgxguY

The soundtrack, or what I've heard of it so far at least, is absolutely fantastic, there's these games that have 'feeling' to them, undertale is a good recent example in that sense, where a lot of the music reaaaaaaally fits a narrative, a style, a story, whatever... And I feel "Night in the Woods" does that perfectly, and though the game isn't out yet, I cannot wait for it, I hope it'll be the experience it promises to be :D

Here's a link to some of the soundtrack:

https://infiniteammo.bandcamp.com/album/night-in-the-woods-preview

I mean, it's from the guy who did Aquaria, also a game with a fantastic soundtrack :D

The "Timesplitters" series has some great music. Timesplitters 2 in particular-

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xWtqc4ERo4A , https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cykxQLTDf4s , etc.

999 has some pretty good music as well-

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EjQfY47pFNs , https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9GLYF5O1gMY . It's a great visual novel with a few (scarce) puzzles in the mix. I'd recommend it and its' sequel if you like good stories.

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective is great too-

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQ3khsva6E8 , https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hxzU3wRZxcM . I wouldn't stray too far from saying it's my favorite game, and i'd recommend it to anyone. I'll put it as a request in the 'Game Dungeon wishlist' thread.

I'm a fan of the Remember Me soundtrack. It's kinda futuristic orchestral. A couple of the tracks have vocals of a sort, but in general it's pretty nice. The game itself was ironically rather forgettable, but the soundtrack is fantastic.

One can purchase it as DLC on Steam, or it may be available elsewhere. Or if you simply refuse to buy it, I have a download for it here: http://www.mediafire.com/download/2qz9t2zqh84t7h9/Remember_Me_OST.zip

I'm also a fan of the Gone Home soundtrack. It's very slow and ambient, nice for chilling out. I'm sure it's available somewhere, but if you insist, here it is: http://www.mediafire.com/download/rebj4zylk3aw18p/Gone_Home_OST.zip

Drakan: Order of the Flame

A game I loved as a child, and still love today. It's got some pretty memorable songs in it, too- so it was definitely the first game that popped into my mind. Thinking about it, I honestly think it's a game that you would absolutely lose your mind over. I know I did, and do. It's an action adventure game, it's story is- I'll be totally honest; completely forgettable, but the gameplay itself was phenominal. It's right up there with Dungeon Siege as one of my favorite games of all time. You venture into a lively fantasy world, use a whole cartload of different weapons, ride and fight dragons, watch everyone you know die before your very eyes...

It's a terrific game.

I found this link here for some of the songs in the soundtrack, but unfortunately, it doesn't have all of them missing two of them.

that contains the two songs that the other link does not. I'm sorry it had to come to that, but that's how it has to be, I suppose.

The Neverhood

This game is... a little bit different. It's soundtracks are particularly memorable- and the style of the music is... radically different. This game also ranks as one of my favorite games- in fact, it's my number one puzzle game of all time. Everything about it is so... Well, it's a unique game, to say the least. Made entirely from claymation, this game is absolutely fantastic and I urge and push everyone I meet to play through this game. I love it to death, it's just so charming.

An odd soundtrack for an odd game. That's the best way I can put it. Please, Ross. Please listen to this queer music and fall in love with it's strange charms and near-disturbing levels of silliness.

and there was never a sequel to Drakan don't even look it up don't

Tides of War | A track from Warlords of Draenor that has the largest build-up to climax ratio ever, but I still greatly enjoy the strings. This is most easily accessed via iTunes as it came with the soundtrack CD. With every expansion, Blizzard always has at least a few diamonds in the rough and these first two are the most worthwhile from the latest WoW expansion.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYYrfxtBdzY - Malach H2 | This track has shamanistic vocals that I've never heard before in a videogame. Now, I know that you discouraged YouTube links, but this was literally the only copy of this track that I could find. I even braved the darkest corners of the internet where the Plague, rabies, and gingivitis breed in abundance to find lossless media for you! Alas, it was to no avail! This track only exists on YouTube and in WoW's game archives that are only accessible via tools like this.

Command & Conquer: Red Alert | Pretty much everything from this album. Also very easily accessed though iTunes, but since EA owns it now you may not want to get it.

Kid2Will | An indie artist (afaik) whose music I always enjoy, although his latest has noise in it on some speakers.

Hey, Ross. Got two contributions. You may have heard both but just in case:

I absolutely adore Lord of the Rings music and the game "Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures Unchained" has a superb soundtrack. There's some singing in a few tracks (apparently entirely in Icelandic), but it's mostly instrumental.

Here's a rip of the CD but I had to buy it myself. It was just that good:

iE9aOIk4AMM

You can buy the CD or MP3s from Amazon if you want.

And, since you say you're "less likely to play" some console exclusives, for a rocking happy fun time, the soundtrack for "Mario Kart 8" is a great choice, if you like funky instrumentals. ;)

WH1LYGj6aNY

No idea if you can purchase this one easily, though...

(I know these are YouTube videos, but they're only previews anyway.)

Don't know if anyone mentioned this, but the Cave Story remastered soundtrack is really good https://dl.dropbox.com/u/22696601/Audio/OST/CaveStoryOSTRemastered.rar

There was never an official release of the soundtrack as far as I know, and the above link is the only download I could find for it. It does appear to be missing a few tracks, however. The complete(?) soundtrack is on youtube, and the sound quality seems fine to me

My second recommendation is the Shatter soundtrack https://sidhe.bandcamp.com/album/shatter-official-videogame-soundtrack

Each track does drag on and become repetitive, but it's still good listening

Finally, I'm just going to link to my (current) favourite OCRemix tracks

The Command and Conquer series can't get enough love, and as mentioned before, Red Alert 3 has that great over the top music, but I have a soft spot for Command and Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight. Sure, It's way too different from the original gameplay and is rather rough on the edges, but that soundtrack is unforgettable. My favorite is this one, Welcome Back, Commander:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WiYrtbsCKNU

Endless Legend has nice ambient tunes, nothing too dramatic like something you would find in a fantasy game, a gentle soundtrack if you will:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0GtyP_suH20

Far Cry 4 soundtrack revolves around contemplative and exotic music and suddenly changes to some tracks with fast tempo and modern beats, not unlike the game itself. This is a great soothing one, The Mountain Watches:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=welUaSIxUC0

Dragon Age Inquisition is a triple A game and likewise has a Hollywood level soundtrack, my personal favorite:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AA0pbPfLm60

Broken Age from Double Fine Studios managed to create a quirky and interesting soundtrack:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4IjbF0ZXMzk

Planetary Annihilation has possibly one of the most epic game soundtracks of all time, but that's a requirement when you are throwing entire planets at your enemies! As a side note, there are similarities between this soundtrack and Gustav Holst's symphony The Planets, so kudos for a great reference!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=COzEWpOfwVk

Composed by Steve Burke, Kameo: Elements of Power has this powerful and fantastic music, way above your average soundtrack:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CRomyx61cVo

Killzone 3 also is a heavy weight with it's full symphonic soundtrack, not far behind John Williams:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4vR5pNUp0E

Wolfenstein The New Order is a strange but beautiful one. There's this weird 60's vibe in the background, almost psychedelic, and then from nowhere it dives into a full throttle horror, as if someone started drilling your skull with an industrial grade power tool. Lobothomy has never been so sweet:

I know there was a request for no Youtube links, so I'll try to add some MP3 download locations if I can, but they're rather difficult to find. I know they exist, but I haven't looked them up in years.

Battle Arena Toshinden (1):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Bwx01foVgI

This is only for one of the characters, but trust me, almost every piece is great. I won't post them all to avoid spamming unless requested, but the names of the characters are as follows:

Eiji *****

Kayin ****

Sophia ***

Fo *****

Rungo *****

Duke ****

Ellis ****

Mondo ***

Gaia ****

Sho ***

Goemon's Great Adventure (AKA Mystical Ninja 2: Starring Goemon)

I'd hand pick the best tracks, but honestly I'd be including about 80% of the soundtrack as some of the best. Only a few are duds.

Jetmoto 1 & 2

Nightmare

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sUtzVtfjgbQ

Much of the soundtracks of both games are very hit or miss, but Nightmare is a theme that has stuck with me for nearly two decades now.

Dreamweb ORIGINAL Original Soundtrack

Here are some of my favorite soundtracks:

1. Bastion - My favorite game soundtrack ever. By Darren Korb

2. Turrican - This plus anything else by Chris Huelsbeck. Light techno style mixed with other orchestral tracks.

3. Portal 2 - You are probably familiar with this one, but I like it. Also it is available for free on the official website. http://www.thinkwithportals.com/music.php

4. Transistor - Haunting, great soundtrack.

5. Endless - By Fly By No, these tracks are long, but have some distinct tunes.

6. System Shock/System Shock 2

By the way, I would love it if you would do a playthrough of Bastion if you haven't already. You might like it!

If you need help getting any of these, let me know.
