I have three games that have really good soundtracks. The first two are from Zone of the enders, and Zone of the enders 2. Now ones and a while you can find there soundtracks, so if you really like it you can try to find the official copy's. Now the next game Star Wars Republic Commando, I have never been able to find a official copy for its soundtrack.

Remember that game that all the Let's Players did that was super spooky? No, not Five Night's At Freddy's, the one before. Not Slender. Listen, it's Cry of Fear. What made this mod of Half Life 1 stand out was it's excellent soundtrack by Muddasheep and Andreas Ronnberg; perfect mix of melancholy and tension. I'd suggest playing Cry of Fear on game dungeon, but that's your call.

Bravely Default has amazing fantasy-esque music, composed by Revo, who makes similar music on his own. Quite reminiscent of the Trans Siberian Orchestra. It was my go-to Jul music for this holiday (few samples):

Bonus: If you are looking for a (lesser known) fantasy type epic music that is occasionally mixed with electric instruments, I'd direct towards checking out the God Eater 2 soundtrack. There are a few good tracks there that stick out, but mostly it's the kind of stuff that drowns more into the background.

If you want the good quality soundtracks (which are not YouTube compressed) that are either hard to come by via legal means or include otherwise would be missing tracks, I recommend searching the ffshrine forums. It requires a registration and it is a forum, but the soundtracks distributed there by the community are generally of a very good quality, some 320kbps or even in a flac format.

Basically one of my favourite game OSTs of all time (alongside Tyrian, which you already know) is the OST of Granado Espada, or as it is called in the west "Sword of the new World". It's an MMORPG set in the pioneering age, where you set out with your "familiy" to explore the "new world" (aKa not actually america, but still kind of america).

 

Basically everything is Baroque/Roccoco as hell. Corsets, Wigs, Muskets, Swords, Armor, Corset cleavage, Magic, Aztecs/Mayas?, Dinosaurs and then there's this guy.

 

So you would expect this game to have a Classic soundtrack with only Orchestral music and choir stuff, right? Actually many have critizised the game exactly for NOT having a ... standard generic OST. The music for the cities is certainly Classic, as is the login screen, but the majority is different stuff? (sorry, I don't know the genres, I guess electro music? Is it even that? I'm bad basically). And you'd certainly think to yourself "How does that work? A woman in a corset and wig running through a dungeon made of pirate ships while listening to electro music?" And I'd say "I don't know, it just does."

 

Unfortunately I don't know where you can find the whole OST on the internet. I always ripped my version directly from the game. There's most of it on Youtube, but very scattered. The playlist with the most songs in them has like close to 100 songs, but I have 203 songs and i'm not even up-to-date (I'm probably only missing like 10 songs though, I should update the game a re-rip the OST >_>). I don't think there is a torrent with the up-to-date OST either. Most of the songs are either by S.F.A or SoundTeMP. I think Ragnarok Online also had songs from one of these artists.

AND I just realized this year that Granado Espada is bascially a Dota MMO (every character has a passive, 3 basic abilities and 1 ultimate; the abilities and ultimate depend on your weapon(s) and the stance you are currently in) and it has a dota-like pvp mini-instance (two sides with 2 lanes, towers and a boss instead of an ancient plus you have to farm waves and objectives to get upgrades) that is mostly used for farming items ... I feel like I need to contribute some more obscure material.

 

EYE Divine Cybermancy is a cyberpunk RPG that deals with pretty much everything in the genre while packing it all into one convoluted and confusing storyline with an equally hard to understand UI and control scheme. Its really really good once you get over that initial barrier and the music is extremely nice. The official page for the game has all the music included in-game, but the composer, Olivier Zuccaro, offers a few more tracks. I recommend checking out QNR Extended, QNB, and QNF. If you really want the extra cyberpunk stuff from this guy, he also did

is more well known for being a really good tactical shooter with a steep learning curve that falls bit more on the extreme realism end of the scale. This game's music puts so much tension into a frenzied battle and its use of dynamically changing music allows for the mood to change as the situation changes. The game changes music according to your soldier's morale, completely changing the tone of the battle. The one bad thing about the official soundtrack is that its actually missing tracks that are played in-game. I don't know why people do this especially when those tracks are some of the best in the game. It's the same deal as Red Orchestra 2 except now you have Imperial Japan and the United States. Lots more plucky strings, flutes, and brass than the more melancholy string-heavy Soviet and German music. Thankfully, I believe that the official soundtrack for Rising Storm 2 is complete and has all the tracks found in-game.

Hell, I'm assuming most people here has heard some of these tracks at the very least so I won't go too in-depth about it. You can download the remastered tracks in the Vault Archive album for free here.

 

But you're now probably asking where all the obscure stuff is. "Hey man I was promised obscure stuff, but I've heard of these games." Well buckle up because now's where we get to the actually obscure things.

 

is a solid sidescrolling beat-em up by MAGES., a company more well known for Steins;Gate. I'm sure that the anime-style art will bother some people, but it would be a crime to skip this title just for the aesthetics. Sadly, I can't find the full OST online. The full soundtrack includes 33 tracks of some of the best chiptune you'll ever hear in your life. I urge you to go and get this game if you like beat-em ups or just want really good music. It's $2.99 on Steam right now and you can grab the OST for $1.24.

 

is not your average Japanese bullet hell (I know this will go down just fine with Ross). To be fair, I've never beaten the second stage of the game on normal difficulty and have never gotten past the third stage on the easiest, but I think we can ignore the difficulty for now and just focus on the music. The soundtrack found on the Steam version of Suguri is not the original one, but a remake.

I recommend checking out Green Bird, Rendevous, Tough & Intense, and Impact. The Suguri series has a ton of music due to a cult following mainly in Japan. The game spawned 2 spinoff fighting/bullet hell games (

and

) and a prequel game called

(which conveniently happens to be coming out on Steam on January 6). If you still think that isn't enough music there's also four remix albums.

However I can't find a complete version of the third album, Sugurashi, online. You're not missing a whole ton much since the missing tracks are mainly just mashed up versions of two different tracks, but they're still very nice to have. Since a lot of this music can't be legally obtained anymore, here's a download link with almost all the music. If anyone really wants the full collection, shoot me a PM and I'll send you the entire collection.

The game has a lot of unique charm in just about everything whether it be the story, characters, music, setting, mechanics etc... It uniquely utilizes the DS touch controls and split screen unlike any other game, making it one of the very few titles that feels like it can only belong on a DS. The music combines a little bit of everything from 2007 Japanese pop culture. You'll see some rap and hip-hop and then change to a little bit of rock. Some tracks even include both Japanese and English vocals. I would recommend checking out Game Over (Busy Dizzy and Lazy), Detonation, The One Star, and Twister (That Power is Yet Unknown) at the very least.

I recommend the soundtrack from Digital Devil Saga 2: Avatar Tuner (Mouthful I know). The game has a ton of amazing battle music and some pretty good background music with very few vocal tracks. I especially recommend the songs Battle for Survival and The Divine Entity. I also could recommend the soundtrack to the first Digital Devil Saga, but for me the second game's soundtrack is much better.

Blazblue:

There are kinda two soundtracks here. Calamity Trigger & Continuum Shift both go for something of a techno-rock style, with a bit of baroque influence throughout. (YouTube Playlist for preview) Also, the included OST for Continuum Shift in the Steam download is only at 128kbps MP3, so you'll want to extract the .ogg files from the game data for those using some kind of .pac file unpacker, such as QuickBMS.

 

The other soundtrack is Chronophantasma's, which ditches the techno aspect and goes full force into speed metal and neo-baroque styles. No Steam release until February, so I'm not sure how best to get the OST until then other than one of the console versions (assuming it is included), but this is the least badly compressed YouTube playlist I can find.

I wouldn't say I'm much of a freak when it comes to video game soundtracks; generally I just listen to artists I enjoy, but occasionally I'll come across a game with a soundtrack that really sticks with me for one reason or another. You may or may not be able to get into it, but I'll share it all anyway.

 

 

I also don't have any direct links to any downloads for most of these OSTs since it's almost exclusively licensed stuff that's for sale somewhere on the internet, but I'll try to avoid linking you to hosting sites that mess with the quality of the music since I AM a freak about that. I'll also try to supply you with links to purchase the music for yourself if you happen to want it.

 

 

 

First is the OST for FEZ, composed by Disasterpeace. The game is absolutely worth playing if you're into platformers, but I always come back for the soundtrack alone. "Beacon" in particular is my favorite.

Next is the OST for Machinarium, composed by Tomáš Dvořák. I haven't actually played this game, but I have seen a playthrough to the end and kind of regret not trying it myself. I really enjoyed the OST for this game the same way I enjoyed it for FEZ. It's just great for zoning out or trying to focus on work. I listen to "By The Wall" the most.

The next one is a pretty big change of pace: The OST for DmC: Devil May Cry. This one was composed in two parts: a heavy/power metal soundtrack by Combichrist, and a drum and bass/electro soundtrack by Noisia. I really only enjoyed the Combichrist half while I was playing the game, and it wouldn't be something I listen to during my free time, but that's just personal taste. It also has a lot of singing so I don't think you'd get into it. You can track it down pretty easily if you're still interested, but I prefer Noisia's work. Particularly "Lilith's Club". There's a download link for both iTunes and Beatport in the description, but personally I'd recommend Beatport since I avoid iTunes like the plague.

 

 

The last video game OST that comes to mind is an old favorite of mine: Bomberman Hero, composed by June Chikuma. This was an N64 game I played a whole lot back in the day, and it was one of the first games that I think ever had a drum and bass soundtrack. A lot of the tracks on it are really catchy, and in particular I wake up with "Zip" and "Redial" in my head more often than I feel is normal. The only issue with this soundtrack, however, is that I don't think it's for sale anymore. It's a pretty old game, though, so I think downloading from a third party shouldn't be too much of an issue. If that doesn't bother you, I found some downloads at KHInsider.

As an added bonus, there's this old flash playlist I found years ago that has a huge assortment of video game tracks from all over the place piled together and put on shuffle. To my knowledge, it's still being updated every once in a while and I've even found two versions of it. One is the original and definitely has the most amount of music on it, and the other is smaller and seems to only have slower, more mellow tracks to sift through (with some rain going in the background for effect). They're both pretty awesome and definitely worth leaving on for a while if you want a good old dice roll to decide what to listen to. I've ended up stumbling across a lot more great music than I thought I would with this thing. The only downside, of course, is there aren't any download links for any of this stuff. You'd have to track them down on your own.
