Sexuality.

Recommended Posts

Here's the thing - and you can apply it to just about anything in life. Your sexuality, preferences, things you enjoy in general - are all normal. At least, if you treat them like they're normal, the people around you likely will as well.

The issue is when people want to be special snowflakes and act like being gay or liking a certain show as if it makes them different from everyone else in some way. Plenty of people (such as myself) are bi or happen to like a show about colorful ponies. If the subject even comes up, I treat it like a completely normal thing and others tend to as well.

I mentioned being bi in my health class the other day and my teacher pointed out (later, just to me) that only one person had turned their heads.

Now, there is a problem with gender identity. It's something that's not been fully realized that some people strongly identify as a gender separate from their biological sex. It's not a difficult concept, but it's severely underexposed to society as a whole. It's embarrassing enough to mistake a woman for a long-haired man, but then you learn that "she" identifies as male, so wait, which pronoun would be right to use in that situation?

I feel like the whole issue could be resolved with the existence of a gender-neutral pronoun that would be appropriate to use for a single individual. However, as it is, people just don't make the distinction of the fact that gender and biological sex are in fact two separate things. And I myself find it odd and disorienting, but the problem for me is that I see my own gender as a non-issue. I wouldn't care if people thought I was and identified me as female, but the fact that I am biologically male and don't have powerful emotions about my gender causes me to identify as male out of pure simplicity.

Obviously transgender is a bit of a tangent to the topic, I wanted to point out that particular exception to my "treat it like it's normal and others likely will as well" guideline.

But yeah, all in all, I'd say sexuality is a non-issue and that in order to move forward, the various societies that haven't yet (looking at you, United States), need to realize this.
