Well, if you are in the USA, and decide to call in for troubleshooting a Motorola or ARRIS brand modem/router, you'll end up talking either to me, or someone in the same room as me.

Don't insult me. I have trained professionals to do that.

Wow! I haven't been here since... I don't know. Half a year? One year? Wait, what year is it? :D

Okay, general chat. I got this. Hmm.

Ah, yes. I have a pretty good job, nice office, amazing salary (for a part time job at least) and friendly coworkers.

I've got my red belt in Northern Seven Star Praying Mantis Kung fu.

And I did my semester almost perfectly at my university.

So everything has been great so far.

My computer just had a critical error and the C drive needed to be "refreshed" as my computer called it. Windows had to be reinstalled but it saved a lot of my files. Thankfully I was able to salvage my cryengine and unity games but the landscape needs to be rebuilt in Cryengine. Not too much of a problem, I love working on the landscapes.

Still, highly inconvenient.

If you ever need troubleshooting, let me know... I do it a lot, and this new job means I'll do it even more.

Keep backups, frequent ones, and multiple ones if possible. Actually the 3-2-1 rule is decent: 3 backups, 2 different formats, 1 off-site.

Actually I don't recommend off-site storage unless you don't have the ability to store it on-site. It's too easy to have someone steal information from off-site storage systems, or mess with them in ways that will further complicate your life if you ever use those backups.

But then if bad happens and you lose your on-site backups you won't have any backup no more.

I have 2 external drives with everything backed up on now. Normally I'm good about backing up my things but I've been so busy lately that a lot of my normal routines have been dropped in lieu of finishing these projects. Of course, that decision backfired like most of my "it'll be fine" decisions :x

If you're not concerned about power outage problems or the like you could plug one of the external drives in full-time and use a program to automatically sync your projects on there. If you dont have a program to do that I can send you a few

Nah it's fine. I usually just manually back up after every lengthy work session. Thanks though.

If power outages concern you, you can get a battery backup system... It's called a UPS, or Uninterruptible Power Supply. It should give you a 5-10 minute buffer zone for a full computer system in case of power outages, or up to a day for most peripherals.

As for regular backups, it's virtually unheard of that you would need to go to a secondary backup, much less a tertiary... Those circumstances occur only when there is a massively catastrophic problem that destroys or damages the other backups. (either a coordinated and informed attack by someone intending harm, or something else that would be of far more concern than having a usable backup for files and computer settings)

Say your primary backup is an external hard drive. It's still a hard drive. Hard drives have a tendency to break down in the worst possible ways at the worst possible times. I've actually seen a head crash (well more like 'heard it' but same idea).

Anyways I was trying to read an article on a website and it wanted me to do a stupid survey question, "how many days in the last month blah blah blah blah...." The answer form didn't accept my carefully crafted string of four-letter words as an answer ("that's not a number") so I just keysmashed in some absurd number like 4343282348348234. It complained it was too large. I put in -10. It accepted that.

The article wasn't worth it.

I just realized how weird it is to turn 18 on the internet. Where once I received spam mail about store coupons and upgrading my account on DeviantArt, my spam inbox is now filled with mail that asks me if I want to buy cigarettes, certain types of condoms and Viagra.
