An 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck Japan and caused massive tsunamis that wiped out the coastal areas, as well as its neighboring countries. Let's pray for the safety of the affected people.

Wow, that's devastating...

It was today. I was in school when It happend. My geograph teacher told us abou it.

It's sad. I hope it isn't one of a signs of the end of the world yet

Nah, Japan has been hit by earthquakes before, it's got a fault line running through it or very close to it I believe.

Also, I thought it was an 8.9 magnitude one. Either way, it's apparently the largest in Japan's recorded history, and I read about there being several large aftershocks following the quake.

Still, it is indeed a sad event, unfortuately there is virtally nothing any of us can do about it.

Feel free to PM me about almost anything and I'll do my best to answer. :)

I wouldn't call it a sign of the end of the world. Japan is sadly one of the countries most often struck by quakes.

We get large quakes here every few years but never above 7 magnitude.

When you consider the scale is logarithmic, 8.9 is pretty damn powerful.

Everyone is talking about Japan, so I'll add my condolences.

I felt a tiny tinge of guilt after laughing that Godzilla was a trending topic on Twitter, anyway. I should probably be more sensitive. It'll never happen, but regardless.

The glass is never half empty because I drink out of the carton.

I think it's in the Japanese culture to be afraid of disasters. Atom bombs, quakes, and giant lizards.

They certainly have a plenty long list of worries, don't they?

You probably would too if you lived on a fault line.

I live in hurricane country. It's not usually as bad as tornados and earthquakes, unless you're stupid and live in a city that is technically under sea level.

Yeah, I'm talking about you, New Orleans.

I don't really worry about much anyway, though. Natures wrath is pretty inescapable, I've just learned to accept that.

All we can do is just deal with the effects of it.

I'm sorry for the japanese people. I watched some videos of the earthquake and tsunami and the destruction is horrific.

It reminded me of what happened here one year ago. I live in Chile and we had an 8.8 magnitude earthquake on Feb. 27th 2010, at 3:34 am local time. I guess a lot of people forgot about it, since de miners incident took so much media coverage a few months later.

I was asleep, and woke up a few seconds before it began. I don't know why. I remenber being confused as to why I was so wide awake in the middle of the night. Then, it started. At first, I though nothing of it.. we get small and medium quakes al the time, it's no big deal. But it did not stop as usual. And grew stronger and stronger. More and more violent. And loud. There was this huge roar coming from the ground. The house was shaking like crazy, glasses were falling and breaking, alarms sounded everywere, the dark sky was lit by huge flashes of light as the power lines shorted out. And it kept going. I tried to get out of bed, but I just couldn't walk, and had to grab the bookcase next to me for support. And it kept shaking, stronger and stronger.

I was calm, but I knew this was no ordinary quake. This was one of the big ones, fifteen years overdue (I barely remember the one from 1985, just images and noise). I began to imagine the house collapsing on top of me. I worried about my family, my girlfriend... and everybody else. And then, slowly, it stopped.

My home was without power for 4 days, so I was unable to see the images of the destruction (the rest of the world knew more of what had happended that I did). Fortunately, like in Japan, we have very strong seismic constructions standards (in fact, there's a lot of collaboration in this regard between our contries), so the damage was mostly focused in old houses and buildings in the southern regions (new buildings, some 50 floors tall, were not damaged at all). Stills, tens of thousands lost their homes and 500 people died, both in the earthquake and tsunami that came after (it wiped out several coastal town)...

I feel strongly for the people in Japan. I hope they can begin the recovery process without further disasters.

I bring you mortal danger and cookies. Not necessarily in that order.

Natural disasters are especially terrifying because you have no control over them.

And that makes them scary. I've never seen a tornado in real, and I hope I wont. I think such thing it pretty scary. I don't even want to imagine tsunami to see on my own eyes - but in the middle of europe it's quite impossible.

Yeah. I feel lucky for living in Norway. The worst natural disasters we have are blizzards.

I've been within 2 miles of a class 5 tornado... Not that scary. I was only 4 years old, and I thought it looked cool and wanted to sit by our sliding glass porch window to watch it. lol

Don't insult me. I have trained professionals to do that.

Thunderstorms are awesome, I wish they happened here more frequently than once every year or two. It sends shivers down my body hearing the claps echo across the sky.
