Speaking of the whole 21st thing, something else has been bothering me. Not only do people act crazy and go on rampages like Connecticut, but a lot of people might be commiting suicide because of other problems, but decide 'Well, we're all gonna die, anyway' and base it off of that, when they may not have gone through with it before. It just goes to show you that stupidity really can hurt anybody, and not their own.

I don't mean to sound like a cunt but if someone kills themselves just for that, it's not only really selfish, but also really stupid, and I wouldn't feel sorry for them.

Unfortunately, that does sound cunt-ish. Most stupid people can be turned around if you try hard enough; there's no need to hate them.

My point was that no one seems to cares about what might happen in the future because of these baseless, ridiculous assertions that we're all going to die on a certain day or anything like that. Remember when Harold Camping said the world was gonna end? Twice? People sold their houses, belongings, pets, everything. And when it turned out he was wrong (unsurprisingly) what happened next? People were angry and some had nothing left. He wouldn't give their money back, people filed lawsuits, it was a big mess. I just really wish people would get the hint and realize that human beings can't fucking predict the end of the world, so stop believing they can. A lot of these problems could be solved with a little foresight and caution.

I haven't even really cared at all. I've made plans to do stuff with friends on the 21st and I didn't even remember the whole supposed apocalypse day until yesterday, so shows how much anyone cares about it. Really, I think that most people don't believe it or care, it's just that when the one person out of a million kills himself because of it, the media focuses on that because it makes for a better story than the 999,999 people who didn't kill themselves because of 21/12.

It's worse when people short-sightedly choose to end their lives by hurling themselves in front of trains without thinking about the psychological impact on the train driver.

 

As for the end of the world stuff, in the event that something happens, I'm confident the human race will survive in some form or another. Apparently an asteroid came within 140000 miles of Earth a few days ago, apparently prompting calls by some scientists for the creation of plans to deal with the threat of a possible collision from one of these things, as apparently this thing was only detected two days before it passed by, and there's not a thing we could have done about it.

 

The Apophis asteroid is due in another 30 years or so, I believe, and that's estimated to pass even closer.

The Mayan calender, which has predicted every eclipse perfectly since i don't even know when they made it, ends on the 21st.

 

Honestly, if something actually does happened, I'm really gonna care. I'm supposed to get my damn computer, so the end of the world better wait another year or so for me to use this thing.

Yeah, there's an asteroid that apparently has a 1 in 500 chance of hitting the planet in 2040.

 

Also, according to some people I know, the Australian media is absolutely destroying the end of the the world theory. Go Australia.

 

EDIT: Foal, but if you actually did your damn research, you might discover that the still-existing Mayans are reportedly preparing a huge festival/party thing on the 21st to celebrate "The start of a new age" or something. Not the end of the world. Just because my calender ends on New Year's Eve doesn't mean I'll freak out because the world is going to end on New Year's Eve. In fact, I'll probably just...have a party to celebrate the start of a new year. *ding*

I'm not sure how predicting eclipses = predicting the Earth being destroyed. That's like assuming since a guy can fix a toilet, he can fix a helicopter.

That doesn't make a scrap of difference because they Mayans don't use the same calender system as us. The date of December 21st is the comparative date in OUR calender system, and it was calculated to account for leap years. Just ask the Mayans, they're the ones planning a big party for the 21st of this month.
