Anyone here play DOOM?

Recommended Posts

I'm a fan of DOOM, and of course I like playing the DOOM games. The groundbreaking originals and the mediocre modernized DOOM 3 are all fun, and i'm sure there's at least one other person here who agrees with me. Don't know if any of you play DOOM The Roguelike though...

I played the shareware verison of the original Doom on an old Windows 95 PC at home years and years ago when I was little. It was quite fun.

I also own Doom 3 (and its expansion). I enjoyed both, but Doom 3 was better than its expansion.

Feel free to PM me about almost anything and I'll do my best to answer. :)

I love Doom. I practically grew up on it. Regarding Doom 3, surprisingly it was actually awesome for me and I often find myself playing it more than I play the originals. I love it, but in a different way than the classics, it feels more reliant on atmosphere and less enemies. Me and my friends still have Doom deathmatches now and then, though we use ZDoom instead of the original Windows 95 or DOS Doom of course. Agree with LS that Doom 3 was better than the expansion. It felt short and unsatisfying in a way, though I loved the new toys.

I've heard that Doom 3 was kind of like marmite. You either loved it or hated it. I loved it, I really liked the atmosphere it created, and the story was there in the optional form of audio diaries and emails from collected PDAs, and video information discs.

Yup.

Doom 3 was my favorite... Quake 2 beat the others in the Doom series IMO. (Sorry, but Doom 3 was the first time the series was actually kinda scary)

Don't insult me. I have trained professionals to do that.

I disagree with you. When I was a kid and saw those flickering lights in Doom 1 for the first time, I had to change my underwear a lot...

You think I should buy the DOOM games on Steam? I'm thinking I should get the complete collection (Ultimate DOOM, DOOM 2, DOOM 2 Master Levels, Final DOOM, DOOM 3, DOOM 3 Resurrection of Evil) for a cool 35 bucks.

Well, you would be getting the game WADs legally. The only problem for me is that the Steam versions utilize DOSBox instead of better alternatives such as ZDoom or Doomsday. But as I said, it's a legal way of getting the WADs.

I considered pirating the originals since they're so old, but I saw they were on Steam. Now pirating may be free but Steam is more convenient, plus you get to support the developers. I think i'll buy the pack when I get the chance.

I endorse buying stuff legally when you can afford it, especially if you like it.

this

Yup, same. I heavily endorse pirating a copy for backup purposes though. (no legal grounds to prosecute you if you own a copy already)

Same principle with, for instance, Super Nintendo ROM's. If you own the real cartridge, it does count as a backup, no matter where you got it from.

I also DL copies of games I used to have, but have either lost, or gotten destroyed.

I usually pirate for testing to see if a game is worth buying. Like Starcraft 2, didn't know if it'd work on my system, so I pirated to see if it works, it did, so I bought it. And Left4Dead, which I personally didn't like that much, so didn't buy.

Same here. A lot of games these days don't even come as demos so you're basically left with no other option.

I was too young when Doom was popular and modern, I've tried several times to get into it but I'm not liking it very much. Doom 3 and its expansion I find very enjoyable however, to me they feel like classics/familiar territory that I can always come back to when I got no new games in the pipeline. My last, complete runthrough of them both was last summer.

I prefer them to the original Dooms to be honest. I just feel they have more substance and story. In the classic Doom you are just thrown into it, but in Doom 3 it actually happens around you in a more direct way.

Does Doom have any story at all? I remember reading about Carmack saying years and years ago that he didn't believe in stories for video games.

Doom 1 has a backstory, explained in the manual, but it's a very basic one. It can be told like this:

1. UAC experiments with dimensional portals on Photobs and Deimos, two of Mars' moons, travelling between them.

2. Suddenly Deimos is gone.

3. Demons come out of the portals on Phobos and kills everyone or turns them into zombies.

4. You're left alone to fight the legions of hell, but with all the UAC weapon resources to yourself.
