Can I punch a woman if I believe they deserve it?

Hmmm, maybe I'm coming in late on this debate but nevertheless...

Unless it is a combat situation, the woman is armed and/or acts as a part of a crowd or a gang, for a man to hit her is a disgrace.

A man who would hit a woman in an argument, domestic or otherwise, is not fit for a relationship.

If your GF hits you - you shouldn't hit her back either. Let's face it - either you deserved it, in which case, hitting back is unjustified anyway, or not, in which case hitting back will just undermine your own moral stance. Restrain her, reason with her when she calms down or break up with her.

Also most men are physically stronger than women and that makes it doubly repulsive if they resort to physical force for want of a convincing argument. It is worth remembering also that women have lots of delicate baby-making and feeding plumbing inside which can be easily damaged. A kick in the gonads will case a man 20 minutes of hell, a kick in the stomach may leave a woman unable to ever carry a child.

Why should women be any less entitled to physical pain?

What do you mean by "punch"?

"Even if something sounds logical, it doesn't mean it have to be true"

I don't think it's ethical to hit anyone, regardless of gender, without a good reason. I'm definitely against domestic abuse.

While you have a good point about that, I've seen a lot of women that are stronger than most guys I've met. I think it depends on the individual, so I don't think it's right to judge a whole gender based on the myth that females are weaker than men.

I'd only hit a woman if she attacked me first. Self defense shouldn't be gender specific. You wouldn't be acting like a gentleman if she were trying to stab, bludgeon or shoot you. You would either run away or fight back. It's a natural human response.

However, hitting a woman (or anyone, for that matter) who had done nothing to provoke that fight or flight response, is a despicable act.

I don't like writer's block, I prefer to call it writer's parry.

So have I, but I'd say it is still the exception rather than the rule...

That's my point. Violence in general is a bad thing, not just against women. That's like indirectly saying it's okay for guys to be violent to anyone except women, which is not the case and again, it's discriminating.

Here is my opinion:

If a woman is being an absolute bitch, yell at her. Verbally assault her to get her to stop. Or, just walk away.

If she's coming at you with no weapon, restrain her.

If she's coming at you with any sort of weapon, use any force necessary to preserve your own health. In other words, fuck that bitch up if you have to.

I'd say that goes for anyone, not just women. Gee, is it really so hard to get people to understand that the world consists of individuals, not groups?

Well here's the thing. When a woman's coming at you, she's usually just angry and venting. When a man's coming at you, he's trying to rock your socks. While it is prejudiced to treat women as less threatening, and though some are more trained to fight than others, the majority of women are not as stron as the majority of men. This is a stastical fact. Therefore, retaliation towards a man will always be more violent and greater in force than retaliation towards a woman, at least for me. If a guy tries to fight me, that's a challenge to my strength and an attempt to seriously hurt me, so I'll fuck him up. If a woman is coming at me, I can't take it as seriously, quite frankly.

In all likelihood, yes, but this doesn't excuse (physically) unprovoked violence.

I'm the first one to speak in favor of defending yourself, but you've lost me with the "challenge to your strength". I don't expect people to behave rationally when suddenly attacked, but deciding beforehand to deliberately follow an irrational course is simply a very bad idea.

I don't exactly follow. By challenge to my strength, I don't mean I'm testing myself by beating the snot out of him. I mean that I'm defending my self-respect and honor, as it were, as well as my physical well-being. A fight isn't simply a physical battle, it is an intellectual battle determining Alpha from Omega, Man from Boy, Pornstar from Just a man with a large dick... wait, what?

And I'm saying that there is no ethical or legal right for anyone to defend their "honor" or "self-respect" with violence. What you're describing sounds like a bar brawl or general scuffle, and this is about as far from an intellectual battle as you can get. I will protect the bodily health of myself and of others, but my self-respect isn't contingent on disproportionate response. Simply put, I find no "honor" in beating someone up just because they challenged you.

I don't think you're understanding my point, as you are currently using your vocabulary to contrast to my more pragmatic word choice, seemingly to make me appear more barbaric and lacking in class. I am not saying that you beat someone up because they verbally challenge you. My policy is to never deliver the first punch. Always be the second to start and the first to finish. If somebody walks up to me and pushes me just for the hell of it, I will NOT let him step all over me. I am not a doormat. I will fight back with equal force (a shove). If he escalates, I escalate as well. If somebody aggresses towards me, I have every right to stand up for myself. If somebody hits me and I don't respond, I would think poorly of myself for letting another person asserrt their dominance upon me and for not retaliating.

If meant by talking about what's ethical and legal, no, I've spent a lot of time in ethics club and I tend to immediately think of ethics in that context when issues like this come up. Admittedly I tend to use less colloquial language (See, as I write this I realize I'm doing it again :P ), but usually it's when I want to be very precise. Sorry if that comes across as condescending, but I promise it's just how I tend to write when it comes to serious matters.

Okay, now I get you. The way I read it the first time it sounded as though you were saying "That guy pushed me, I'm going to break his nose and gut punch him." But it seems apparent now that you're talking about the same type of reasonable response that I would expect anyone to make. Apologies for the misunderstanding.

Glad I could get the point across. Wording things the right way has never been a strong point, but after missing the nail multiple time, I manage to hit in on the head eventually. I also think our back and forth got this thread slightly off-topic. Back to women...

So, essentially, don't do it if you have to ask.

Women want equal rights, eh? Generally I'm against violence, but if it would be okay to hit a guy, then it would be okay to hit a woman under the same circumstances.
