Top 10 video game soundtracks

Recommended Posts

I am more attuned to scores.

Here are some genuine classics from the late 1990s and above that I had a keen interest in (links provide an example, there are many great tracks):

Unreal Tournament :

Command & Conquer : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ez4gPTOxLCc

Hitman :

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4ossube1m4, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nyykU4GwSDs

Mafia II :

I think good music of video games is pretty much anything that shadows the gameplay and the environment (whether it'll be the darkness of a room, creeping over someone, etc), while also keeping the blood flowing-leading the player in the game, and has a type of complexity to it.

Oh- the above games are in/part of a series, so there is more than just one game.

(es, whatever the plural of series is)

The plural of series is series.

Don't insult me. I have trained professionals to do that.

I was thinking that, but it didn't read right to me when I was writing it.

"That which you do not know, is not a moral charge against you; but that which you refuse to know, is an account of infamy growing in your soul. Make every allowance for errors of knowledge; do not forgive or accept any breach of morality."

I just remembered, some of my favorite instrumental only metal/techno-metal was in Tribes 2. (by Timothy Steven Clarke) Favorite track is either Bioderm, or Lush. Sounds almost exactly like Rammstein in some tracks, and like Darude in others.

Another soundtrack, though not as many of the individual tracks were good, was the music from Star Trek: New Worlds.

Don't insult me. I have trained professionals to do that.

Ah, nice choice. The Danish composer Jesper Kyd did a masterful job with the Hitman series.

Just as well, I'd say, as he did with the Assassin's Creed series.

Personally, I thoroughly enjoyed the Halo Series (Marty O'Donnell), C&C (Frank Klepacki), and the unmentioned but fairly good Alan Wake original soundtrack (Petri Alanko).

I'd also like to add Unreal Tournament to my list.

I can't really order them, but I think these would be my top 10. They all have a variety of music and have multiple tracks that can leave me stunned when I hear it because it's so good:

-Unreal

-Castlevania: Symphony of The Night

-Rama

-Revenant

-SiN

-Silent Hill Series

-Need For Speed Series (1 - 5)

-Descent 1/2

-Donkey Kong Country

-Super Metroid

I haven't played Dreamfall yet however, I'll have to see how that one is.

The only thing that makes Dreamfall hard to play nowadays is the facial expressions. Or the lack of them.

And I agree, the music was very cool, made it feel a lot like a movie.

That and all the painful inconsistencies with The Longest Journey 1 and the horrible clichés.

Yeah definitely, Jesper Kyd's work is a masterpiece. The Composers you mentioned all have produced masterful tracks which not only is enjoyful to the ears but fits wonderfully with the gameplay.

UT99 probably had the soundtrack of the series hehe.

You mean this one? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=omQ-7wZTXvI

The low notes of the Viola really focuses and describes the pain Max has gone throughout the story. The music during the gameplay was very attuned; high & low fast tempos during the gun fights and chase was pretty legit.

I didn't finish TLJ. Played just a few minutes when I was very young, had no idea what I was doing.

I let the clichés go by, because they were movie clichés, not game clichés, and I had never played a game that felt so much like a movie before.

Well, if you have never played the first game then I suppose it might be enjoyable. I just couldn't help but notice the inconsistencies though and they bother me to death and ruin the whole game for me.

I haven't play TLJ yet, and Im not going to. I finished Dreamfall a year ago, and it was ok. The soundtrack is one of my very favourite, because it was one of my first game scores I had.

Beautiful soundtrack. Added to the sense of mystery and the player's emotional state quite a lot.

3. Bully

Great soulful jams mixed with some elctronic dj stuff.

4. Scratches

Music really added to butter-thick atmosphere in this game.
