It feels like that was the game where they gave their everything.

They did.

 

The only thing that anybody complained about in ME1 was the excess of use of the MAKO. (there indeed was a bit of excess, but it shouldn't have been entirely removed for ME2 IMO)

Side quests are 90% of the game if you have the DLCs... It's also got some of the best scenery.

Well that's the point of sidequests. But it's nice of them that the way you resolve them transfers to the next game.

I'm a bit confused here, ME1 only had 2 DLC things, Bring Down the Sky and Pinnacle Station; only the first one used the mako.

Nope, despite the fact that there were only 2 DLCs, it still bumped the side-quest percentage up to 90.
