Birthday thread: Soundtracks

Recommended Posts

I realize that this is probably one of the more known soundtracks around gaming, but I do have to say that the Hotline Miami games have some of the best tracks in indie game history. Bastion would also be a good soundtrack game, but that might just be my personal opinion.

You have to listen to the Undertale OST if you haven't, it makes my heart warm :3 (and fills me DETERMINATION)

Best soundtracks of all time: Bastion and Transistor, both by Darren Korb. Bastion has 3 songs with lyrics, Transistor has 4, but 5 of those are sung by Ashley Barrett, who has a heavenly voice. I'm not quite sure where to get the Bastion one, mine came with the Humble Bundle a few years back, Transistor's can be bought on Steam and includes hummed versions of all the songs (has to do with an in-game mechanic, you pause time to set up your turn's action, the song becomes muffled and the main character hums softly along to it).

Also: Skullgirls soundtrack. Can be bought online, too.

This is a pretty obscure one. Check out the Sega CD version of Sol-Feace. It's an otherwise mediocre space shooter with a badass soundtrack.

It's kind of a hidden gem on the Sega CD and one of my personal favorite games.

Sound track for Jazz Jackrabbit. Always loved the music from this. Back when all I had was a DOS computer I would sometimes load the game up and just have it running in the background so I could listen to the music.

This in particular was my favorite.

The soundtracks to Dust: An Elysian Tail and Endless Space are ones I'm rather fond of.

Endless Space

Dust: An Elysian Tail

Both soundtracks are purchasable at those sites. The Emperor Edition of Endless Space also comes bundled with the soundtrack.

Some housekeeping:

First is the game's name.

Second is/are the best song/songs from the game, if applicable. That doesn't mean the rest aren't worth hearing, but one or two songs stand out as better than the rest (in my mind at least).

Third is the download link.

Alright, here we go:

Alundra (Kline's Theme): http://downloads.khinsider.com/game-soundtracks/album/alundra-original-soundtrack

Have a happy birthday, and I hope you enjoy the music!

Oh hot damn, you have no idea how into this sort of thing I am. First off, the OSTs I can't really recommend highly enough.

- Skullgirls

- Jet Set Radio Future

- The Binding of Isaac

- Payday: The Heist and Payday 2

- DANGANRONPA

- Killing Floor

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJbMaRf51c4 - Watch_Dogs (even though the game was lame, that doesn't mean the music was)

I also recommend the music from Gunpoint and They Bleed Pixels.

There are a shitload more that I'd wanna bring up, but I figure I'll leave the more high-profile games to other people and mention some stuff that others might not know of.

Well the old standard is the Neir Soundtrack which does have vocals on most of the tracks but it is all sung in a made up none language created by taking a bunch of current languages and smashing them together then adding drift from hundreds of years of use.

You can buy the soundtrack from Square Enix and there are a probably legit ways to download it online.

Here is a sample which is also my personal favourite track from the game, the game itself is also great and well worth playing

Also another track that is on the other end of the tone range

As a side note it is well worth reading about the making of the soundtrack.

If you want something that's a little trippy, this is from the game OFF, a French Indie Title that's free to play and uses RPGMaker. It plays akin to Final Fantasy VI and other SNES RPGs, and is fairly short. The soundtrack is... Interesting. But I find Pepper Steak to be one of my favorites, as well as Avatar Beat. Tell me what you think!

Another Indie Title that hit it big this year and is akin to that of the likes of Earthbound, Undertale is one of the freshest concepts I've seen in terms of turn based RPGs where the skill in dodging mixes Top Down Shooters with turn based strategy. It's a great game that's really cheap, and has a wonderful soundtrack. My personal favorite is Megalovania, although CORE has great atmosphere.

That's all I have for now, happy listening! Enjoy your soul sucking-- I mean, soul listening, you devilish necromancer you!

One soundtrack that's not well known is the soundtrack for Layton Brothers, because it's not a well received mobile spinoff of Professor Layton:

Another good soundtrack is the soundtrack for OutRun 2006:

This is a song from the fairly new indie game Read Only Memories. The soundtrack is available on steam, as is the game. All of the music has a synth/electronic sound to it but changes to fit the tone of the in-game location, so there's a good variety. That said, I think all the music on the soundtrack can stand on it's own.

The soundtrack to Starbound is Wonderful! The intro screen is so Calming and gives you a very calm space feel. All the other songs are great too from battle music to exploration tracks. I literally have over 400 hours of the game on record because i used to leave the main menu up as i went to bed.

You can find the whole soundtrack on spotify or purchase it on steam http://store.steampowered.com/app/211820/ or have a listen for yourself

This song is my favorite starbound main menu theme :
